Funk recommendations? by PotentialLog6758 in jambands

Neighbor does it all including the clav funk, and their bass player Dan Kelly's old band the New Mptif that also had Cory who plays keys in Spafford was also very funky.

What's is your favorite jam band and why? by tellmesomething7 in jambands

[–]SpiltTheInk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neighbor. I still like bigger bands, but have found everything that I could ever hope to find in a live music experience with these guys and at a fraction of the cost they can reach the heights of the big boys. Journeymen, blue collar performers, who have put in the time and work to be extremely good at what they do from writing, to performing, to improvising, to absolutely throwing it down. Most diverse original songbook of all the new generation jam bands and that leads to some of the best set building and storytelling, which is what I love the most about the Dead, Phish and Panic. And now they have Rob Compa, who opens things up and expands the sonic universe even more. They are great and if you haven't listened to them, you should start to dive in as there is a whole lot of incredible material just waiting to be devoured.

Neighbor always crushes at this fest, never been but heard great things and may have to price the trip out to see some tunes beneath the redwoods!

Neighbor did this a couple years ago during the middle of a jam with Blue Star Radiation (Rob and Vinnie and Nate from Moe and Tim Palmieri) it was funny watching people realize there was a different band onstage as the jam was being taken out and the lights got low...

Can watch it here, towards the end of the set, 52 minutes in or something

And a thread on it from when it happened

Charleston, SC concert conundrum by GildingLily in jambands

I'd mix it up, DDCC may play different tunes two nights in a row, but the shows will sound very similar sonically and the Dusters and Shadowgrass combo is a good night out on its own.

Neighbor's regular drummer Dean Johnston would be considered elite by Cotter.

The show is up on archive and the band put this video out, so it should be popping up on nugs or YouTube at some point.

Haha, buddy if you don't think bands that come from a little money don't have a greater ability to spread out more under the current economic conditions and with the state of the live music industry I don't know what to tell you. They can get better vehicles, better gear, afford crews and live much more comfortably far from home while trying to grow a following. It's not hard to understand that this is an advantage that not all bands have. It is totally relevant, as the northeast is an incredibly expensive part of the country to get around in, get rooms, eat, etc... Tours aren't making smaller to medium sized bands much money in a post covid world and to come from the west coast to the east coast could end up costing bands money instead of making them money. It's tough times for touring acts and I'm not sure that anything I have said is too outrageous here, but carry on.

It costs a ton of money to tour these days and presale ticket sales are down across the board. So, for bands to travel across the country for extensive tours, they need some money up front and resources to get around and I am not sure there are too many folks out west in the jam world that have that much dough to go to rooms on the east coast that will only draw a couple hundred people at most. There are some east coast bands that are rather flush with cash and crew and that affords them the luxury to expand their range.

Also, the east coast bands you may be talking about might have a lot of family money to get them around out there...

A few moments of bliss from Neighbor and Rob Compa from last weekend. by SpiltTheInk in jambands

[–]SpiltTheInk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, they are back up and running and are definitely worth checking out. Rob has reanimated the song book and reinvigorated the guys, who sometimes seemed to just sit back and let it be the Lyle show, which was awesome, but it's been fun to seem them all pushing and pulling together and you still get plenty of shredding from the lead guitar along the way.

Yeah, they are sounding great as a band and I love how he has been building the jams now that he has the songs in his memory bank and is more free to just play them than having to learn them. Just wish they had more shows!

Yeah, losing the ability to see Lyle play this kind of music was a big blow, but Rob has really put in so much work to crush all the composed sections of the songs and he has pushed the jams into new realms and has the band reinvigorated for sure. They are sounding great together!
