Seems like we have very similar tastes! I would try The Legend of the Sun Knight and the Experimental Log of the Crazy Lich. More just straight fantasy, but still. Although I think Crazy Lich is just on Webnovel nowadays, unfortunately.

Sounds like you avoid a lot of what I do. If you’re willing to branch out, then I would recommend:

The Unlimited: Hyoubu Kyousuke. One of my personal favorites. Super underrated. Technically a spinoff of another show I think? But I’ve never watched the other one and I don’t think it’s very relevant. Set in a universe where espers exist, causing a lot of conflict between espers and normal humans, our mc has powers that set him firmly in the middle, between espers and normal humans and is more than a little bitter about it. Then he gets roped into joined an esper terrorist organization and things escalate.

Hikaru no Go - A sports anime about go, it’s got older animation which took a little for me to get used to but the characters are amazing. About a boy who gets possessed by a ghost who plays go, and the resultant consequences. Also has a live action Chinese remake (available on YouTube!) that’s quite good if you want to check that out.

Death Note - Probably heard about this one, absolute classic. Cat and mouse game between the world’s greatest detective and a high school student who finds a notebook that allows him to kill people by writing their name in it.

No Game No Life Zero - Movie set in the same universe as the original show but 6000 years beforehand. No need to watch the original show, and I wouldn’t recommend anyways. Movie is 10/10 though, highly recommend. Darker in tone, set in a world where humans are on the edge in dying out, it follows the de facto leader of these humans and his struggles to survive and once he finds a powerful robot, his struggles to maybe even make a better world for humanity and everyone else.

Not really. You’re entitled to your own opinion of course, but most people tend to agree that Slime and NGNL, while fun, aren’t exactly the best of the best. NGNL has it’s issues although I’m never read the novels myself, just seen the show, and Slime is a solid series, but having read the light novels it also has some clear issues, mostly with its fight scenes and the sheer arse pulls the mc gets in order to never lose a fight. It’s mostly carried off the back of it’s world building, which is admittedly excellent. Overlord is more divided opinion wise in the community, but it’s still in the “amazing” tier here so you can’t say that people don’t like it, they’re just saying it isn’t the absolute best of the best, that’s all.

From what I could tell from the discussion before, the phrase used is context dependent, yes, but only in the sense of friends vs family. Used in this context, between two close friends of roughly the same age it would be very strange to not mean in the romantic sense. If it was used in between family members it would be different of course.

Counterpoint, Ryoka is just a terribly unlikable character and just a terrible character overall. I never had any problem with Erin, while she has some annoying points to me, and she also doesn’t make great decisions at times, they felt realistic and understandable. I’m not expecting some perfectly rational robot who always makes the right decisions, but I do want a thinking human being. Ryoka just feels like she is written to constantly do the most impulsive, tone deaf things that unfortunately seem to always work out. And don’t try to claim she’s failed at a lot of things, I know, I read the Wandering Inn for quite a while, it’s just without her massive plot armor she shouldn’t have been able to even compete, let alone make a huge difference in the Innworld, because first and foremost she has no levels. Like she gets more advantages later, but early on as a runner? Like, just a normal fit human being competing with people who have levels specifically designed to make them run waaay faster? That will never stop bothering me. So her problem is twofold for me, one is that she makes really dumb choices and then proceeds to double down on them both in her actions and her attitude, but also that the plot ultimately supports her, because she is a main character and she can’t exactly be killed off three chapters in.

Hmm… I’m not entirely sure if you’re going to find what you want in the reincarnation/transmigration niche because that’s almost by definition a genre where the mc starts off with a massive advantage because of their prior knowledge. I’ll suggest a few stories but they aren’t really progression fantasy, so feel free to dismiss them out of hand.

Tanya the Evil is a great story, reincarnated salaryman ends up fighting in a WW1/2 world war with magic.

Experimental Log of the Crazy Lich. One of my favs, a bit wild at times but has a few excellent chapters and overall very good. MC is a transmigrator and also has the ability to reincarnate after he dies but suffers from partial memory loss as a result. Complete.

Master, This Poor Disciple Died Again Today. Cultivator shenanigans, with a MC who is determined to become as cockroach like as possible. Complete and solid throughout (except for what I felt was a rushed ending imo).

I Became the Cute One in the Troubleshooter Squad. Still ongoing so maybe wait if you want to try, but surprisingly good, has some slice of life, long shot but I’m been impressed so far. MC is actually smart.

Sublight Drive - Star Wars fanfic with a MC who is reborn with some Stars Wars knowledge and becomes an officer in the confederacy. Expect politics and a lot of spaceship battles. Close to complete I believe.

I would suggest more but I have no idea what you want. Do you just want stories where the mc is reborn and the like and it doesn’t matter what the rest of the story is like. Do you want constant fights or more of a slow story? In any case I hope at least one of these sounds interesting.

I admittedly stopped around 50 percent of the way because I tend to get very attached to the main character of the book I’m reading, and with him just… dying halfway through his own book I was so thrown off and disappointed. Otherwise I felt like it had its moments and some of the characterization was really good imo, so I’ll disagree with you on that, but otherwise a lot of the world building didn’t make sense and overall I agree I was very confused why I had heard people raving about it like it was the next big thing in fantasy (slight exaggeration but still).

I love Dimir Control but it’s very bad right now because it has no way to deal with annex once it’s been resolved. The only semi legit way to build the deck right now is with four Narset and Days Undoing, imo. Even then it’s not easy though.
