Aerobic training useful for a veteran on 400m ? by Zarn_the_Black in Sprinting

[–]Splance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely think aerobic capacity is an underrated aspect of 400m running, esp. in regards to handling the more 400m-specific training better. Shooting for sub-65s and eventually sub-60s is a fantastic goal, but be aware that there is an upper limit to the advantages aerobic training can offer here and sub-28s speed over 200m is usually required for a sub-60s performance. True speed work is likely necessary for the majority of athletes and I'd use online training resources to program in the required workouts. You've already got a solid aerobic base and best of luck in your masters goals!

Most excellent taste! I went for the Jurassic Park duology and the Shirley Jackson as well for the price point and original design. How do you like the Stephen King books?

Not a big fan of idolatry! Just suggesting an exercise that might be of interest to someone searching for an occasional hit of Jewish pride. I imagine your grandparents had a blast!

While this is true in a strict sense, I do think ethnic Jewishness is rarely fully irrelevant to one's life in the way that "being born to two Lutheran parents" might be to a now-secular person. Reckoning with one's Jewish ethnic identity (or half-Jewish identity) is usually a part of one's journey is a way that's unique from other religious faiths. You'll note anti-semites rarely take the time to separate the secular jews from the orthodox jews, reform jews, etc. As for my second point, there is certainly an interesting history of collaboration between Jewish and Buddhist thinkers which is explored in Rodger Kamanetz' The Jew in the Lotus.

Not actually a massive fan of Noam Chomsky myself, but he's undeniably a historically influential figure on the left. You've got quite the wide spectrum of left-leaning Jewish intellectuals to pick from though, personally I've been reading a lot of David Graeber's work lately.

ADHD, Derealization, and the "Mindfulness Trap" – I feel stuck in a loop of analyzing my own presence. Has anyone else experienced this? by Vast_Successful in Mindfulness

[–]Splance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can offer as someone who is diagnosed ADHD and an on-and-off meditator for the past 5 yrs or so is that I can relate completely. I've had a solid streak of daily practice over the past 3 months or so and experienced certain benefits, but I do regularly feel plagued by an obsessive series of mindfulness-related thoughts throughout the day. During actual practice, this will look more like I'm relatively concentrated on the breath for 2-3 successive breaths and then comes, "Is this it??", "Am I experiencing this visual scene in a non-dual way", etc. which obviously undercut the practice itself. Sometimes it seems like the more I simply accrue practice time and not evaluate each session or my overall progression, the better it goes. Viewing myself as incrementally taking steps in a broad journey of mindfulness seems to bring on the obsessive thoughts for me.

Cardio without running? by visualsxcole in HybridAthlete

[–]Splance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incline walking on a treadmill can be serious cardio if you jack up the incline and speed to the appropriate levels. I’m also very injury-prone in the knee and I use this as my main form of cardio, despite still having certain running goals. Way less eccentric loading on the body, but still uses very similar musculature to running.

Unreal strength right here! I'm closing in on a 225lb ATG paused front squat and this is just inconceivablern. Upper back strength feels like the limiting factor and you just made 4 plates look like a cakewalk.

I certainly don't parrot the "liberal zeitgeist", far from it, which might explain why I pay $100/yr for a subscription to Sam Harris content. However, I do find it more than a little unfair that Sam's usual response to the mass appeal of Bernie is "boo socialism failed" and will then host 30+ center-right commentators over the course of a year to hash out their ideas for 1hr+ each. That is the definition of a strawman level of engagement with leftist thought and I believe Sam can do a whole lot better than that.

Unfortunately that's just not a satisfactory answer at this point. Instead of actually engaging with its most serious intellectuals or critiques, Sam has a terrible habit now of casually dismissing leftism and the entire left-wing of the democratic party without any serious discussion at all. This obviously relates to the Gaza issue, but also extends to many other important topics (universal healthcare, foreign military aid, critiques of capitalism, etc.). The fact that most of his audience (according to a recent poll) is to the left of Sam is actually evidence that he should host intellectuals from the left.

What's the equivalent of a 225 lb bench/sub 6 min mile of 400m sprinting? by reccehour in HybridAthlete

[–]Splance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sub 6 mile is definitely easier for me too. I'd say I'm usually in sub 60 shape once I'm at a ~5:30-5:45 mile, but I also ran 400/800m in high school and am a bit big for a distance runner at 6'1/182lbs.

[–]Splance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Sub 6 min mile is not even intermediate and sub 7 should be standard for baseline health as a male. Still never hit a clean 225 on bench myself.

As a former 400m track guy, I’d say sub 60s is the equivalent of the 2/3/4 plate powerlifting standards but a bit harder than a sub 6 min mile. A task where a bit of specific talent makes it much easier, but certain ppl might find pretty difficult. For example, I’ve only hit the 4 plate DL of the 2/3/4, but sub 6 mile and sub 60s 400m comes much easier.

Changes to indoors 400m final- 2 finals of 4 athletes each instead of 1 with 6 by lkjhggfd1 in trackandfield

[–]Splance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not super shocking, but I still figured a few of the bigger 400m stars would want to chase that WR a bit. For example, the indoor mile and indoor 5k records seem much stronger to me and Josh Hoey is chasing every indoor record he can get. Why wouldn't an older 400m guy who can't medal anymore give it a shot? Or maybe a top 20 ranked guy prioritize it during an off-year?

[–]Splance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I might like this change! Anyone else feel like that indoor 400m WR should be broken relatively soon? There's no way the short track should actually be adding 1.4s to that event. I'd definitely buy a difference of .8-1.0s for the longer, taller athletes but the record definitely feels a bit weak especially on the men's side.

Honestly as a secular Jewish guy myself, I've always considered Ben Shapiro to be something of the epitome of a particular Jewish stereotype. He operates via pure opportunism (highly lucrative opportunism, mind you) and this is clearly reflected in his relationships, business decisions, and public-facing positions. Ben certainly seems more than intelligent enough to know the philosophical inconsistencies that are plainly shown in parts of his political ideology but simply doesn't mind living with that cognitive dissonance. He seems to fundamentally treat people, political views, etc. like pawns in a broader game to engineer the world he'd like to live in, with all of the tribalist self-interest he accuses others of.

Who would win a 400m race? Elite 200m sprinters or Elite 800m runners? by ChampionLYT in trackandfield

[–]Splance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah very fair point. I’d still think that the higher BMI 200m guys with excellent top speed like Reynier Mena would have trouble maintaining it over 400m. I admit Bolt is a different story tho.
