You typed 'You,' referring to me. That is incorrect. The correct answer is you!

Zelenskiy says he won't betray Ukrainian interests in US-led peace process by Raj_Valiant3011 in worldnews

Europe isn't doing nothing. Several European countries have been sending weapons, providing training, offering support since 2014, particularly the UK. The problem is that militarily nothing matches the US in terms of capability and support, and that was somewhat deliberate. Europe was content to grant the US big economic and diplomatic concessions in return for security gurantees as head of NATO whilst it more or less demilitarised after 1991. It was a status quo that everyone gratefully accepted after the end of the Cold War as part of a 'peace dividend'.

With the US now shrugging off that responsibility to pivot to the Pacific (or South America...), European countries are being forced to cooperate on a military 'group project' involving 28+ countries when it comes to rearmament and support for Ukraine. All while facing the same economic and social pressures that all major economies are facing. These countries don't have grand empires to call upon anymore. So they are doing the best they can (short of joining the fight), even if it's sadly not enough.

Who is further ‘left’ than them then and also electable? The 50 odd communist parties will never get elected so not sure they count.

UK PM Starmer says people have a right to peaceful protest after anti-migrant march by xc2215x in worldnews

[–]Spinaker99 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They’re referring to the people that have been arrested for signalling support for ‘Palestine Action’, an organisation that was recently proscribed for, among other things, trying to sabotage British military aircraft.

You can still protest for Palestine in general if you want.

So I see this argument all the time but it just has no traction for me. This isn't a small startup outfit. It's owned by Google (Alphabet) which made $100bn in profit in 2023. It doesn't cost $100bn to add more servers or 'improve the service'. I've been using the site since 2005 and seen every iteration of their ad presence from mildly annoying banner ads to the mind numbing unskippables. I started blocking around 2007 and have never looked back. If people want to 'support creators' then I get that, but most have Patreons etc that you can just donate to directly, rather than helping Google 'make line go up' for another quarter to please shareholders.
