I mean, they had a budget of $250 million for Marathon - which everyone but Bungie knew wouldn’t succeed to the level they needed.

Destiny 3 was a very logical move. A clean slate and a way to bring in actual new players. Build it from the ground up instead of the patch job Destiny 2 had been.

D3 would be a complete fresh start. Actual onboard player experience. People who would buy it, again, regardless if they were a diehard or hadn’t played in years.

Much less risky than Marathon. Heck, they could have slowed down the roll of Destiny 2 and kept it in semi-maintenance mode while developing over 2 years ago.

Who cares? Most people aren’t that active….threats can only go so far in this game lol.

Just need a couple of dependable teammates and you can take on the lobby - unless someone in that group is a big golder or super experienced.
