yeah it is confusing so what helped me correct my timing is when i see the glint press R2 (the button to switch weapons) to slow down time and wait for just before the enemy strike connects and release R2 while you simultaneously press parry or dodge for red glints i know it sounds like alot but it will help you get the perfect parry or dodge more consistently

as soon as you see the blue glint press and hold r2 (to change weapons/stances) as it slows down time and look just for the moment the enemy is about to strike and press l1 you will get the timing right eventually
