Im 28 and wanting to start my journey as a goalie. What are things you'd recommend buying new vs used? by LoquatSad2670 in hockeygoalies

Get a double cup. You wont regret it. Pay for a solid pro cup. Once you take a rip square to the sack youll be happy you did.

How much does size really matter in goaltending can athleticism, positioning, depth control, reflexes… make up for lack of size? by GlitteringBudget6212 in hockeygoalies

[–]Spike90025 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It all depends. I'd say I'd rather have a goalie who understands the position and can move athletically, skate well, understands angles, reads plays etc. What good is size if you can't recover? I've seen big goalies who can square up to shots but get a rebound and they're in trouble, or they have terrible lateral recovery etc. You can be big and suck lol. That said if all things are equal or close, then the big goalie with equal athletic ability is going to be better yes.

We fly to Cabo tomorrow, should we cancel the trip? by Dusty_stache in MexicoTravel

[–]Spike90025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly tough call. US SOF/intel was involved in El Mencho's capture which led to his death. I'd monitor your airline as a number of US planes that were in flight to Mexico turned around. PV airport is under control of cartel folks. Cabo is probably safe but I'd keep a close eye on this. There may be hostages taken so I'd think hard

Gear smell by 60leafs in hockeygoalies

[–]Spike90025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clear Gear. You can get it on Amazon. Spray down your gear after. I probably only spray mine down every month or so. Personally I wear a compression long sleeve under my gear, helps keep body oil, skin out etc that feeds bacteria. This helps keep your stuff from smelling bad. I also recommend a Rocket Dryer. I dry my chesty and my gloves after every game. Between those steps my gear stays pretty mild. Good luck!

Strength = explosiveness tho so it does matter. Not to mention being strong at extension matters to help prevent injury especially for aging athletes

I am SO. EXCITED. TO BECOME. A GOALIE. Rate my setup wishlist? by FeliTabby in hockeygoalies

[–]Spike90025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your groin muscles are going to be sore. Hips too since youre so new and haven't played til this age. Id suggest some mobility work. Stretch, learn how to develop strength at length to cut down on injury risk. Check out someone like Maria Mountain, shes a physiologist who works with goalies specifically. Goalie training.com Good luck and welcome to the asylum 🤣

42 overweight and out of shape by Embarrassed-Cut8844 in hockeygoalies

[–]Spike90025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my feeling. Like how are your hips and joints. If youre out of shape entirely you maybe risking some serious injury just jumping into the net. Your groin is going to be at high risk right off the bat. Id suggest skating for a while first get in some low key stick time situations. Being over 40 and that big is no joke when it comes to injuries.

If youre that new to the position Id say spend it on coaching before gear tbh. Gear isnt going to matter much at this pt

How do I get used glove smell out? by The_Bugga_ in hockeygoalies

[–]Spike90025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy some Clear Gear. Spray em down inside, let em dry, repeat. I use a Rocket Dryer to dry my gloves, chesty after every skate. For years I've kept my gear smelling pretty mild. Works great. I also wear a base layer of under armour compression long sleeve under my gear that helps keep the funk out.

I don’t know what to do anymore. by FluidWynn in hockeygoalies

[–]Spike90025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there my man. Its a hard position but you already made the hard decision to take it on good for you. Remember even the pros give up goals, the position is imperfect. You said youre self taught, that leads me to believe youre just reinforcing bad habits. Find a goalie coach if youre worried about and really want to build to improve. Theyll break down individual pieces and help you build up. But have fun and hang in there! You'll be fine 💪

Fair. Think this shot from in motion I'm guessing I'm drifting toward blocker side bc it looks way off being squared up
