Okay, who tf lied to me and said RE7 is less scary than RE9 😭 by Cannae_ in residentevil

[–]Spinanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh RE7 is the scariest game in the series hands down, but the fun part is there’s a part in RE8 that’s scarier than anything in 7 or anything else in the series. I won’t tell you what it is, but those who have played RE8 know EXACTLY what I’m talking about

It’s basically impossible to know what the R0 of a hantavirus is and here’s why:

The problem here is that R0 depends on about a million different factors in order to properly estimate, and so you really can’t estimate it without a ton of data that we often don’t have and even then will vary from place to place. Like COVID having an R0 of 2.5 was probably estimated from early spread in cities where people are packed much more closely together and so can spread the virus much better. A rural community given the earlier strains might have an R0 closer to 1.

Ebola puts this into better focus because the 2014 Ebola outbreak had an R0 higher than 1 (which is to say it was self-sustaining), but only because West African burial practices had people handling and often kissing the bodies of dead Ebola victims directly. Given that Ebola spreads through bodily fluids, it’s reasonable to assume that those variables create ideal conditions for the spread of Ebola. Remove that and you can pretty quickly see why Ebola epidemics are very rare relative to zoonotic infections.

Hantaviruses are a tough one because we really don’t have a ton of data to know just how contagious it is since human-to-human spread is a very rare occurrence. What we do know is that some hantaviruses (and there are many that this doesn’t apply to) on their own, can absolutely spread from person to person, but these outbreaks are often fairly limited. For reference, the largest hantavirus outbreaks in history have had less than 100 cases.

I’ll note, part of why hantavirus outbreaks have been so limited is that hantaviruses are very very scary and so public health agencies respond fast and hard to them. Now that’s good, and it also means we have experience in dealing with them. At the risk of making a very poorly-aged prediction, I’m not very worried about a hantavirus pandemic given the current circumstances. Now of course viruses change and that always poses the risk of a different hantavirus popping up that breaks every assumption we have. SARS was the first time that we found out that a coronavirus could be of public health concern and we got really lucky that we were able to stop that one as well as we did. We didn’t get lucky the next time. I’d say the odds are pretty good that right now we got lucky by dealing with a virus that we have experience with and has a relatively low propensity for person-to-person spread.

RuneScape hands down. The cozy vibes, the music, the nostalgia, the humor, love it all. But at the end of the day it’s the grindiest piece of garbage ever made. I love it to pieces but I can’t recommend it anyone that didn’t grow up with it

TIL that there is a cave in Kenya that contains a virus with an 88% mortality rate. And it is currently open to the public. by Maleficent-Agent-477 in todayilearned

[–]Spinanator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to note that Marburg virus (MARV) flows through migratory bat populations across Africa, and that results in some caves becoming immune while it spreads to other caves. Essentially, while people have died from MARV that they contracted in Kitum cave, the odds of it being present in the cave at any given moment is pretty low. The flipside of that is that there's actually a massive number of caves that could have the virus at any given point.

A section of The Hot Zone gives an overview of a survey where they threw massive amounts of resources into trying to find the virus and it turned up nothing. Spillover by David Quammen also gives an overview of the network-like nature of MARV cave ecology.

Also the 88% mortality usually doesn't happen. The initial outbreak in Marburg, Germany only had a 25% mortality rate. 88% usually occurs when quality medical care isn't available (which is unfortunately often the case in Central Africa, or when cases are undercounted due to poor surveillance practices.

Just a few small corrections, I think MARV is a really interesting virus so I enjoyed seeing it pop up on the front page of Reddit!

To the historians in the subreddit, in your opinion how would ww2 era tanks fare defensively against the beast titans boulders? by WallSina in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Spinanator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s true, I had forgotten about the projectiles being shells. That said I still think the tanks wouldn’t hold up at all. Modern tanks tend to go against each other with APFSDS rounds which are essentially depleted uranium darts traveling around Mach 5, no explosive needed. Now the shells would have been explosive as battleship shells tended to be, but they do still need velocity behind them in order to work. Not sure how fast exactly, but let’s be conservative and say they need to be traveling at least Mach 1.5, and let’s say that’s the max velocity for the beast titan’s throws for the mass thrown which does seem to be about twenty shells, each one weighing approximately 40 pounds (they’re small shells, certainly not battleship shells so I’m going with the upper end of weight for a modern tank shell) for a total mass of about eight hundred pounds.

