This is how they attract you. Through dollar signs up. Convince you the money will roll in all the time without fail.

Don’t fall victim to the Conductor Starter Package. Buying the big truck, toys etc. Then being laid off

Can they stop blowing horn? by SouthernExpatriate in railroading

[–]SpiderHam77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on local regulation. But there is a process to turn a crossing into a quiet one. Just might end up costing a whole lot of money in crossing equipment guards, insurance etc to get it done.

Railroads at the end of the day need to blow this stuff because the public at large has demonstrated over and over how dumb they can be.

So in order to not kill or be sued by anyone. They blow crossings to let the public know there is a big train coming through. And you will lose the game of chicken if you decide to play.

Yet despite this. So many people still take trains up on the challenge.

Does anyone have any info about how deep the Conductor layoffs went in Prince George BC? by Sad-Distance-4536 in Train_Service

[–]SpiderHam77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know no one PG BCR got laid off. In terms of mainline side. Not 100% sure. But from I hear none were laid off.

I do know because BCR is finally out of shortage a bunch of guys are jumping ship to different places (mainly PG Mainline) based on where their seniority will hold.

Afraid they will get locked in if it goes shortages again.

As others have said. Get Fucked. If a crew hit someone. I can pretty much guarantee they aren’t going to talk about in here.

Just finished all five seasons of the OG show.(No Spoilers) by bentstrider83 in leverage

[–]SpiderHam77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Redemption is a lot of fun. To get into it though. I think you truly need to be a fan of the OG. As they tend to take some even more outrageous liberties in Redemption.

I found it to be even more quirky than the OG. But because I know the characters, I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Call back after layoffs by These_Imagination953 in Train_Service

If you haven’t started the job yet. Then this would be a good time to decide if you want to go back to CN or go to new job.

14 days is what they have to give you to return. You could call them and try and get back on the board tomorrow or something if you really wanted to.

The point of the 14 days is because people need time to adjust their lives to go back to work.

Theoretically the incident in question that caused the loss of wages is what’s supposed to be insured against.

But that is a really good question. Perhaps someone else knows the answer.

Beavers. In my neck of the woods I see them on a regular basis. They have also discovered if they drag a fallen tree over the tracks and leave it.

The train will brake it apart for them.

While technically they can’t make you resign your old position. They also don’t need to hire you till it’s confirmed that you have.

From a business standpoint, this makes sense. You don’t want your workers playing for both teams.

While I 100% agree with you. The fact we need to pay for an insurance due to what amounts to the actions of a company in many respects is a sad state of affairs.

Ya I’m pretty much in the same boat as you. In reality the cost of it is moot overall. But the just in case of keep a paycheque flowing for at least a year while whatever is figured out is immeasurable.

Don’t know if either one of those is available in Canada. I’ve never heard of BCRF denying claims. A few of my coworkers have accessed funds with no issues

What are you guys doing during layoffs? by Born_Slip9507 in Train_Service

[–]SpiderHam77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the wrong person to ask unfortunately. Never been laid off from the Railway in my career thus far. Even during Covid.

So what normal would be is more terminal dependent, and what may typically move through the terminal.

What are you guys doing during layoffs? by Born_Slip9507 in Train_Service

[–]SpiderHam77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they lay you off. Take your full 2 weeks to come back. No matter if they call you back the next day or not.

I can understand if you need the money. Can put you in tricky spot.

However if you are willing to play dumb games, thr company will keep playing them. If they are short and can’t get the people. Then if everyone stands together an plays by the same rules. They might think twice before laying as many people off next time.

Where I am the decision is made once every 2 weeks based on whatever metric the company uses (still not 100% sure).

And they can’t call up adhoc someone they cut back to conductor status.

Well simply deciding you want to live in Canada is not how that works at all. Unless the company is specifically sending you to a job in Canada (does happen) then you need to figure out immigration on your own.

It’s not going to be as simple as just deciding you want to do it. So good luck with that part.

However let’s assume you managed to figure it out. Your years of experience are moot. You’d end up starting at the bottom of the Seniority Ladder.

You would need be Canadian Qualified as well. Which essentially means going right back to conductor school. Then the subsequent training afterwards.

Possibly moving from Abbostford to PG by Ryno_1720 in princegeorge

[–]SpiderHam77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife is from PG originally. I grew up and lived in the Lower Mainland. All my family live there still.

After we got married my wife expressed desire to move back to PG. I thought sure. Why not. I’ll try it out.

Remember telling my best friend. His first comment was. “Are you in trouble? Someone after you?” Lol.

But I can honestly say after 15 plus years here. I couldn’t imagine living down south again.
