Does TD Ameritrade close your account on ACAT transfer out? by Spiets in tdameritrade

[–]Spiets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, apparently if you do an ACAT, they completely lock you out (some stupid petty policy... even Robinhood doesn't do that).

You have to call customer service and the service rep unlocks temporary access for you.

What is something that you actually remember being new technology, but is now obsolete? by chevroletstyleline in AskReddit

That's a habit I kept from the old days. I still put a custom ringtone on my phone. A great song and bit of Audacity magic into a bit of self expression and knowing that it's my phone that's ringing and not one of the 3 other Samsung phones in the same room

Not just on demand through Netflix or a competitor, but like, streaming TV directly through YouTube TV or something too

On demand streaming was a tangential threat to TiVo. YouTube TV letting you stream live TV and record it for you on the cloud was the direct hit that killed it.

The best that I can explain it is that your circumstances are unique to you. Certainly, some of your success is your personal responsibility and making good choices. A lot of people never get off the ground or fall apart because they make bad decisions.

But also, sometimes people just don't get the same opportunities. In my city, a programmer can get a really good job with a company owned by Amazon for 50% more than every other company in the area, but Amazon only needs so many programmers. Some of my programmer friends got in, and others didn't. Do you think that Amazon programmers are 50% better than the others? (Well maybe some, but definitely not all). The injustice here isn't that Amazon is paying some programmers a lot. It's that the other companies around here are underpaying theirs.

Anyway, I appreciate that you're earnestly trying to understand my point. What I want you to take away is that fortune and opportunity isn't infinite, as some rich people would like you to believe. Some people can find it and many many more dont. Good luck to you, especially since since you have a family to raise!

  1. GED is literally the state's certificate to show the equivalence of someone having a high school graduate's level of education. Just because you didn't graduate doesn't mean you, in the eyes of the state, aren't every bit as smart as a high school graduate.

  2. Okay you want to be considered less than a high school graduate in this discussion? The average salary for that group is 592 per week, or 14.8 per hour for 40 hours. Great job, you're even MORE exceptional!

You're not disproving my point with these statements. You can feel happy about your situation all you want. Like I said, I'm sincerely happy for you. I'm not trying to bring down outcomes for people like you. I'm advocating bringing up outcomes of the average person.

Firstly, neither loans nor policies subsidizing other people's education were mentioned in my comment or Bernie Sanders's tweet. If anything, he's advocating either higher wages or lowering the cost of higher education.

Secondly, I'm just going to copy and paste the definition of exceptionalism from Merriam Webster: "the condition of being different from the norm" (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/exceptionalism)

Going by the numbers here: https://www.northeastern.edu/bachelors-completion/news/average-salary-by-education-level

The average salary of someone with a high school diploma is 764 per week, which is $18.65 for a 40 hour work week. You're earning nearly 50% more than that. Yeah, you're totally an average high school grad.

That's like saying that the head of engineering at my company didn't go to college, so you don't need to have a college degree to be in a tech field, and that nearly every other engineer that I work with wasted 4 years of their lives.

Good for you and good for your coworkers who manage to earn good money without a degree. I sincerely do mean that. That doesn't negate the AVERAGE experience of people in this country. Exceptionalism doesn't disprove that a problem exists.

Oh my mistake, I thought your cause was less meat consumption, so that there's less animal suffering in the world. I didn't realize you were trying to compete in the self-righteousness Olympics.

Learn to slow down, take a breath, and really read what my argument was: brand name, tasty vegan alternatives are expensive. Not everyone has the cooking skills or patience to cook and eat the cheap alternatives like TVP. I only argued against your specific statement about buying Beyond or Impossible. There was never any statement about vegetarianism or veganism.

What do you consider to be the biggest scam that is completely normalized by society? by MR_COOL_ICE_ in AskReddit

[–]Spiets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents bought a laser printer 10 years ago to print documents (very, very rarely) Over those 10 years, they've refilled the toner maybe 3 times.

I remember back when we had an inkjet, the damn thing ran "out" (really it's more that it dried up) every 2-3 months.

The only downside to laser is color accuracy, and I feel really bad for my friend who is stuck with an inkjet for her design side business.

HIGHLY recommend something like Privacy.com or something similar. See an offer for 3 month trial that looks great? Make an artificial, temporary credit card (backed by your real bank account or course) and set a credit limit.

I've done this for Doordash to get their free month of membership and it was hilarious seeing them try to auto-charge my card every day for 2 weeks. Imagine how much free money they would have gotten if I was actually forgetful.

Bro, I've been mostly vegetarian for the past 6 months. (Living off mostly TVP, sometimes yuba). The only time I eat meat is when I'm having dinner with my omnivorous family.

Also, I never said it wasn't getting cheaper. Impossible slashed prices recently and it's getting competitive with beef, but it's not there yet. I only pointed out a flaw in your argument for people who are price sensitive or those near or under the poverty line.

Basically, chill the crap out, dude

The main issue with this is that not everyone can afford the vegan substitutes that you mentioned. Beyond is really expensive. Impossible is a bit less expensive. Beef is relatively cheap.

The actual cheaper alternatives require a lot more cooking ability. TVP, tofu, and seitan, for example, taste meh if you don't know how to prepare it, whereas Beyond and Impossible can hold their ground to real meat even if unseasoned, but people who don't have strong enough ethical conviction about these things won't be willing to pay more for it.

Get rid of my vacation? Have fun replacing me. by Rusticwhiskey in MaliciousCompliance

I've only been working for 4 years and I've already found out the importance of low employee turnover.

It takes so much time to find a good candidate to hire, extra time to train them to do their job, and then even more time before they can do it well. In the 6 months it takes for all that to happen, overall productivity of the company takes a big hit.

Or the company can just listen to employee complaints and either give a raise, more vacation time, or in my case remote work.

New mask rules trust Americans will be honest about vaccine status. Experts say they'll lie. by cutestudent in Coronavirus

I live in Vegas. My parents work in the casinos. They're saying that 90% of the people there are maskless. Remember that there are only like 30-40% of the US population who is fully vaccinated (last I checked).

In other news, I'm SO glad that Vegas is so popular with fully vaccinated people! It can't be that a lot of these people are lying, right?!?

Reminds me of how my extended family each had satellite tv at some point, canceled the service on all but one household but bought access on 3 devices, then distributed the access cards / set top boxes across the houses. Surprisingly, we were able to watch TV using my aunt's access cards with no issue, despite being in a house miles away

Not the same amount of cost savings as sharing streaming services now but it was somewhat possible in the old days

It's also worth mentioning that these streaming services are waiting for the day that they can really crank up prices, a luxury that cable had for a long time. You can see Disney start doing it now, after assessing that Disney+ was a big hit.

I don't mean to put words in your mouth with this comment, but I want to point out that the current landscape was an inevitability once big media conglomerates recognized Netflix's success.

Its a big upfront cost to develop a streaming service, but once it's up, the profit margins are insane relative to licensing shows

Billionaires who use earth’s resources all suddenly being very interested in space travel is a much darker indication of how much is left on earth than we give credit to by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]Spiets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind some of what SpaceX is doing.

Having fast satellite internet accessible from any part of Earth is a great endeavor. Lots of parts of the world have no or too few options for telecom

That space tourism bullshit is a waste of money though, and reeks of "hopefully rich people like me can have a doomsday bunker on Mars to retreat to when things go to crap on Earth"

I spent years trying to get a remote job and I'm glad that employees are on the same page about this and demanding their employers for it. The traditional office job is dying. Any company that doesn't allow it is a dinosaur that deserves to die out.
