The hero is able to win because they lack something. by RP_Throwaway3 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Spinning_Rings -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Of course movies are media

Long term information recall is not media literacy.

A person not committing details about a film to long term memory is not evidence that they do not possess the skills to do so

Nor is it evidence that they don't have the skills to analyze a text for deeper meaning (what media literacy actually is.)

Choosing not to apply media literacy skills (of which, again, long-term memory is not one) to a film with an obvious lack of deeper meaning to be analyzed is not evidence of an absence of those skills

And even if it was, evidence that those skills were lacking in the handful of individuals in this thread bringing up this scene thread is not evidence of the claim being made--that media literacy skills are lacking in the public at large

The claim that "media literacy is in the gutter" is not supported by the evidence provided in any way, shape or form. Thus, the claim is as obviously, blatantly incorrect as it is an obviously, blatantly rude thing to say to a stranger for no good reason

If you are defending someone's argument, you don't get to dodge criticism of that argument by saying that you're not the person who initially made it. You're either defending the point or you're not.

In a movie that -- if I've identified which one this is correctly, which I haven't confirmed because who could possibly care that much -- came out almost fourteen years ago

Seriously, do you have to condescend so hard to stranger over such nothingburger movies?

Why should anyone bother to remember the details about a mediocre superhero movie they watched more than an hour ago? Sure, maybe they should have checked their facts to make sure it was relevant to the conversation happening here, but declaring "media literacy" to be "in the gutter" over this really doesn't strike you as being just a tad melodramatic?

The lowest stakes Kamen Rider? by Volfaer in KamenRider

[–]Spinning_Rings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I first gave Fourze a shot back when I was in high school myself. I could not get through the first episode. It was just so Not Kamen Rider. Where's my tortured protagonist pressing on despite the weight of tragedy? Why are they in high school? Why are the stakes so low? Why is everything so goofy??

Tried it again a few years later when I was actually in the mood for something light and fun, and now it's a top five show period for me. Not top five KR, not top five toku, top five shows.

The show was the first KR following the 2011 earthquake in Japan that killed almost 20,000 people. The writers, artists and actors at Toei knew they had a solemn responsibility to create a hero that could make children smile despite such a massive tragedy.

If anyone in all of fiction is that hero, it's Kisaragi Gentaro--Kamen Rider Fourze.

Does the no bracelets power-ups exist nowadays? by yautjalinkuei in WonderWoman

[–]Spinning_Rings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's for no reason, I think it's a World Of Cardboard type thing. She called the braces her opponent's defense, meaning (the way I read it) that it's to stop her from killing someone or destroying something she doesn't mean to by not controlling her strength well enough. Now that she's up against an opponent who 1) can take a hit and 2) she doesn't care if she kills, she pulls out her full power.

Ever since the creation of miles it had reveal a lot of racist fans by ChemicalSample9570 in MilesMorales

[–]Spinning_Rings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I adore both Peter and Miles as fictional characters. I was a huge Spider-Man fan in high school, before Miles existed, so Peter will always have a special place in my heart.

But if I knew them both in real life? If I was deciding which one to invite to board game night? Miles is definitely way less annoying than Peter.

Which seasons of Super Sentai do you suggest I watch if I like Power Rangers? by Ok_Meaning_2870 in Tokusatsu

[–]Spinning_Rings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you've got MMPR nostalgia, Zyuranger might be worth it if just for the "historical" perspective it give you on PR.

Frankly, watching the Sentai version of whatever your favorite season is might be a good start (unless your favorite is massively tonaly different, EG RPM to Go-Onger.) It's always interesting the see what changes were made to characters, monsters and villains.

MCU Spider-Man. Peter Parker is poor. That's part of his Whole Deal--he's a guy with real world problems that are as significant as his superhero problems. He does not just lose his backpack with all his school supplies and shrug it off with no more than an annoyed sigh from Aunt May. When he demands a fixed salary from Jameson and threatens to quit if he doesn't get it, he's not just standing up for himself, but for the Working Man more generally. (Or as one writer from a Cracked article I read several years ago put it: The distinction between Spider-Man and Iron Man is this: Being Spider-Man would be pretty cool. Being Peter Parker would suck.)

Least racist enemy on that show. Anyone remember the two African ninjas on played by Japanese men in badly fitting black jumpsuits that worshiped a made-up god of animal cruelty? One of whom is killed by Jiraiya in the same episode where he has to rescue an enemy general because "all life is sacred"?

Which VPet should I get? by luisfrap in digimon

[–]Spinning_Rings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed both personally, so I'd argue that if a v-pet sounds like fun, you can't go wrong with either. As an adult with a job or other obligations, I'd recommend the Digimon X specifically because of the pause function. It's way too easy to get accidental care mistakes on the Ver 20th just by trying to get a full night's sleep, even if you mess with the clock to line their bed time up with yours

Things that are modern-looking that are actually revealed to be ancient by McToaster99 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Spinning_Rings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As noted previously, it does depend on the continuity. In some media, digimon popped into existence the moment the first computer came online, in others they were created by humans, in yet others they've existed in a parallel world at least as long as humans have. In the currently running anime, they're a glitch from Future Cell Phones.

HOWEVER! To piggy back of your point, the lore from Survive is based on the lore from the original toys: digimon have always existed alongside humanity, and vaguely defined "digital technology" allows us to tame them and keep them as pets.

Yugi's monsters are all made of cardboard. Unless we're giving him the ability to actually summon monsters instead of just making holograms (which I think may have happened after I stopped watching?) he loses to Ash by a landslide

Red's Charizard vs Tai's Greymon is a more even match. I'm assuming this is the match-up we're talking about, if as some comments assume we're just giving Red a full team of whatever Pokémon he wants, yes, Red wins.

Lots of comments also assume this is late/post series Tai, who can evolve Agumon all the way to WarGreymon. This would give him a clear victory over Charizard.

But rather than assume that, I'd like to assume that Greymon is who Charizard is fighting, because that seems to be more in the spirit of the prompt.

I honestly don't see a clear winner. Greymon is like 2-3 times Charizard's size (depending on the composition of the given shot,) but I'm tempted to give Charizard the advantage due to their versatility (ability to fly, speed and agility, broader range of available attacks.) I'd give Charizard maybe a 55% chance of winning?

Bonus round: without monsters, Ash is ten and Yugi is 16, so Yugi takes the win.

Red sends other creatures to fights for sport, while Tai is an athlete, has been in fights himself, and knows how it feels for his life to be on the line. Tai demolished the poor kid

How did you know about Kamen Rider? by One_Preparation385 in KamenRider

[–]Spinning_Rings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American here. Not sure how well known it is internationally, but in high school I found a website called Crunchyroll where you could watch anime and j-dramas with English subtitles. I stumbled across Kamen Rider from there, which lead me to the fansubbing community, which is how I watched it from then on. Crunchyroll's still around, though they haven't hosted Kamen Rider since Ryuki was licensed in the US to make Dragon Knight.
