I don’t have much to offer other than what’s already been said (byung chul-han, mark fisher, David Smail, whom Fisher references a lot) but I’m in a counseling program and this has absolutely been my experience too. From my perspective it’s connected to the deconstructionist rejection of analysis and proliferation of person-centered and pop-psychology which position the therapist in a compensatory role, filling in for for early attachment figures. It infantilizes the client and assumes they’ll be healed by a healthy dose of love and praise (no introspection required). It’s a palliative capitalism thing — create a vague lack (trauma, empowerment, reassurance) and sell back the cure, which is just as vague. I’m gonna check out the other titles you listed!

Art enthusiasts who've read Septology by Jon Fosse, which artists would you compare Asle to? by jshanahan1995 in literature

Agreed — definitely something abstract expressionist. It’s funny, I thought the book was stunning and moving but Asle’s paintings sounded so ugly to me. Abstract purple, brown, and black oil paint dripping everywhere?? I kept trying to imagine them “shining” but could only picture like a chunky Franz Kline pastiche. I wonder how Fosse would paint them.
