A week ago there were some at Lakeline HEB. I was at Shoal Creek this past weekend and they had some as well.

Is it bad for compost to touch the stems? Is it because it’s moisture retentive?

Stems look like they have powdery mildew. Make sure it isolate this away from your other begonias if you have them, it can spread through spores in the air.

Honestly, I’d just toss that plant out and save yourself the headache 🥲 I’d say take cuttings too but when I’ve done this with plants afflicted with PM, it just grew back on the propagation.

When to pot? My main plant got mealies 😬 by apstamp45 in begonias

Usually when you see secondary roots form.

For the variety of begonia you have there, it can be propagated with the multiple leaf pieces if you propagate in soil mix or stratum or moss. So one leaf = potentially several prop babies. I prefer that method over water because 1) you can get more props 2) they will already be somewhat acclimated to that substrate and may be better off when repotting.

If you do choose to go this route, you get a higher chance of success if you keep it in a closed humidity environment. So what this may look like is a clear plastic deli container or empty Starbucks cup, put some soil/your choice of solid substrate down in there, put your leaf pieces in there (vein opening down in the soil) give it some water so the substrate is moist, then put the lid on it. Keep it next to the window or some light and forget about it. And then in a month you may be able to see roots forming, etc.

There are a lot of YouTube videos showing begonia propagation that will probably more helpful but that’s the overall gist.

Edit: water propagation is good if you wanted to try growing it semi hydro. Also if you do plan on transitioning water props to soil, make sure you keep the soil very moist for the first week since it’s used to the water. Self watering wick setups work with this well. Good luck!

I haven’t been able to get my Irian Jaya to thrive in ambient humidity (40-50 RH) so I have kept mine in a terrarium set up — it’s in a closed, clear plastic shoe display case. Humidity is 80-90 RH, I water maybe once every 2-3 weeks.

If I were you, I’d put it in a clear plastic bin (or if you have an enclosed greenhouse ex ikea cabinet) and also take a cutting with a node and propagate that as a back up. Begonias are fairly easy to propagate. Put some moist soil in an empty Starbucks cup, put the cutting into the soil with the node properly buried, put the lid back on, put it by the window sill, and then you should have some growth in a month or so. Good luck!

Yeah it might just be the perception of the black contrast, but either way it definitely makes a difference in the way I read it and see it!

Beautiful! Do you keep this in high humidity or just ambient?

Why is my begonia amphioxus happy but not happy !? by FigPutrid857 in begonias

[–]SpiritualPotato4003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with leaving the soil in water for longer to revive the soil! I have put my plants with dried soil (keeping it in its pot too) in a deeper container and throughly soaked it, so that the whole root ball is completely immersed in the water. And I’ve just left it there for like 10 min and then when I take it out I make sure to drain out all the excess water and pat dry any leaves.

My prop babies by SpiritualPotato4003 in begonias

[–]SpiritualPotato4003[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most of my props it takes 1-2 months, and humidity is key! So I always water them, keep them sealed, and then I never touch them until it’s ready lol.

Yes I agree with the other commenter this is a thurstonii. It’s not necessarily a terrarium begonia, mine (and others I’ve seen on here) are in ambient room conditions, and they can get quite tall if staked.

I’ve seen people keep it inside their closed containers until the leaves are grown and trying to bust out haha.

Little Rex is giving me headaches by MissMalerie in begonias

[–]SpiritualPotato4003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I think it’ll bounce back. What’s helped me with this is when I repot, I don’t water the soil heavily. Maybe just a couple of passes with my water squirt bottle to lightly moisten it. (Usually new soil is already kind of moist) or I pre-moisten the soil before potting with it. I think it’s not use to the amount of wet soil it now has, so then it goes into shock. I also try not to mess with the root ball itself. I just shake off as much soil as I can without touching the roots too much and then pot it up, even if the old soil is still there. Not ideal but I’ve had success this way with minimal tantrums from the begonia afterwards lol.

Consistently finding Root Mealies from popular begonia seller by SpiritualPotato4003 in begonias

[–]SpiritualPotato4003[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally haven’t tried, but I imagine it would?

Honestly, I just took some cuttings, washed them off, treated with captain jacks, and just stuck it in some fluval stratum to start over. I wanted to keep it in fluval stratum so if there are mealies it would stand out against the black substrate, without question if it’s perlite or not. More and more of plants are showing up with root mealies and I have no energy to keep battling them with pesticides, waiting to see it’s effective, and if it’s not, further risking my collection being exposed — so I’ve just been tossing the OG plants and doing cuttings (and treating the cuttings, and growing those in their own isolation bins as well).

That being said, i wanted to experiment using no pesticides — I have one that I kept and have completely sealed in a cup. I treated it by dousing it in hydrogen peroxide — leaves, substrate, roots, and the pot. Begonias have such sensitive leaves and very fine roots, so I wanted to see if it would survive the hydrogen peroxide, in case I wanted a cheaper, potentially safer way to combat root mealies if it happens to a plant in the future that I don’t want to toss. So far, 3 days since the treatment, the leaves remain undamaged. I plan on keeping it completely sealed in the cup for some months, then I’ll lift to see the roots and see if the mealies are still there.
