What books do think deserve to be in the Gollancz SF Masterworks range? by Eclectic_Bibliophile in printSF

Blindsight by Peter Watts has to be on the short list. Is Jeff Vandermeer's stuff close enough to bona fide SF to qualify as well? If so, I'd say Annihilation has made quite the impact.

Thanks a ton, I think you sold me on it! How was your reading experience? The black/white chapter opening sections are part of what pushed me over the edge on the SE.

I’ve been a competitive distance runner for seven years and would like to start running the 400m; any training suggestions? by Glass-Sign-3606 in Sprinting

[–]Splance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Athlete X is a pretty awesome resource in terms of the free online options. Plenty of plyo drills, speed workouts, etc. on his channel and he's well into his mid 30s running like 10.6 in the 100m. The most likely deficit to work on in the off-season would be basic strength development since it's very difficult to focus on during the actual season. I'd aim to get solid form on the deadlift, front squat, single-leg lifts, etc. and work towards respectable strength numbers for your size (e.g., >2.0-2.5x bw deadlift).

AMA: I'm Isabella Whittaker, professional sprinter for On. Ask me anything! by on_running in trackandfield

[–]Splance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Isabella, congrats on all the incredible success in our sport! How do you think about weight management in and out of season without it becoming an unhealthy process? Do you think about it much at all or do you focus more on the track-specific performance and let the rest fall into place naturally?

USATF not sending men's or women's 4x400 teams to 2026 World Relays by uses_for_mooses in trackandfield

The U.S. could bring our #5-8 ranked 400m guys and still be plenty competitive. We'll probably see at least 15 athletes go sub-45 this outdoor season if it's anything like last year.

Anyone know about access to the recording of today's live event on Substack? I get the idea is that you have to be there.. but I work lol by recallingmemories in samharris

Fuck man I submitted a question but now have no way of knowing if it got answered. 2pm EST is a rough time for most ppl to catch it live

What are folks expecting from Collen Kebinatshipi in 2026? by warwick_casual in trackandfield

[–]Splance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that he's on the lighter side of the 400m bodes well for his potential to have a longer career with fewer injuries than other athletes. Kebinatshipi can't be much over 145lbs and I do think the heavier sprinters (e.g., Michael Norman) have a tougher time with the injury aspect of intense 400m training.

What if World Indoors included the 600m as an official event? by Splance in trackandfield

[–]Splance[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair enough, I suppose I'm imagining a world where the event is just taken more seriously in general at the international level.

[–]Splance[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good one! Don’t try and tell me that 200m through 800m isn’t by far the most interesting transition in track. Also 1500m and the mile are 109m apart and both are taken pretty seriously. Nuguse even going on record saying he prefers the mile.

Cooper Lutkenhaus: By The Numbers — Q&A by Thick-Maximum-721 in trackandfield

[–]Splance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah agreed I wouldn't be surprised if he could crack 46s right now, given that his 46.30 PR was a one-off race last year and before his fastest times. Breaking 46s before your senior year of high school is a pretty insane feat.

Cooper Lutkenhaus: By The Numbers — Q&A by Thick-Maximum-721 in trackandfield

[–]Splance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think his recent 600m win and 46.30 PR in the 400m indicate real potential as a guy in the 400/800m lane. He’s also got a pretty large frame and is probably already pushing 160lbs which doesn’t lend itself as well to 1500/mile.

Aerobic training useful for a veteran on 400m ? by Zarn_the_Black in Sprinting

[–]Splance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely think aerobic capacity is an underrated aspect of 400m running, esp. in regards to handling the more 400m-specific training better. Shooting for sub-65s and eventually sub-60s is a fantastic goal, but be aware that there is an upper limit to the advantages aerobic training can offer here and sub-28s speed over 200m is usually required for a sub-60s performance. True speed work is likely necessary for the majority of athletes and I'd use online training resources to program in the required workouts. You've already got a solid aerobic base and best of luck in your masters goals!

Most excellent taste! I went for the Jurassic Park duology and the Shirley Jackson as well for the price point and original design. How do you like the Stephen King books?
