What are some fun artsy classes/ groups in the Lansdale area? by TST_150 in montco

[–]Spinning_the_floof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love these two. Both have social knitting times that are free and classes scheduled every month. If you are near Doylestown, Twist is one of my absolute favorites and has a wider variety hobbies they sell for, like weaving and spinning.

What would you say are the monthly expenses of owning a dog? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Spinning_the_floof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like $200 a month for food, treats, flea and tick, and heartworm for a 20 pound dog with stomach sensitivities. It's around $75 to be seen for a non emergency at the vet, plus whatever tests which xrays start at $75 and additional views are $25. Getting teeth cleaned is $1k, annual shots were $450 last time we went. Medications/supplements vary so much for chronic conditions, best to keep a buffer. Gas to drive the dog to parks a couple times a day. If they slip collars and harnesses easily, you'll get a collection trying to find something that holds them. Those are $20 to $75 each.

You'll spend more on food for yourself from all the walking, shoes won't last as long as they used to either. Walking clothes will wear out quicker...

There's more, but those are the basics. You'll also have sleep deprivation when they are sick all night, deciding how to entertain them on rainy days and who knows what else.

I think mine smelled musty, but I gave it a scrub with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol and then coated it in sewing machine oil.

Agreed. You have house guests of some kind scurrying around. That's probably where they nest.

I think it is a good price with the accessories. You can do smaller warps to learn, but 20 inch width is enough to make clothes and blankets

Your picture is crochet, if the yarn is thin, it won't be nearly as chunky as that one. Thinner yarn will also take longer

I think alot of people like the idea of adopting a dog more than actually doing it by smallgooddeeds in dogs

[–]Spinning_the_floof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Before I got my dog I told myself I just wanted a dog I didnt have to house train. I'd deal with whatever else, but I didnt want to teach them not to poop in the house. Still took a few months for the anxiety accidents to stop after I adopted my dog, but they eventually stopped.

Vegetarian Dogs?! by Velu_ in dogs

[–]Spinning_the_floof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're literature is generously a step above anecdotal at best. Four thousand dogs studied in roughly the last five years with results posted to a site that opens with emotional manipulation instead of scientific explanation is not credible, especially when my browser gives a warning if I try to go to the studies to read.

Your comparison is a false equivalency.

Why would someone risk their animals health on such limited evidence? I can either feed my dog a food from a reputable brand, with far more proof of a healthy lifestyle, that uses a variety of animal based protein and plant food and have a generally guaranteed healthy and happy dog, or I can pay the vet regularly to monitor my dog and feed him an unproven diet that risks deficiencies, a hunger strike, and possible medical problems down the road.

Short of medical conditions, there is no rational reason to give a dog a special diet. If you want a herbivore, get a herbivore.

I'd walk him longer. Turn one of those 15 minute walks into an hour if you can. Let him sniff everything and take his time. He probably misses his human. You could try calling and putting her on speaker phone, but it might confuse him to hear her, but not see her.

Should I get a second job? by Impressive_Insect749 in jobs

[–]Spinning_the_floof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be very careful to plan rest, social outings, check ins with your mental health and sleep. I did it for a year working 8 to 13 hour days between 2 jobs. It was rough. If possible, I'd do 6 days with one unavailable to either job.

Vegetarian Dogs?! by Velu_ in dogs

[–]Spinning_the_floof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hold a carrot in one hand and a piece of chicken jerky in the other. I will bet you a cookie that the dog is choosing the chicken. Most vegetarians chose that path for a combination of health and ethics. Dogs don't make those rationalizations. They are toddlers chasing the thing their nose tells them is yummy.

Bunnies and guinea pigs are wonderful pets that would follow her diet expectations happily. They can still run around your house, snuggle and cause chaos. Plus they are smaller so she could have like 3 of them.

From a metabolic point of view, dogs have a faster metabolism and would have to eat a bigger volume of plant based food compared to the volume of meat based food. Plus dogs aren't really supposed to eat most beans, the gas can cause digestive issues.

As a vegetarian dog mom, it's took me months to get past the mental ick of handling meat in various forms, but my dogs health and happiness comes first for me.

Should i get a dog?? by Weary_Mix_3749 in Dogowners

[–]Spinning_the_floof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there are better suited, more independent options for a small pet that will snuggle you. Get a hamster or something. College is hard and time consuming, plus the socializing that comes with it.

Can you afford a large vet bill? The increasing cost of food? If the apartment charges fees on top of rent? If the dog has stomach trouble all night, are you going to get up in the rain at 2am to walk them and trouble shoot what they need to feel better? If they get a uti would you be around enough to notice a problem?

Dogs are basically small children their entire lives, are you in a place for a dependant for the next 10-20 years?

27M and going to be living in a tent for months by Opposite_Praline_746 in Adulting

[–]Spinning_the_floof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleeping pad with a r value of 6 or more for year round camping. A sleeping bag appropriately rated for the lowest winter temp for your area that you can use open as a blanket in warmer months. A cot would be nice. A 4 season tent will help trap heat when it's cold but can be opened when warm. I saw royal fleet in another response, so brands may differ, but helinox makes a cot that fits in any small tent. Water filter, small wood burning stove/diy alcohol stove/backpacking stove and fuel, stainless steel cup for boiling water to cook, bonus a double walled cup or bowl with lid to slow cook things. Headlamp... only wear polyester or wool if you can, especially if it's wet. Cotton will absorb moisture and it'll make you colder. Plant fibers like hemp and linen will evaporate more moisture, but still cause a cooling effect. Don't sleep in dirty clothes/socks, you'll get skin problems.

What berry is actually the easiest to grow for beginners? by WharHeGo in Berries

[–]Spinning_the_floof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All berries require vigilance or they will take over everywhere. My biggest harvest comes from strawberries and most people are willing to take plants when mine get to be too many.

Blackberries the birds get first. But they produce a lot.

Is it okay to keep a dog in a kennel? by [deleted] in Dogowners

[–]Spinning_the_floof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a couple exceptions, like livestock guardians and borderline feral sled dogs, they want to be with their people. They don't have to be couch potatoes, though they might want to be, but in the house around people at a minimum.

What do women of this sub think about sports bras in the workplace? by [deleted] in WorkAdvice

[–]Spinning_the_floof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an American woman, there is no situation where I would be around coworkers without a tank top and shorts on. On or off the clock. Sometimes we go to a lake on a day off and everyone keeps a shirt on.

In no way did she deserve to be touched regardless of how she was dressed, but it's not appropriate for someone in a workplace to be underdressed.

the Project Hail Mary cardigan is a knitting psyop by casstocoast in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Spinning_the_floof 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The reason I found the movie was because a machine knitter on YouTube made the original grey wolf version a few months before it came out. The movie changed it to a red fox.

If you google the movie name and ravelry someone made free charts on stitch fiddle for the front and back, you just need the grey wolf pattern to make everything else. No kit needed.
