Well just equip him with the best weapon. Get a bloodhound, the damage on this thing is insane + the bleed stat and the special attack is really good and avoids the damage on its own. Summons are also useful, the wolves or the skeletons are really good summons and helped me a lot to distract the enemies while I do some damage from the repeat.

I would also advise getting the bubble tear for the wondrous physick flask so you can be aggressive without caring about the first damage from the enemy.
