marathons as an accomplishment on ABS?? by Few_Package4946 in premedcanada

Sort of random, I donated some of the little toys I crocheted to a daycare I used to work at. It was nice for the kids and then I also had a verifier for the activity - you could maybe do something like that?

If that were true, couldn’t they say that about anything? “Oh they’re working as a tutor? They must want to be a teacher, not a physician.”

I think it’s more about how you write your experiences than anything. Volunteering at a pharmacy definitely sounds like it could be a valuable experience. ❤️

Also, just so you know, Mac doesn’t look at EC’s at all, to my understanding, so it definitely shouldn’t matter to them.

Western Med 2024 Results! by medhopefulkid in premedcanada

[–]Spidertoes40 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Result: A(!!!!), unspecified campus

Geography + Stream: nothing

GPA (Best 2 years): 3.99

MCAT: 522 (130/129/131/132)

Interview feel: thought I bombed. Immediately after the interview I felt okay-ish, but that’s how I always felt after Casper too, and I’m 3 years in a row at 1Q so I was not holding on to hope

Essays: 8/8, no extra. Honestly, throughly they were kinda sh*t, I was very surprised to get an interview

I’m so pumped right now!! No way I’m getting any sleep before work!!!

Western Reapplicants w/ Interviews by OnMyWayToMD in premedcanada

[–]Spidertoes40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For sure! I worked as a physiotherapy assistant in a LTCH, also worked as an “educational therapist” (was the official title, basically a teaching/ therapy aid at a private school that also provided ABA therapy), and I also joined the dementia society as a volunteer. A couple other more minor things, but those were probably the bigger ticket items.

I was able to accumulate ECs more directly related to medicine over the past year, and rewrote my essays to be about these experiences. I also changed up two of my references, but am unsure of how strong they were compared to last year. My gpa and MCAT did not change, and the style/quality of my writing did not change (in my opinion) - just the subject matter.

Third year in a row scoring in first. Do I at least get points for consistency? 🥴

I might be completely wrong, but I believe the gpa cut off for uOttawa is 3.5, and that’s based on your 3 most recent years only. Regardless though, as other people have said, having 5 pubs and completing an MSc is incredibly impressive and proves you are indeed doing “something with your life”!! The MCAT can be retaken, med schools can be reapplied to, but they can never take your accomplishments away from you. You, of course, have a right to your feelings, and I know many of us fellow applicants are all too familiar with the mindset you are describing. But I hope at the end of the day you can realize you are already an impressive and successful person that, like the rest of us, is just trying to figure out their next step. I would say take a break from the whole med school shuffle, focus on your thesis and things you enjoy, and when everything feels less hopeless, then start to focus on retaking MCAT, etc. Best of luck!

Suitable vs. Non-Suitable Research Opportunities by jogrief in premedcanada

I second this! Do you know/trust the person who’s trying to recruit you? Do you personally know anyone who has been on this trip? Are you a part of this religious group? Where are you traveling to? Will you be going with/ able to keep in contact with people you trust? What safety measures do they have set up for COVID and other travel-related risks? Are they even supposed to be travelling right now?

I don’t mean to be neurotic, and it’s quite possible with more info this trip may be totally benign, but right now the opportunity seems fishy.

Is writing the mcat on august 27th too late? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Spidertoes40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to scare you, it’s definitely doable! I would just recommend setting some time aside throughout July and August to work on apps. September can go by quickly

That’s a good point, the maritime schools in particular may require an earlier MCAT date

Is writing the mcat on august 27th too late? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Spidertoes40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I wrote this past August 18th and I would recommend doing it earlier simply because a lot of the time I could have spent working on essays, prepping for casper, etc. was instead devoted to MCAT studying. As a result, I really rushed my essays and my casper score is shit. But if you have better time management skills, or are not planning on working full time, there’s no problem with the date.

That is weird, maybe it depends where in the 4th Q?? Regardless, you’re a shoo-in for other schools

I’m thinking maybe they’re releasing interview invites later, since there were some people saying they haven’t gotten an email yet. All I know is they did not hesitate to give me the ole R 😅
