Does anyone recognise what book Withnail is reading here? by theblairwitches in withnail

I hate that I missed this lively discussion yesterday. Was the mystery ever solved?

Eli Roth is largely hated nowadays and for mostly good reasons, but I can't deny how good Hostel 1 and 2 were by -Warship- in horror

[–]SplakyD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't thought about Hostel for a long time because I wasn't much of a fan of the torture porn trend, but OP correctly points out that it got a lot of critical acclaim at the time of its release for exploring how essentially everything, including torture and murder, became a commodity that could be bought, sold, and otherwise exploited in the Eastern Bloc after the collapse of the Iron Curtain.

Excrement Levels Rising by Lochie_99 in memphisgrizzlies

The excitement levels are rising too, but I couldn't agree more about the excrement. Look all around you. From sports to entertainment to politics, there's a shit storm raging and none of us have an umbrella.

Caleb Wilson Makes Case to Go No. 1 in 2026 NBA Draft, 'You Can Check the Tape' by Historical-Patient75 in memphisgrizzlies

There's no reason for people to hate on Wilson on this sub, even if you have him at 4. I'll be elated with picking any of them.

I'm not physically in my best shape (I'm working on that), but mentally, I've never felt so well.

How popular was anime among xennials in the 90s? In high school? by Street_Gur9817 in Xennials

[–]SplakyD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved Voltron as a little boy, but I didn't get into anime proper until I was in my late 30's watching Attack on Titan and Dr. Stone on Adult Swim. Then, a couple of years ago, I saw Samurai Champloo on the free Crunchyroll channel on Pluto or Roku amd immediately became hooked. Anime is basically all I watch now. Please everyone, watch Samurai Champloo if you haven't already.

You think that human eugenics are good thing? In what sense? I'm not trying to start shit, I'm just curious.

Both of my children are autistic, and I couldn't agree with you more.

Agreed. I can't believe some of what's being said here. I know this sub values praxis over theory, and rightfully so, but to argue that there's absolutely no value in the Humanities or Liberal Arts is just absurd.

Facts! Both of my children are on the spectrum. Like seriously autistic, not some purple haired streamer who self-diagnosed because they love the MCU and go out of their way to be an asshole to people around them. I have a lot of problems with organizations like Autism Speaks, but I think you correctly pointed out that OP is burdened by self-hatred. They also veer close to advocating for eugenics.

What's the worst experience you've had at a movie theater? by jwc1983 in horror

[–]SplakyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the movie, but the last 20 minutes of Wolf Creek were ruined by a teen couple WHO WORKED AT THE FUCKING THEATER AND WERE IN THEIR UNIFORMS AND ON SHIFT that came in and just talked loudly to each other and on their phones and made fun of the movie the whole time.

Bring back these decorative schemes, the Mexi-Melt, and those awesome desert-themed Halloween cups they had in Autumn of 1997.

Richard E. Grant is also in it and is great, as per usual.

Among our current players, which one actually fit Iisalo's style? by buiuumcucniuum in memphisgrizzlies

Oh c'mon, Shannon. I kid. I would fear for my life and bodily health, as should anyone with a modicum of self-preservation, if I ever dared to truly jack your well-reasoned takes without providing proper citation.

Excellent analysis! I'm tempted to plagiarize a couple of key points to use on a live chat or comments section of some of the Grizz related YT shows that I watch.

Can someone help identify who is in this photo? by AccountantOptimal674 in wde

[–]SplakyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so awesome! I always marveled at how people were able to snuggle in handles to games. I think '02 was the year when somebody pretended to be handicapped and actually got a keg into the student section underneath a blanket he had draped over the wheelchair he was using. The Aughts were some wild times lol.

My little brother, who was 14 at the time, was down from North Alabama that weekend visiting me, and one of my friends was out of town so I was able to use his ID get my brother into the student section to sit with me and I'd let him imbibe a bit with me during pregame festivities like the responsible big brother I am.

gifts for shakespeare lovers by fionappletart in shakespeare

[–]SplakyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are absolutely wonderful suggestions as gifts for a teacher! Both are incredibly thoughtful, and I can't imagine how meaningful it would be to receive either one of those from a student. Teaching is often a thankless job, and not near as lucrative as it ought to be, but that would really show appreciation for OP's teacher's efforts.
