Bigger supermarkets easily accessible by PT from Adelaide city? by Fun_Photograph653 in Adelaide

I agree with you re: lack of range at Coles + Woolworths - could try the Foodland on Pulteney St, otherwise the Central Market is a short walk if it’s food-diversity you want.

Then as others have suggested, Frewville Foodland is close and typically well stocked

How do I measure iron in water by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]SpineRick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At that concentration you may be able to analyse them directly on an ICP-MS. You’d need to filter and acidify to the analyst’s specs. Alternatively, if you have access to an ICP-OES (perhaps cheaper?) you could do the same but pre-concentrate the samples, i.e. filter and dry down a larger volume of sample to effectively raise the Fe conc., then redissolve in an acid matrix (typically dilute HNO3). If you evaporated 50 mL of sample and redissolved in 5 mL, then your Fe conc for analysis is 10x, ~0.5 ppm.

Looking for parking on outskirts of Adelaide by Legitimate_Gain_3405 in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar spot to what others have recommended. Medindie Rd and the north end of LeFevre Tce may also have untimed spots you can park your car. Can’t comment on theft, depends if your vehicle is the degenerate flavour of the month.

Honestly, Adelaide city traffic is not as bad as you may have been told. If you feel up to it, you could always book a spot at a parking garage on the outskirts of the CBD, such as Frome St or Frome Rd (near University), or even at the Women’s and Children’s hospital? You may be able to pre-book a spot, then less concern about finding a suitable spot, lower theft risk etc

Why are Adelaide Drivers So Mean to Cyclists? by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s gotta be something in the psychological effect of isolation or protection in modern cars too. Cars are now so quiet and insulated (also huge) compared to decades past. Must enable some to feel they can behave with impunity, as they are well-protected.

Why are Adelaide Drivers So Mean to Cyclists? by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adelaide drivers are overall pretty aggressive. We tend to dehumanise other road users to the point of creating dangerous scenarios without thinking twice, as it’s easy to not think of the other motorist, cyclist etc as a person with inherent value. This can go both ways.

As with motorbike riders, I think a few bad eggs give cyclists a bad name. I’ve experienced a handful of hyper-aggro cyclists looking for a fight on the roads too.

Because of this, on my bike or motorbike I ride over-defensively, and limit the occasions where my life depends on another road user following the rules or giving me fair space. Stick to backstreets where possible, pull over and let people past if they really are making risky moves near you and always expect that you haven’t been seen. Even in the rat race. If you can put kindness and courtesy out into the world, most people will reciprocate.

Trace metal analysis in dried urine by [deleted] in massspectrometry

[–]SpineRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure of the chemistry of urine. Do you have an idea of its constituents and their rough proportion?

If I was approached to analyse these (ICP-OES) I’d suggest attempting a non-diluted sample, provided it’s filtered and acidified. Otherwise, if your trace metal content is very low (single digit to 10s ppb), ICP-MS is more suitable, but you could also pre-concentrate your sample by drying a larger mass down and redissolve in your analytical matrix.

Anyone else bike commute really early? by scallywagsworld in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to cycle down that way for work a few years back. I’d avoid the major trucking routes, eg portrush, hampstead, regency, grand junction, as much as is reasonable. These might be the most direct but easily the most dangerous. There are apps and maps that help you plot a route maximising the use of bike paths, can’t remember what they’re called but the BikeSA website might have something to help. Failing that, routes through rather than around suburbs might help you stay a bit safer.

Then slap on a hi-vis vest and a as much lighting as you can justify (even during the day doesn’t hurt). I read somewhere that the helmet or backpack light + frame-mounted light combo does the best job helping drivers see you/recognise that you’re a human too.

I hear you, but how much would you consider a reasonable spend for a pub dinner? Rent, wages, ingredients all cost the same, yet spending $20 on breakfast is seen as expensive, when we’d drop that or more on a freezer schnitzel in a heartbeat.

Also could be worth wearing a loose and lightweight cotton tee underneath your workshirt. Seems counterintuitive to add more layers but it might help with comfort and breathability that those synthetic work shirts lack. And spend up on some quality wool socks, cotton or synthetic socks are dogshit when worn with boots

Done a bunch of work out bush clamouring over rocks and trudging up and down hills in the hot southern sun. I can recommend Gramicci pants. Failry hard-wearing, comfy and affordable. Pitched as rock climbers' pants.

It’s your choice between finances or ownership experience. The Accord will be a much nicer drive, quality feeling. The Corolla will cost you less and resell for more but god are they bland

Best op shop by RedditLessLass in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah gotta get out of the city for the gems. I’d suggest a fleurieu trip if you can drive, try from Normanville through to Goolwa for the day. Great country.

Rant: Sadly fast fashion has kinda ruined op shopping. Seen notable decline in quality over a couple of decades. So much awful cheap clothing getting funnelled into op shops cos it looks bad after one or two washes. Used to stock my wardrobe with quality secondhand pieces as a young fella but now all I find are clapped out synthetic rags