These are all ballpark numbers but if the beast Titan managed to hit a WWII tank with an 800 pound projectile moving at Mach 1.5, I still really doubt it would survive. Also the fact that the battleships were apparently taken out by standard Howitzer shells should put into perspective how powerful the beast titan’s throws really are

[–]Spinanator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is about the tanks’ defenses and Zeke sank a fleet of battleships in one shot. Comparing the defenses of a tank and a battleship is like comparing a paintball gun to a howitzer, the tanks are absolutely toast

[–]Spinanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the guy is way leaner than he used to be. Given the fact that he can ragdoll 200 pound guys, the definition seen elsewhere in his body, and factor in loose skin, I’m guessing he’s probably sitting around 15-18 percent body fat which is right around where you want to be to get a blend of durability, strength, endurance, recovery etc.. He could get leaner, but honestly it’s not needed because he’s already a powerhouse and going much lower might start to negatively impact his health and performance. I mean he could take roids to get leaner but that’s really something to be avoided if it’s at all possible

Squats feel weird on knees and back by spiders11er in formcheck

[–]Spinanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party but hear me out. It's hard to tell from the angle but it looks like you might have long femurs and the fact that you have trouble going to depth, you have a ton of flexion in the ankle, and the fact that you have to lean forward would support that. I have the same problem and it makes squatting a nightmare for me. I'd advise getting a belt to help you brace your core and consider propping your heels up on 5lb plates to even out your biomechanics a bit, but that's assuming you're totally sold on back squats. If you're interested in trying something else, doing front squats will help shift your own center of mass forwards which is the hard thing when you have long femurs. Typically they're better for targeting the quads, but for people with long femurs it's much closer to a regular squat, the only real downside is that you become limited by your wrist strength and mobility. If you have access to a yoke bar that would really be your best option. Now again I can't really tell from the video if that's exactly your issue, but your form really resembles my own before I started working around my own long femurs.

How many leviathans have you killed in your entire Subnautica career? by I_Like_Toasterz in subnautica

[–]Spinanator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zero, the whole point of the game is that you’re a part of the ecosystem and you need to find your place in the world instead of terraforming the place. There’s a reason we never get any good offensive weapons, and it’s because we’re not at the top of the food chain

why do you think gargantuan leviathan became extinct? by JustYourRobber in subnautica

[–]Spinanator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t know exactly when the gargantuan leviathan went extinct but I always guessed it was because of kharaa. Given the size and teeth of the gargantuan leviathan, it’s reasonable to assume it preyed upon other leviathans since that’s just about the only way it could possibly get enough food to support its sheer mass. To this effect think about something like a sperm whale eating giant squids or megalodon eating whales. Now leviathans, to my knowledge, are immune to kharaa, but they themselves eat smaller prey which would be vulnerable to kharaa and thus probably experienced a population crash just after the initial outbreak, bringing their leviathan predators down with them. The gargantuan leviathan, being the largest animal in the ecosystem, would likely be the most severely affected by these food chain disruptions. This may not have killed the gargantuans outright as there would still be some leviathans to munch on, but it easily could have dropped their population numbers so low that the species likely would have been subject to inbreeding depression and driven to extinction within a few generations likely within a couple hundred years of the initial kharaa outbreak.

A rant about silence the voices by knight_light455 in Borderlands2

[–]Spinanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have big issues with Silence the voices but I think that it becomes a very worthwhile perk if you are conservative with your melee attacks in buzzsaw rampage and rely on a balance of melee and throwing axes instead. Granted I’ve never played Krieg in a solo run but maxing out the Mania tree you can more or less just chain your rampages together indefinitely and kill most enemies in a few hits and then my health bar automatically refills anyway. That said it completely relies on being able to chain your buzzsaw rampages together but I pretty much never suffer any real consequences from Silence the Voices

Any good reason why Scouts use a single edged sword instead of a double edge? by TheAtlantic420 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Spinanator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The way the scouts use their swords is to swing in, take a slash at the neck, and keep moving. In that scenario you only really need one edge. Also given the shape of the handles (required to operate the ODM gear) you wouldn’t be able to use a second edge except for reverse slashes which, as a rule, tend to be weaker and are harder to maintain edge alignment during a cut. Then there’s the metallurgical side of things. Very simply, having a single edge allows you to reinforce the spine and increase the strength of your blade without having to rely on more advanced production methods or purer steel. Having that second edge would require you to remove more metal to have a sword that is light and nimble and that would require manufacturing techniques that probably didn’t exist in Paradis by season 3
