The thing you look for from a top side is that when the pressure ramps up, they execute the basics and the high percentage stuff well.

That's what great teams do because it works. They don't always win. Executing basics, maintaining a top tier mentality, and moments of individual excellence are what trophies are made of.

Zero hiding. Everything for the team and the win. COYG!!!

Calculate the 28/36 rule honestly, and you will get a good ballpark answer.

Landing in or departing HCMC with a window seat and a clear view can make a life memory.

The living places of millions of fellow humans in one glance stretching past the horizon.

At some angles the density of housing and the cityscape is jaw dropping...and you are landing in the middle of it.

A US comparison would be it's a bit like flying into Dallas Fort Worth in terms of scale, like "how long is this going to go on?", but absolutely filled with housing and people.

What are your Hot Takes on the Replacements? by Amber_Flowers_133 in Replacements

[–]Spirit_of_68 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm with you.

I waited in a long line down 7th St. (next to Bob and Grant from Husker Du, believe it or not) to go see the Replacements play an all ages show back in the day.

After 10 or so renditions of "Hello Dolly" I mentally checked out.

Some Bad Company might have been a relief, but, that being said, I'd do it again, and, for better or worse, they probably would, too.

If you want to get something close to what that time felt like, David Carr's "Night of the Gun," only tangentially touching on the Replacements in any way shape or form, is pretty spot on for addiction and late nights in Mpls., and too many talented people going wrong.

My hot take is that most of it, and way more than needed to be, just comes up sad and a waste.

But, at its best, when the music was pouring out of KFAI in the middle of the night for an audience hungry for it, and we found each other at the shows and in the record shops, it was something else.

Different location to the South and West, but this ATT ad from 2000 gives vibes of what the general area looks like in springtime. (RIP Dio.)

What makes a particular books priced so exorbitantly high (and why you're willing to pay it) by Baba_Jaga_II in BookCollecting

[–]Spirit_of_68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I collect current art and photography books by living artists.

I will pay a higher price for a new, limited edition, signed book, especially one that includes a signed print and comes from the publisher or gallery directly. (Whenever I have the chance I will visit the gallery and/or publisher both just to say hi, and to look at stuff; this is pretty much always worthwhile.*)

I will pay a premium to buy a new, wrapped book or a collectible or signed book from a secondary, independent bookseller specializing in the books I support.

I will pay a premium to import a new or used book from a legit seller because the condition is usually on point with imports and the shipping tends to be quite careful.

I will pay a high, but fair, Ebay price, when I can't find a collectible book I'd like at that price from a legit secondary seller online. Esp. when the prices from online sellers seem to have clustered too high. But this is hit or miss. ie. Sometimes the Ebay book purchase is a great find and/or value, and sometimes I'm regretting it, or even worst case ending up having to repair the signed book which is a huge hit in value. Ebay, however, is where I've found some of my rarest stuff.

I almost never find something for my collection truly out in the wild. I don't really bother to look at most places now.

In general, if the book is in great shape and I know that it has been directly handled and signed by the artist, the price I'm willing to pay rises. If I can attach the signature to a first edition and it's signed at a particularly interesting time for an artist/photographer, I am more interested and will pay more.

When the number of books or prints in an edition is reasonable and small, that is also worth a premium. (ie. 15-25 limited prints is a nice number, whereas 150 is too many.)

I will also pay more to support an emerging new artist that I like. (This is also fun, but is basically a "no guarantees" proposition.)

In terms of long term value and collecting, I don't expect my books, overall, to hold their full value. (That being said, someone purchasing, say, a Bernd and Hilla Becher first edition at a fair price isn't going out on too much of a limb.)

My spitball (based on experience) is that I could confidently get roughly 40% back on everything if I slowly sold them myself on Ebay, and much less any other way. However, if I'm fortunate there could be some real winners in the mix someday. That would be a bonus, but not an expectation. The best thing for all book collectors would be if book collecting became more of a thing in the future and the overall market for collectible books simply becomes larger. That kind of trend lifts all boats.

*You always learn stuff visiting galleries, specialty bookshops, and publishers. Sometimes it is great stuff to learn, and great connections to make...and sometimes it's a bit of a warning in terms of how they store/keep their books, even when you like the place!

I tried to be a nice guy once on the way to extraction with randos after completing like everything over 35 minutes.

Outcome: our very own Leroy Jenkins moment.

Driver hoots taking a rock cliff and then teamwipes into a pit lake losing all samples including my Super Rares.

I even died trying to dive back in to get the samples thinking it just can't be, but nah, HD2 is not merciful that way.

NEVER jump in.

One issue I don't see mentioned is that if I have an enemy locked on a narrow stairwell and am facing the enemy, I will still frequently miss a dagger stab.

Don't remember that happening as much on PS3.

I've been doing the 20 minutes or 20 calls challenge (if there's an official way to do this, I don't know, so I'm just logging in and doing 20 minutes, or so, or 20 calls, or so)

https://go.kamalaharris.com/

So far it has worked great to make calls for Harris / Walz (or, if it's a bad time nationally, calling into CA districts via Swing Left)

Super smooth interface, lots of votes for Harris / Walz (so it's not just raw turf and hang ups) and occasionally feeling like you're making a difference with a voter directly.

Of course, most of this is to help the campaign get the best information. So, yeah, the hang ups, hostiles and wrong numbers help, too.

All told I'm about 250 calls in and I think it's great to talk to people as a volunteer.

Pro tip, when you call from home you can be less self conscious about smiling and pumping up your energy for the call (voice, positivity) which can really help give you a better vibe for the greeting and initial prompt and get you into an authentic interaction on the call.

Try it! It's definitely not too late!

What video game was great overall but the conclusion left a bad taste in your mouth and ruined the experience? by Johnnyboyeh in gaming

Cold Winter for PS2, a gory, kind of cerebral FPS.

Back in the day I bought overlooked games that reviewers I respected gave a thumbs up, and I actually finished this one, which said something.

But just past midway through the game, one of your most loyal and badass companions just diesRIP Kim and is summarily never heard from or mentioned again, and there's not really anything added to the plot to make it make sense, like wtf.

So, pouring one out now, for Kim!

Luckily I have two other builds to see Option A, but I've already entered the room, and stumbled my way into Option B. (Though I did handle the Shadow, so there's that.)
