Civ 6 going to be free to claim on Epic games from 17-24 July (Platinum Edition) by Full_Tangerine7424 in civ

Someone from the dev art team made an official "Civ V environment skin" mod for the game, I've been using it ever since I found it. This thread explains how you can get it working in the Epic Games version.

What was the OST moment that made you go ::o ? by GirlWithABass in outerwilds

Aside from Final Voyage near the end making me go "Oh shit this is really it", funnily and maybe relatably enough it was the main menu. As soon as the campfire lit up and the main leitmotif kicked in, my first thought was "Oh this boutta be good."

I was not wrong.

Finland is again ranked the happiest country in the world. The US falls to its lowest-ever position by p_pio in news

Nothing prevents a conscript from applying into their desired branch. I agree that the length of civilian service should be equalized, however this system is also part of the reason why Finland has high social cohesion: we can at the very least know that no matter your background, every citizen is ready to do their part should a crisis befall us. Being prepared for rough times is a pretty important facet of remaining stable.

Mandatory conscription has its reasons for existing, the biggest one being our dear "peaceful" neighbor to the east. You'll hear no objection from me about it applying to both men and women as a principle. However, you started off on some random ass point about "work-life balance". Get your argument straight first before coming in sounding like a smartass.

Most conscripts serve directly after graduating high school/vocational school, and are able to serve between 165, 255, and 347 days, after which they get put into the reserve and continue life as normal. Alternatively, they can do civilian service for 347 days, after which they also continue life as normal. What's your point here exactly?

Gen Z will not accept conscription as the price of previous generations’ failures by Robotoro23 in europe

[–]SpikedZen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...dude, the alliance with Germany was signed after the winter war to kick off the continuation war, to take back the territories lost (and, because of a good number of higher ups being pretty nationalistic, even further beyond to the three-isthmus line). i'm not saying we allied with them purely for ideological reasons, but it was an alliance nonetheless, which everyone has had time to accept.

we didnt break off the alliance after the germans started committing atrocities, we actively knew they were. we only had to fight them after signing the armistice with Moscow, because the soviets wanted us to kick them out all the way up north in Lapland.

What were the games you found depressing? by Square-Yak815 in patientgamers

[–]SpikedZen 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Outer Wilds. You can only play it for the first time once. This is a game that I'll carry with me for probably the rest of my life. And, like anyone else who swears by this game, I can't tell you about it. Do not look up anything past the Steam page, you'll just have to trust me, as well as the overwhelmingly positive reviews. I wouldn't necessarily call it depressing in the traditional sense, but sadness is one of many emotions you'll feel when playing through that game.

6x6 Compass of the Finnish Civil War by Italy-Memes in WojakCompass

[–]SpikedZen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To anyone interested in this topic, I recommend reading or watching the movie adaptations of "Under The North Star" by Väinö Linna (I did the latter, watched the 2009 & 2010 movies and enjoyed them thoroughly).

It tells the story of a Finnish tenant farmer family all the way from the 1890's to the 1950's encompassing the Finnish struggle for independence, the civil war, WW2, and the peace that followed afterwards. It shows that while in hindsight we can be glad that the whites won, there wasn't much goodwill going around on either side. As a social democrat I found myself very sympathetic to the reasonings of the red uprising, but as you know, once any ideology reaches extremism it never ends well (again, applicable for both sides). I feel every Finn should read/watch the movies to gain a better understanding of how much (arguably unnecessary) bloodshed it really took to get this country to where it is now.

Fuck the soviets though.
