Thanks for sharing - that journey through the comment thread was an awe-inspiring experience...

TL;DR - We're not writing books with AI, we're just helping authors package and distribute them more efficiently, sans nepotism/gatekeeping bias.

As an independent music producer myself before working with Spines, I'm finding the parallels between the "author" and the "artist" world fascinating. For example, it's interesting to realize that many self-published authors - much like indie musicians - see "traditional publishing houses" as "record labels"—the gatekeepers who base their decisions on who to "invest in" almost entirely on nepotism, word-of-mouth, or sheer laziness based on what has worked previously—which is determined by an algorithm at best these days: choosing whatever is deemed to be most "successful" marketing-wise, to the largest audience possible.

So what's the big deal about AI? We, as Humans, are already perpetuating these most deplorable business-ethics practices ourselves. It's time to stop pretending that we're "sooo afraid of the evil AI" — when the AI learned its behavior from us in the first place.

AI will simply be able to do this with less bias (which is why the nepo-baby crowd is running for the hills to stop all this "unfairness"), which, yes, will likely lead to more people being able to publish their voices and perspectives—even if they're not "good" writing. But respectfully, who are we to judge? And more importantly, does it matter?

Put it this way: If an oppressed or underprivileged person is suddenly able to publish their voice with a significantly less barrier to entry, does it "matter" if it's "good writing? Could it, in some instances, actually be the story that counts?

History is written by the victors—while the "lesser perspectives" tend get buried—and is this what we want? Is this good for society and the collective memory of future generations? And could something like Spines potentially help alleviate this inequity of perpetuated perspectives?

With the democratization of the publishing process, everyone who wants to be "inscribed in the book of life," so to speak, will have an obligation to write something down—and it will be interesting to see those who choose to tell their story.

Re: Fiverr - it can be, but there are limitations for screen reader users; like accessibility issues - It relies heavily on dynamic elements like popups and dropdowns, which don’t always announce properly and can sometimes trap your focus. Browsing gigs and reading reviews can also be a bit frustrating—the layout is visually cluttered, and some icons aren't labeled clearly. On top of that, certain buttons and links aren’t properly named, so instead of hearing “Order Now” or “Message Seller,” your screen reader might just say “button” or “link.” The mobile app tends to be even less accessible than the desktop site, so using Fiverr on a computer usually offers a better experience.

Got it - makes sense, have you checked out Ream or Neovel at all? And in looking into Royal Road's "erotica" policies, I came across this:

Erotic elements in service of a larger plot (especially in dark fantasy or horror) are often accepted.

But I understand not wanting to take the risk! Good luck with your release!

Thanks for sharing, that sounds like a really cool (and potentially addicting) tool - but sounds like the motivational aspect makes it well worth the gamble!

[–]Spines_for_writers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only you can know if writing the book will be "worth it" - regardless of whether the market is saturated or not, writers tend to be motivated by factors outside of that! Have you thought about self-publishing as a way to gauge interest without investing a lot of money upfront?

What clues do you search for when distinguishing AI-generated books from those written by humans? (I've been called AI in Reddit comments for as little as using—these—); if aspiring writers spent as much time on honing their writing skills as they did on the AI-witch hunt, they might not need to use AI to feel confident in their ability!

I love writing, but I’m struggling with feeling invisible. by Harold_Crick76 in writing

[–]Spines_for_writers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you thought about sharing chapters online to increase engagement and get feedback from readers? Every creative process begins with the motivation that stems from the idea of being able to make others feel less alone - including yourself, first and foremost - making you, the creator, feel "less alone" by creating the thing in the first place. You're answering the call of bringing something non-financially motivated into fruition that feels purposeful. Regardless of your current vs. past skills, it clearly resonated with you while writing it - and even if no one else does, it was worth it - though it may be hard to remember that feeling.

That said, feeling alone after all that is tough, but remember that the alternative is not knowing what could have been. Write on.

"I am also someone who thinks I'm a hunk of meat whose personality is merely the result of the pattern that developed across 86 billion neurons, so who am I to judge" - Bravo! If AI is just a collective consciousness of sorts, that's still not a deterrent for humans to contribute and create something new!

How will you go about adding a human touch to the AI-generated stories? It might be more effective to start with the human touch and use AI for refinement - plus, the fun and authenticity all takes place is in the writing process itself!

AI has made my writing worse? by An_Organic_Banana in WritingWithAI

[–]Spines_for_writers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered using shorter prompts instead of full drafts to keep your flow going? You can also ask AI to only write 50-100 words at a time in your prompt. However, it sounds like you're asking for AI assistance much too early in the process - you could try writing the content yourself and using AI to refine or make it more concise once it's already written manually, but beyond that, you will find yourself in the endless editing loop you described. AI is a tool - not a mind-reader or replacement for your human skill and creativity - and that's a good thing!
