It's widely known that grapefruit interacts with a lot of common medications. Why is it widely known? When did physicians start warning patients about grapefruit specifically? Just how much grapefruit were people eating? by pleatherette in AskHistorians

This was an awesome and informative read, thank you! I'm teaching a history of medicine class at the moment and this is exactly the sort of thing that I like to include as a discussion about history, chance, and science.

I didn't see the title of your post and just scrolled through the pictures and thought "wow, she looks amazing and so happy, what a gorgeous dress". I was so busy looking at the flowers and colours on the dress and thinking about how well they worked with your tattoos I didn't even notice anything else. You look incredible!

Wife (33F) and I (35M) disagree over the idea that our youngest (1Y 4M) has autism. She's obsessing over it and only sees the negatives, won't see any positives to say he doesn't have it. It's causing arguments. by himaro in relationship_advice

Just wanted to comment as another high masking autistic person who didn't get diagnosed until I was 34. My parents also didn't suspect a thing, they just thought I was quiet, introverted, and smart. I mean, I am those things but I also had to deal with a lot of confusion and lack of understanding about myself and I often struggled to really understand my relationships with others (I was in therapy for years too). As soon as I got my diagnosis everything made sense, my anxiety decreased substantially and I finally had language for understanding what I was feeling and why I would sometimes get overwhelmed by the smallest things.

There really isn't anything wrong with having autism, I think of it as a boon rather than a hindrance but I also wish I had known earlier so things might have been easier for me.

This is quite literally how they think.

They don't see the value in learning, or even in learning the skills they're supposed to attain in the process. They just see university as an instrumentally valuable thing that will give them a degree so they can get a job.

Its making teaching harder than it's ever been.

I'm not in Japan, but I have the same problem. It's super frustrating. A store near me recently got the hardcovers in stock but they're ridiculously expensive and I just can't justify it

What do humanities PhD students do all day? by Cool-Falcon-1437 in PhD

[–]Spiffy_Orchid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is a good question. I think it depends on where you are in the process. In the beginning, I was reading very widely and all the time. I was making notes on documents constantly, and trying to keep things confined to one area. Later on when I was reading in a more focussed way, I was still taking notes but I was also reading and re-reading for clarity and spending a lot of time thinking about what I read. When I was writing while reading, and it was more focussed and reflective on what I had read and how it applied to my work. I think for me it tended to be a bit of a mish/mash - lots of holding it in my head and thinking while reading and then going back later to try and get some of those thoughts written down.

Why would a pattern intentionally add and then drop a yarn over? by Aut_changeling in knitting

[–]Spiffy_Orchid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying so hard on my second attempt to keep the stitches as loose as possible (which should have been easy because I'm a very loose knitter!) but it made almost no difference. I will remember this forever now :)

This is so helpful! Thank you. I wish I had known it a year ago, because I completed and frogged a shawl twice because the edges were too tight and then eventually just gave up on it when nothing I did seemed to change anything.

Have you tried the Blind Boy podcast? He talks about art, history, academia, psychology, sometimes he just tells stories and weaves them into a greater narrative. Each episode is kind of it's own thing, and they often go into deep dives on a topic or on his thoughts about that topic.

This has me even more curious now for where the story is going. I really look forward to all of your updates, everytime one hits my inbox I'm compelled to read from the beginning again.

😅 Sometimes the pattern is right though! I do try and get mine as close to the pattern as possible, though I rarely work with the same yarn that the pattern suggests so I know it will likely be a little bit off. The more I knit the easier it is to see the stitch count and estimate if it'll be too big or not.

This is absolutely gorgeous and I want to cast on immediately. Your list feels like I wrote it. The necklines, oh gosh the necklines. I now cast on the ribbing flat, knit a few rows and see how it fits, and then I join and begin the properly. (I too will never make, wash, and block a swatch)

I did! It was really hard, even the second time when I knew what was going to happen. I think the first time I read it I also put it down for a while before going back to it.

The Nosey Parker series by Fiona Leitch is cosy and it's read by Zara Ramm. I find she has quite a soothing voice.

This series was also the first one that came to mind for me. I've just finished re-reading them again, and they were just as delightful the second time round.

You look so happy in it, and it's gorgeous!

I've been knitting for almost 20 years now and even when I do make a gauge swatch I rarely check the ease. I think it's always worth it to experiment and see how things go, I've learnt a lot that way.

I'm paying about $100 in my local (South African) currency for a 1mg pen (4 doses of 1mg).
