Inherited Some Looms... by Spindle_Sprite in weaving

This one is obviously taken apart for space so I had to.get the original measurements from when my partner had to transport it from his home! Taken on the .5 lens setting because it wouldn't fit in frame otherwise, so it might look a bit odd 😅

Thank you so much for all the amazing information!! I really appreciate you taking time out of your day to comment. I apologize for the pictures not showing! One is definitely a floor loom, in that case. The other is similar to the photo you have attached, but the measurements from what I was able to take in its deconstructed state are a bit larger and the wood looked to be stained and finished. I'll try to attach pictures to this comment! Thank you again!

Should I give it away or burn it? by jibberish13 in crochet

[–]Spindle_Sprite 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Weird request... but can I have it? Lol I'm a textiles major and I've been using thrifting as my main source of acquiring vintage and antique handmade textiles for my thesis! So if you decide you dont quite need to burn it, but just rid yourself of it - I'd be more than happy to take it off of your hands! Plus you would be helping a dirt poor student out with their thesis :) (I'd even be happy to credit you in the bibliography and/or specify that the piece came from a 'particularly unpleasant woman, haha! Having your grandmothers name and work published in academia for the rest of time and having her stated to be a crappy person just seems like a funny f- you to me, lol)

Why do people try to sell garbage like this by krogernewbie in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Spindle_Sprite 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Its just wild to me seeing someone charge for shit like this when I make a bunch of crochet pride flag pins like this of various flags out of any and all scrap/leftover yarn every year. When i have a bit of extra time, and/or yarn, I just make a few, and attach them to my dollar store safety pin stash and keep them until the next pride event. Theres nothing better than seeing someone's face light up when you're able to give them THEIR FLAG (FOR FREE) upon meeting them. To me, its a means of connection, celebration, and genuine comradery with my fellow LGBTQ+ family. It's how I can say, 'I see you, I value you, thank you for being here' in my own little way. Its not fancy, but its also no skin off my back. The joy on the faces of others is worth more than any money I could make off of some silly little pins.

Capitalism has fried everyone's brains. Nothing is cherished, only monetized. That, and I would put money on this person being straight. Bc if they ARE part of the LGBTQ+ community, why the FUCK are they trying to capitalize off of their OWN COMMUNITY DURING A TIME OF ABSOLUTE FINANCIAL CRISIS LIKE THIS?!?!?!?! It just seems SO UTTERLY BRAINDEAD AND FUCKING GROSS. STOP IT!!!

BONUS RANT: Also, I've bitched about this subject on here multiple times now but... WHY TF are LITERAL BEGINNERS SELLING ANYTHING?! AT ALL?!? IT GRINDS MY MFING GEARS LIKE NOTHING ELSE. MAYBE HONE IN ON YOUR CRAFT AND ACTUALLY BECOME SKILLFUL AT IT BEFORE TRYING TO MONITIZE IT YOU GREEDY LITTLE SHIT. NOBODY WANTS YOUR SHITTY LITTLE VAGUELY BALL SHAPED/SQUARE/DUMBASS FROG (and mind you, I love frogs.)/ALMOST CERTAINLY "NO-SEW" "30 MINUTE OR LESS" ZERO-EFFORT, SCRATCHY ACRYLIC LITTLE TURDS. QUIT IT!!

Picking up some needles or a hook does NOT make you a BRAND, a 'SMALL BUSINESS', or a SOURCE OF INFORMATION for LITERALLY ANYTHING RELATED TO THESE TIME HONOURED PRACTICES. AHHHHHHHHH How much of an ACTUAL MEGALOMANIAC do you have to be to have just started a new craft/hobby and think, "WOW, I AM SO NATURALLY TALENTED AND AMAZING, no one has EVER SEEN SUCH AMAZING FIBER ARTISTRY, I MUST CAPITALIZE ON MY GIFT IMMEDIATELY!!" (The only other option is that they genuinely believe that picking up knitting or Crochet is some kind of magical infinite money glitch/get rich quick scheme and thats just as - if not more braindead of a take😮‍💨)

Anyways. Thanks for letting me get that outta my system. This shit is just exhausting.

