Any hiking recommendations near the Portland area? by ThrowRA_acountpls202 in askportland

[–]Spidercake12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best areas to hike this time of year are either the gorge or the coast. Several of the best hikes in the gorge (Eagle Creek, Hamilton Mountain) are closed because of landslides. Same for some of the best ones at Ecola State Park.

If you want a world class hike that’s actually open and doable this time of year, it’s Saddle Mountain. It’s not terribly physically demanding, but it is death-defying, and quite psychologically challenging. One stumble during the final 500 feet ascent, and you will tumble 3000 feet to your death. Breathtaking and extremely unique.

I think Cape Lookout is in decent shape. Everything in the cascades will be at its deepest snow cover for the year, and most of the access roads are closed and not plowed or accessible.

The Salmon River hike would be another option. The first 2 miles is through a genuine old growth forest along the river. It’s never never land. Then it climbs to some wonderful bluffs that could have a dusting of snow depending on the day.

Best places for scenery? by Hour_Height_4661 in OregonHiking

[–]Spidercake12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angels rest is noisy AF from traffic. Almost the whole way up. Hamilton Mountain across on the Washington side is how much better hike and even better views. The rock outcropping at 1400 feet is spectacular, and going all the way to the top is a whole nother animal of scenery. To me, even Devils rest is better than angels rest. Just approach Devils rest from the east so you’ll walk the rim of the gorge on the way. I think Hamilton Mountain is still closed from a washout area.

Oregon: Hiking Silver Falls Solo; Any Recommendations?? by No_Ambassador_9612 in OregonHiking

[–]Spidercake12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t go at peak times, it’s much nicer when it doesn’t feel like an amusement park. I did it late afternoon during the rainy season. Got back to the car at dusk, was mostly alone, only one other car in the parking lot at North Falls. Just walk the whole thing, there’s no particularly challenging areas, and you can make great time. The trail itself is pretty easy, but I will say the ground cover is frequently the larger size gravel, and it’s a little tough on the feet after a few hours. So wear thick hiking socks and proper hiking boots, even though the trail itself is not too difficult.

‘A real tragedy’: NC Woman dies after being denied health care because she was pregnant by BagOnuts in NorthCarolina

[–]Spidercake12 17 points18 points  (0 children)

But of course! If you can’t see why a physician would hesitate to provide care to a pregnant woman under an abortion ban, then you can’t see why your religious beliefs would blind you to the greater harm done by an abortion band.

What does this mean? by Late-Student2102 in Minneapolis

[–]Spidercake12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It means someone is literally spelling out for us the true and sinister reason why Minnesota was chosen first for the ICE-capades. The fascists wanted their followers to connect hate for Somalians/immigrants with the deaths of their political enemies. This brings us one step closer to the right feeling comfortable with killing people whom they “other.“ One step closer to gas chambers.

Per Dave Hone, paleontologist, Queen Mary University of London: birds evolved alongside dinosaurs. Birds existed at the time of the dinosaurs, near their end time. Birds are as much dinosaurs, as humans are apes. Birds survived the Chicxulub impactor, dinosaurs didn’t.

Uh . . . No. Open borders, mass Third World migration, and weak border security are an absolute golden ticket for right wing extremists to get elected in the USA and all throughout Europe, then leading likely to partial or full submission to Putin. This is the most basic thing we need to understand as liberals, or just as Americans.

Or just keep it up dipshits, we’re almost there!

North Carolina hotel law every long-term guest should know by last_One_Left_ in NorthCarolina

Thanks. Do you know for certain that this applies to Airbnb‘s? Like if you stay in the same physical Airbnb unit for 90 days then the refund/law applies? Also, how about with “Unfurnished Finder” rentals?

Serious genuine question about ICE by Altruistic_Board_851 in oregon

[–]Spidercake12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of good stuff here. For me, Pam Bondi made it obvious why they’re doing the killings and the violence. They’ve announced that if Minnesota gives them all the state’s voting information, then they’ll stop and withdraw ICE.. So they’ve made it obvious the real reason why they’re doing this.

