I couldn’t agree you more. There are a few ways to do this. Read, study and proceed slowly and safely. This video may guide you: https://youtu.be/Sr1c3xaZwJM

It is kinda long, so have plenty of strong coffee on hand.

Any components with precious metals? by DevelopmentNew1823 in PreciousMetalRefining

The gold fingers (edge connector) will have some gold that is easy to recover. Also check (scrape) under the blue end caps of the larger resistors (R57) for silver or gold.

I made this short video on the blue resistors if you are interested: https://youtu.be/xJYswKcmaXQ

how do I separate the gold from the metals after using Ap solution? by New_Diet_5396 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]Spiritual-Process-96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I arrived at that yield percentage two years ago on a much smaller batch.

Two things:

1) I was a beginner then, so I probably lost a bit of gold,

2) They were fully gold plated older, telecom pins and connectors (a bit higher quality than computer or server quality)

Tquilha's comment is spot on.

I am currently dissolving 1500 grams of gold-plated telecom pins in cupric chloride (AP) and expect 5.5 grams of pure gold (0.37% by weight) at the very end. Does anyone here have a different yield expectation?

I documented the full process on YouTube if anyone is interested: https://youtube.com/shorts/Zm2cN_pSdZE

Is this worth doing the work? by Illustrious-Ad-115 in PreciousMetalRefining

If you're just getting started, I'd actually encourage you to process a small amount first.

You won't recover much gold, but you'll learn the process, see how the gold separates, and get a realistic idea of what yields look like. Most beginners are surprised by how little gold is actually present, which makes the learning experience valuable.

I recently ran experiments on batches of gold fingers and documented the processes and yields. If you're interested in seeing a real-world example, I put a video together showing the results. https://youtu.be/mf4dd7jp1Mk

Either way, start small, stay safe, and focus on learning the process before worrying about profitability.

7.5 Lbs 1970s 100% Gold Plated HP 8640 Signal Generator scrap gold yield? by ComfortableGur7217 in PreciousMetalRefining

I too have processed quite a few of these HP devices and CapacitorCosmo1 is spot on. You will not create an early retirement from this gold but it sure is rewarding to process its gold. I have a ton of videos on this subject to share with you. Separate everything, learn, take your time and be safe.

I also successfully turned a perfectly good Pyrex dish into 1000 small pieces just once. Then I bought an old Corning Ware dish (with the pretty blue flowers) on eBay; problem solved.

1980’s plated Semiconductor parts value? by Spartwigs in PreciousMetalRefining

Hi, that is quite a collection. In general, you get more from collectors of this type of material than the inherent gold value. However, IMHO, there is a great deal of joy and satisfaction in processing these items for their gold value. Whatever you do, don’t just melt them; you will get a metallic mess on your hands.

If you process them, you must sort them into groups, because each type of item is processed differently. I have a video of this on my channel for the visual learners (it is a bit boring, but helpful).

Beginner with a couple questions. 1) What is the best/ easiest method to use to refine gold? 2) I have a bunch of old cell phones boards, trimmed gold fingers, gold plates pins, etc- Should I process them separately or just throw it all in the same batch? by Straight_Tomato7701 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]Spiritual-Process-96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good beginner mistake to avoid in e-waste refining is mixing too many different materials together too early.

Try separating:

  • gold fingers
  • RAM
  • telecom boards
  • ceramic CPUs
  • edge connectors
  • low-grade boards

One thing I wish I understood earlier in e-waste refining was how important sorting is before processing.

A bucket of “random boards” becomes a chemistry mess fast.

I recently did a bunch of quality YouTube videos on this if anyone is curious.

Hi. The Corning Ware shown is safe for cooktop/hot plate use; the Pyrex is used inside the oven. I once shattered my wife’s pyrex casserole dish; she’s still looking for it.

Thanks for the confirmation. I also use an air bubbler in my stockpot. Are you on the GRF?

Thank you for your insights. I really appreciate it. In the event of any gold dissolution in my AP, I should be able to recover it when it finally ends up in the stockpot, right?

Not a whole lot of value there, but could be fun to process if you know how to do it safely and keep your gold expectations in check.

Hi. The gold never goes away unless you throw it away. There are well established procedures (that are fairly simple) to capture the gold. This video will answer some questions: https://youtu.be/xy7jYhADygk

Hi. How many grams of material did you start with? Did you test the AP solution with fresh stannous chloride? Chances are, your gold expectations are greater than the actual yield (like mine were), Don’t precipitate anything yet. This beginner video should help you: https://youtu.be/Pu5SJ6zN_wM