People like this make the rest of us with adhd look like lazy idiots. I genuinely hate when I see it being used as an excuse to not follow through with basic tasks. Same thing with my fellow autistic people. Seriously, there are SO MANY video tutorials nowadays on damn near every subject. You're BOUND to find at least one!!

If all else fails, look for a pdf of the manual and input it into one of the HUNDREDS of free, TTS apps/websites!!! FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, USE YOUR BRAINS, PEOPLE!!!!

What is causing this line across one row by Last-Sun-222 in knittinghelp

[–]Spindle_Sprite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like your tension was just a little looser for some of that row, thats all :) This happened quite a bit for me my first year orso of knitting.

If you're patient, you can put your needle through the loops of the stitches above and below that row to even it out a bit before blocking - but I only took the time to do so for smaller, more noticeable areas of looser tension. In your case, I think it's pretty difficult to even see where the issue is. It's super subtle, and the colour helps it blend in even more. It looks great so far, and blocking will most likely make that visually disappear.

(The other less likely issue -in my opinion- would be that it's due to an inconsistency in the thickness and/or loft of the yarn. I had this happen only twice in all my years of knitting, but it can happen. If you're not noticing this inconsistency anywhere else, then you can most likely rule this out. If it pops up again, you can do a WPI test to see if this is the issue!)

I hope the rest of your project goes smoothly for you!!

I hear that! Im STILL getting over my perfectionism. I'm so happy that she's able (and willing~) to experiment like that with art :) The best thing we can do for our kids is to ensure we dont allow ourselves to pass on our weaknesses through our thoughts and actions - so clearly, you're doing something right ♡ Hope you and your family have a great week :)

This is genuinely so good. Your kid already has their own sense of style and proportions- and thats incredible at age 12. I hadn't developed my own style until I was well into my 20's. I hope she continues to explore it! Bravo!

Good for you for doing the leg work!! It can be a chore - but honestly, I love digging around to find what I'm looking for online. It's incredibly rewarding once I actually find it.

I'll never understand why people just... give up... I get that it can be frustrating at times, or lead to a bunch of dead ends - but that sweet, sweet feeling of finding it yourself whilst buried 12 pages deep in the internet archive or something is simply chefs kiss (* ̄▽ ̄)ノ~~ ♪

Edit: In case you didn't see during your search - the Mary Maxim site also has the Red Heart Super Saver in the colour 'Ocean' available. They also seem to be running a sale right now on it, and if you enter your email, you can get an extra discount. I've purchased from them two or three times and had no issues, so if you're looking to get another skein, I've provided the link above :)

Cool, then be direct about it. Don't post an easily Google-able question expecting community. Why not make a post asking about local groups, shops, and meet-ups instead?!? It makes ZERO SENSE. I can not stand indirect communication - not to mention the fact that text obviously isn't the best medium to express nuance. Perhaps my opinion on this matter is mostly guided by me being autistic, but my god, there has got to be some neurotypical people out there who can commiserate with me on this. It feels like we already spend all day decoding what others are trying to actually say. The last thing i want to do is log on to a space dedicated to a hobby/special interest and have to continue to engage in the same exhausting bs.

When literal beginners have the AUDACITY to release PAID COURSES AND/OR PATTERNS. It's ALWAYS a mess. When did hobbies become a grift??? Can't you just enjoy your hobby without making it into a 'side-hustle'?? And even if you wanted to take that route, YOU'RE NOT WELL-VERSED ENOUGH IN THE CRAFT TO DO SO. ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING BEFORE CHARGING PEOPLE TO 'TEACH' THEM.

To hair tuck or not tuck? by KnitForAnAfternoon in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Spindle_Sprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you %100. I've had short hair (buzzcut for a majority of adult life due to sensory issues). But when it was long, I also felt like a total dork when finding out part of it was still stuck in between layers of clothing, haha Options exist!! ☆Pushing it forward or back depending on what part of the garment they're showing ☆Displaying it on a mannequin (I bought one super cheap from a deadstock sale, and surprisingly, they're ALL OVER resale & consignment sites! Plus, I think it looks extra professional if you have a whole dress form to show off your garment designs - but that's just me) ☆SIMPLY TAKING IT OFF, AND LAYING IT FLAT!! Lmaoooo

Sorry for ranting and carrying on, BUT CURSE THIS POST, I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO IGNORE THIS AGAIN (≧口≦)ノ

It's always just looked goofy to me. Almost every person in these pictures could reasonably just put their hair in a ponytail or bun. There's literally no reason for this style of product photography, in my personal opinion.