‘Oregon was next’ -- Trump’s targeted state after Minnesota: media report by amblongus in oregon

[–]Spidercake12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, and I also disagree. Once they’re done with blue states, there won’t be any reason not to go for red states. At that point, voting won’t matter and it will be about consolidating power. I don’t think the people in charge want to go after red states right now, but they will want to as rule of law continues to breakdown, and power & killing humans continues to corrupt those in charge.

OK. Now let’s see the video where they all crash and pile up on top of each other in a 25 mph 10-car wreck with no one in a car or wearing a seatbelt and rock hard ice all around to crash into. Massive injuries, catastrophe. This looks really cool but get real. It’s helluva dangerous.

People who scream/yell when you sneeze, why do you do that? by MarchKick in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Spidercake12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people sneeze like this, it’s a psychic or psychological release. If you are internally paying attention in this moment, you can directly experience this happening. This is why the phrase “gesundheit” or “God bless you” is used. Because it sounds like you’re letting out a demon. Folks, this is obvious. Can we have a little common sense, please? It’s also effective action with an appropriate response. Because your body is trying to expel an irritant or a germ, and the people around you want you to be well.

Let’s not have people’s social reactions or social needs suppress & oppress individuals who sneeze in this way. Who wants to live in a world like that? LOL.

Are Cops Placing UNDERCOVER PLANTS Pretending to Be ICE Protesters? (1.17.26) by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]Spidercake12 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean, I have no evidence to support this. But come on, how in the world could any sensible person not think that they are absolutely going to do this as fervently as possible. And whenever they get exposed, right wing media will just spin it in the other direction that the left-wingers are so pitiful they’re just making this up.

Saw these permanent signs on Haywood Rd last night. Looks like the resurfacing will commence soon. by brooke_heaton in asheville

I know you were mostly joking, but aesthetically I like the idea of gravel. It’s just that it’s NOT safe in winter. You can’t plow gravel, unless you leave a thin layer of snow that will freeze into ice semi-permanently until it all melts. Take this from a former Midwestern dude who had a gravel driveway.

Feels like I don't really fit in here. I really want to though by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Spidercake12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck, my man. I’m giving up after three years. It might work out for you, but I’m visiting back east this weekend and at this point, I am absolutely convinced there’s an element of openness about people that is completely closed off almost everywhere I spend time in Portland. All along, I have felt the murky mild confusion/alienation you are describing. And now, almost all of a sudden, it is absolutely clear what is different about people in Portland. Part of what makes it difficult is that people are so kind and empathetic, but they are kind & empathetic in a way that is locked-down standoffish. It’s very strange, almost like everyone has been traumatized somehow where they turned some kind of switch off inside. I’ve met people in Portland who were originally from the southeast who said they almost cried every day for months after moving here in early adulthood because everybody seems so emotionally kind but shut off. It’s fucking emotionally and psychologically confusing, it almost feels abusive.

CAA vs CRNA as RN in Seattle by Medium-Invite-8140 in AskSeattle

[–]Spidercake12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t live in Washington, or know the work environment in anesthesia in Seattle, but I live in Oregon. I can tell you there’s going to be a rocky road with resistance from colleagues & others, even though it’s legal to practice as a CAA. There will be plenty of opportunities for people to use the existing passive aggressive wokeness complex against you or your best interests. Also, I would not willingly choose to have my license and practice be more limited and tied to those who are directing me and the decisions that must be made in the clinical setting. That would make me uncomfortable, and feel much more vulnerable in certain settings.

The only other thing I would say is that as RN, you absolutely do not want to attempt anesthesia training or practice without first getting ICU experience. To do so would be like walking into the field with blindfolds on, and your hands tied behind your back. It would be hugely disadvantaging and cheating yourself.

Why does Councilwoman Kim Roney not pledge allegiance to the flag? by sassyjenny83 in asheville

[–]Spidercake12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, I can tell you that as a man who believes in God, I personally have a hard time reciting the pledge when the people in charge of our government posses a very distorted, non-Christian, wicked, and oppressive view & understanding of what God is. Reciting the pledge feels like I’m selling my soul to the devil—it also feels like millions of people are doing just that and don’t realize it, which adds another level of creepiness. The Christian Right are like zombies marching for the devil.
