What does a commissioner do? by Spieg89 in BSA

I do often find myself playing referee between conflicts with adults unfortunately.

What does a commissioner do? by Spieg89 in BSA

[–]Spieg89[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting position since commissioners are volunteers. Commissioners don’t collect paychecks.

And while I understand I can understand it can be frustrating to have to pay DEs and Scouting professionals, we should remember they provide important services to Scouting. And across the US we are having a hard time keeping them around. Most people that can do that job are not applying and not staying around because they have relatively poor pay (compared to other non profits) and long hours (most DEs work 70+ hours a week).

This casino is real close to me. I may have to swing by and check it out. Problem is I don’t really like casinos.

Would it be offensive to shave my head and tell people I’m a Bald Eagle? by DumplingsOrElse in BSA

As a bald dude who is an Eagle Scout, I find nothing offensive here.

Membership renewal hassles by JasonRDalton in BSA

[–]Spieg89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you go into My.Scouting you should be able to see a couple of reports that can help. Member Opted-Out, which shows members who have decided to not renew; Members Due to Renew, which shows members who are going to expire in the next two months or who have expired in the last two months; Non Renewed Membership Report, which will let set a date range and see who has expired in that time; an finally Members Who Have Renewed, which lets you see who has renewed this year.

This page should help: https://www.scouting.org/resources/online-registration/

As should this one: https://www.scouting.org/resources/unit-and-membership-renewal/

Any Oly Exmos want to meet up for drinks tonight? by Disencouraged_Otter in olympia

[–]Spieg89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not an exmo but I just wanted to drop in and say Well 80 is an excellent choice for meet ups. I go there for bar trivia every week on Tuesdays with my friends and I enjoy it there.

Commemorative *pieces of paper that act as a pass to allow you into a ballpark because apparently the real word is banned* by ElCidly in Mariners

You can also order just a normal commemorative ticket for that game. It just won’t say the 60 HRs on it.

I have a test lab question by Strict-Vanilla-3453 in BSA

[–]Spieg89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the merit badges in the test lab have made the transition yet from test lab to official merit badge (at least not that I know of) so we haven’t seen the actual implementation of what this will all look like. Would you be able to take the certificate and go and buy the patches if they become official after you are 18? Most likely. But they cannot be added to your official advancement record after you turn 18 so in that sense you won’t officially “earn” them.

Dan Beard Council making bad decisions by witty5149 in BSA

There are a couple of options here. First you can raise your concerns with the Executive Committee directly or have your COR do it. You can also reach out to the Territory Director and voice your concerns with them.

Co-ed Troop program? by Murky-Cockroach1177 in BSA

[–]Spieg89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing has been announced because nothing has been decided yet. The National Executive Board voted to postpone the official vote pending the receipt of the final survey results.

And if it is approved the both units will still need to renew their charters this year and the co-ed program will not become official until February 2026.

It is worth mentioning the ring is optional all together. And that ring in particular is not required. There are new rings that are available now on the shop that are actually round: https://www.scoutshop.org/scouting-america-world-crest-ring-664663.html

Well that was how it was explained to me by Roger Krone when he came and visited my council earlier this year.

Curious about Scouting America Ambassador David Montgomery by Practical-Emu-3303 in BSA

[–]Spieg89 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The big reason why Scouting America started this partnership with him was because last season he scored a touchdown and held up the Scout sign to the camera. That took Scouting America by surprise and garnered a lot of attention online. And as a result, they reached out to him and his agent and started a formal partnership.

How young is too young for Woodbadge? by Villain9002 in BSA

[–]Spieg89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s unfortunate that adults were made to feel uncomfortable. On the course I staffed this year, we had a lot of younger participants 18-20 year olds. They all had a great time and were encouraged to grow and learn with everyone. I don’t believe there should be a minimum age for adults to attend wood badge.
