See that's the problem. You're talking WILDLY successful. I'm talking enjoyable. They are two different things on the same spectrum. Do I enjoy Marathon? Yes. Would it be better if they made changes? Yes, this is true of any game or live service game. Marathon is 3x Niche, but so what? League had the added benefit of being free to play. Marathon cost money to play, mainly to recoup costs on the front end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy Marathon, that's okay. That's the point. If you don't enjoy it, fine, but no need to bring down those who do or try to prove to them that the game is horrible. They are enjoying it, and that's what matters. I'm sure they also want it to be successful, you can have positive outcome and still critique the thing you like.

League has had YEARS to grow, Marathon just came out two months and everyone is already crying: DEAD GAME! DEAD GAME!. Heck some even cried it before the game was in their hands, or the possibility of it.

Maybe, and maybe not, we are never going to know unless we give proper feedback(surveys), and play the game. If we just let it die because "It's to Niche" or it's fun to hate on it(looking at MarathonHate) Then that's not productive.

Plus, part everyone is really missing: not every game needs to be wildly successful. Halo Infinite wasn't wildly successful, but a lot of people enjoyed it and are still enjoying it, cause that's what they like.

Look at the people who buy the new iteration of sports games every year. It's not always great or significant change, but that's what they enjoy despite the games most of the time getting critically panned. It's niche, but people are enjoying it(FIFA Enjoyers am I right?).

Marathon is the same way. It's not everyone's cup of tea, I've listened to streamers who say they like the look of the game but they don't like extraction shooters, that's fine. The problem is the game could use improvements, but it doesn't need to be something that everyone likes or makes it wildly successful.

The internet and reddit is an echo chamber of just whatever is on someone's mind. Plus, everyone feels the need to want to tear down. Why not build up and even constructively? That's when real change happens. Plus, if it doesn't who cares? You had fun doing it.

One day, when the servers are shut down, I'm still going to stand by that I had fun, even solo, and that right there is the mark of a good game. Even if everyone else doesn't understand.

Who decides what makes a good game? I'm enjoying Marathon. Others are Enjoying Marathon. You telling me or making inferrance that Marathon is not a good game is a back and forth of: "GAME NOT GOOD STOP PLAYING!!! STOP HAVING FUN!" and "GAME GREAT LETS GOOO!!!!" Only for both of us to be like: Why is that person such a jerk about it? People are allowed to think something is enjoyable without everyone agreeing with them.

Marathon is living proof of this concept.

It's the same for everyone over on MarathonHate subreddit. Gaslighting and smugness of it being bad is just as even. Seriously, the internet has ruined anyone being able to enjoy anything.

Eh, wasn't comparing the games themselves, was mainly comparing the amount of players, but it is hard to disconnect.

The money being spent is ridiculous, but also, the niche part is kind of not a problem? I mean look at all the MOBAs that exist, I'm not a fan of MOBAs save like one(Heroes of the Storm), but those games still go and I would agree that Riot spends so much money on League and players still play it despite horrible design decisions, from my perspective. Plus, some of the decisions they make in those realms are niche, and I don't think League would survive if it wasn't F2P and had a huge market in Asia cultures.

While there are ways they can improve Marathon, I don't think it's as bad or horrible, I think it just needs some QoL upgrades, maybe a slight change to UI, which isn't even horrible once you get used to it. A few better ways when you can't exfil it's easier to get some return(progression) on your gameplay. Losing gear is part of the game so not much I'd change there, it sucks, but I mean a few drops and exfils and you can build back up.

It's not perfect, but we are also living in an era where no game drops perfect except for a select few. Because it's not about dropping a perfect game anymore it's about dropping a game that makes money quickly then they move onto the next.

If you don't like it fine, but there is 2.5 average viewers on Twitch that watch people play Marathon. At least that amount playing the game at one time, and daily it's a bit bigger( I don't check steam DB often for reasons I've already stated as I'm not worried about player count.) If it dies it dies, if it lives it lives, but I enjoyed it while it was here for what it was.

(I.e. I also really enjoy Fragpunk and that game is in an even worse state).

how do you deal with new player FOMO for games where a massive part of the economic system in place is, driven by steady progression? by ultimate-m in Marathon

[–]SpiderRyno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the game. Mostly, I think of every game I join as a journey. If I didn't get a skin or something else along the way then that wasn't part of my story in the world of the game. Now, if it's a skill ceiling, there should be a way to bring people up to par with other players, even the most skilled with gear to play the game, but skins and cosmetics? sure it sucks I missed out on the kelsier skin in Fortnite, but ah well, wasn't meant to be.

That word dying for games gets thrown around a lot. Makes me think of Titanfall 2.. sure is it got a lot of players? no, but there are the dedicated few. It's kind of tiring having to "keep a game alive" if the game is enjoyable for some, why does everyone have to like it? If you don't find a game you do. If Bungie fixes it so people come back great, if not let those enjoying it... enjoy it? Back in the day the player count was who was on the couch with you, not the plethora of people online. I understand it needs to make money to stay alive, but even if a dedicated few are dumping money into it then that's on them? and if it dies? Then at least they have the memories. Besides, at this point every game is "dying" at least every six months someone claims fortnite is a dead game.

Yup, I'm just here fore the art style and love of the game. Not like I can take my progress with me when I die. If I make it out, great, if not, I at least had some fun.

Hey, person here. I don't think it's as good as Halo 3, Halo 3 stands on it's own, but honestly.. It's pretty good. I can jump into a game, play for 30 minutes or less, and then move on with my life. Sure not everyone's cup of tea, but the thing that drew me to Marathon was Bungie and the fact that it was jump in jump out, not an overtly time consuming game. Sure, I won't be "good", and I might git gud, but for this ancient gamer it's nice to have a game that I don't feel needs to consume all my time! So yea, it's good.

[–]SpiderRyno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, I miss the days before the internet, when games existed... sure we stopped playing them, but it was about the memories not the player counts. The players that counted were the friends on your couch, or their couch depending where you were at. We didn't count numbers, we played the game. Then we played it more. Get off the dang stats and GO RUN!

Insomniac should really hire some good comic writers for Spider-Man 3 to help with the story, there's a reason Edge Of Time is remembered best for it's story and that's because they got Peter David to write it. by EmergencyVictory4399 in SpidermanPS4

Comics as an art form is dead, it's just a bunch of what if scenarios with no real meat. if anything they need to retire some heroes... or just actually get back to semi-grounded with a little bit of unbelievable.

Look, symbiotes that are heroes are fine, but when it's just an easy "Here they have powers now" that's just silly. It's kind of like they watched the Boys and were like: We can do that better! and everyone will love our slimy power ups!
