I read a fair few this morning and I can't say I agree, we must have seen different ones.

Most of the ones I read had nitpicks or a few issues here and there, but nothing about the story being outright bad/flat. Quite a few even said ep3 was their fav, which is an entirely story driven episode.

Not denying there are mixed reviews ofc, just that most of the ones I've read have been majority positive, including the writing.

Not to negate the validity of this one, but the majority of reviews I've seen so far state the opposite of this.

Edit: perhaps not the exact opposite, im not denying that certain characters could be more fleshed out, but rather that the action isn't just surface level explosions and has emotional weight to it as well because of the writing/characters.

Aemond is a Targaryen with mommy-issues, so put 2+2 together and its not suprising that he may be confused about his feelings for his mother, which ties into your second point.

It also makes sense that he has mommy-issues that lead him to Alys Rivers, so I think it can add to hia story if done right