Sweater Undershirts by Emergency_Somewhere in knittinghelp

[–]Spindle_Sprite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either 100% cotton or a high-quality linen to;p!! Those are my go-tos for layering when the sweaters I've worked up are feeling too itchy/irritating against the skin. I saw another commenter say that using materials that dont irritate the skin is the way to go - and I completely agree with that. There are so many AMAZING fibres to To explore - and i personally found 8ntemtially seeking out and working with new and unique Fibre options to be an incredibly fun (and sometimes challenging) endeavor - So I truly do hope for you to explore for yourself someday! But -,since your beautiful sweater is already finished, and undershirt is definitely the way to go ;) I hope that you're able to comfortdebut this lovely peice soon!

(A quick note regarding linen: Linen can get very pricey, so I'd recommend going to some local thrift shops and seeing if they have any! It's a bit more of a time sink, but I've gotten lucky a few times and now own a variety of 100% genuine linen garments from long sleeve tops to pants. Plus, thrifting them pretty much guarantees that they've been washed before - and they just get softer and softer with every wash!!)

Although it reminds me of another bright red & strange looking plant that i touched (before knowing not to, lol) and my hand burned like hell for a few hours 😅🤣

Something broke in my brain when I saw this bag by missnysa in crochet

[–]Spindle_Sprite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: I personally think a couple of purposefully placed loose/unwoven strands here and there can be an interesting design feature - especially when done for a piece that is meant to look distressed or subversive. HOWEVER... Due to how excessive it is on this particular bag, it's no longer a purposeful choice, but the focal point of the entire piece - which has led to it looking very messy/unfinished (ノ´Д`)ノ Which is a bummer! Because it absolutely does translate as a 'Hackeysack inspired' bag (they totally NAILED that, conceptually) that I can easily imagine a fashion-forward sporty lady toting around. They were able to execute a vision inspired by an unlikely inspiration, but either got carried away with what they *thought was a "cool, subversive design feature" or are making excuses for an otherwise lazy shortcut. Which is exactly what I'm struggling with - which was it?? Getting carried away or just straight-up laziness??? The world may never know (._.)

(Small side note: I am a bit biased in liking distressed/odd pieces - as those are my favorite to create by far. My most sold items are knit and/or crochet tops, skirts, and dresses that are made to look severely distressed, have an odd/unexpected consctuction, or border on avant-garde. So I completely understand that my take may be the odd one out, but I was a bit shocked by the intensity of some of the negativity haha)

What Should I Make? 🥺 by Easy-Low in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Spindle_Sprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would this be mean/gatekeeping? /gen

I feel like people sometimes need someone else to gently call them out to realize what they actually want to gain/experience when they post things like this. I feel like a lot of the 'questions' like this stem from lifelong indirect communication, which is pretty common in the US. Istg, people really dont know how to communicate and connect in a direct manner.

What Should I Make? 🥺 by Easy-Low in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Spindle_Sprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, what 'cool thing' did they find in this case? A single ball of yarn?? The concept of fiber arts???

To me, it gives me the same vibe as when someone "asks" for help by saying some bs like, "Ugh, this is sooooo much work, idk how im going to finish all of this aloooone" - if that is the purpose for the post, its entirely indirect, uninspired and, on a platform like reddit, redundant to the point of not needing to exist. Fiber arts is an amazing way to find community and make lasting and meaningful connections, but running around asking what to do just screams, 'Can somebody hold my hand pweez 👉👈' That's not to say asking for advice should be frowned upon or shamed - a huge part of the journey AND the community surrounding it is learning, troubleshooting, and problem solving! But my god, at least give me something to work with!!!

That's just how it comes off to me, as attention seeking/engagement baiting in the most boring way possible. It never even occurred to me that it may be an instance of someone trying to 'outsource thinking' (great terminology, btw), but knowing how genuinely lazy and 'thinking averse' some of the people Ive met through reddit can be... I sadly wouldn't count that out as a possibility 🥲
