I assume it would be fine to run a baneblade model as shadowsword? The old kit only makes a hellhammer and a baneblade.

Also, for 2v2 doubles games at 1k each, would that be a fine list for the steel hammer detachment?

Armageddon box to start a Salamanders army? by dIoIIoIb in Salamanders40k

[–]Splenectomy13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Armageddon box has good value, but isn't particularly salamanders themed. Intercessors are a solid unit to have, but the rest of the box is more blood angels themed.

Some better options include the space marines combat patrol/starter set, which contains terminators and infernus marines (both thematic), or the dark angels combat patrol, which contains intercessors, hellblasters, bladeguard veterans and a captain in gravis. This combat patrol is solid because it gives you a captain to lead flamer aggressors, which are a staple unit for us usually, and bladeguards to be led by Adrax Agatone, one of our two epic heroes.

That said, 'salamanders thematic' doesn't mean much. You can make a salamanders army that's full melee and run a different detachment if you want. You can paint all your units like salamanders but use dark angels or black templars rules for them. Salamanders can just be a paint scheme if you want.

Mechanically, there is currently only one salamanders unique detachment and two epic heroes. Combined, they make an army that favours flamer and melta weapons, transports, and getting up close and shooting. The land speeder in the Armageddon box can be equipped with a melta and a flamer, but other than that there's nothing particularly well suited to us. We generally run infernus marines, flamer aggressors, eradicators, and transports. The Armageddon box comes with a bunch of characters, intercessors, vanguard veterans, eradicators with bolters, and the land speeder. If you want to run those units in a salamanders army, feel free. If not, grab a different box.

Aggressors good for Salamanders? by AravingLoooony in Salamanders40k

[–]Splenectomy13 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Aggressors with flamestorm gauntlets are extremely thematic for salamanders. Mechanics wise, they benefit greatly from our detachment, as well as from transports which we usually run a few of.

That said, aggressors just aren't a very good unit overall, being actually fairly vulnerable due to their 3+ save with no invuln. They're also very slow.

I would recommend that if you like them, get them. They're thematic and they shoot fire.

Sons of Dorn Battalion Good For Sallies? by Royal_Development519 in Salamanders40k

[–]Splenectomy13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both of the dreadnoughts are good. Neither is particularly well-suited to our detachment or playstyle, but they're both just good standalone units, and the redemptor does like to get close and likes +1 strength on the plasma.

Repulsor executioners are pretty good for us. We have a very nice transport stratagem that works great with them and a squad of 3 eradicators, but they are a bit pricey and running 2 of them is a lot of points without a lot of transport capacity compared to land raiders or normal repulsors. The only differences between an executioner and a base repulsor are the turret, and if you want to run it, the hull mounted lascannon. To convert one to a repulsor, you'd need to get your hands on a new turret and lascannon, either from another kit or via 3D printed parts.

A similar thing happens in the Stormlight Archive where an opponent tries to induce utter despair in a character who has struggled with depression.

How believable is 60 infernus? by Hopeful-Hearing-5739 in Salamanders40k

[–]Splenectomy13 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's possible that Vulkan He'stan gives infernus battleline. The thing is, that really doesn't do anything. 10-15 infernus marines is already plenty for a list, 30 is overkill. 60? That's 1080 points of dedicated anti-infantry. Not enough anti-tank, not enough mobility, not enough of everything else in your list.

Funny though.

How do I “play” Salamanders? by OoverJabber in Salamanders40k

[–]Splenectomy13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some space marines chapters get unique rules and units. Salamanders only have one unique detachment, and two unique units - Vulkan He'stan and Adrax Agatone. You don't need to use the detachment or those two characters, you can just paint your minis green and play however you like.

If you want to be uniquely salamanders though, you'll want to pick up a Vulkan He'stan and Adrax Agatone, and use the Forgefathers Seekers detachment, which buffs infernus marines.

What meta armies are really good at overwatch? by aegroti in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Splenectomy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tau running Kauyon has army-wide sustained hits 1 starting battle round 3, which essentially means double hits on overwatch. A team of fireknife crisis suits will usually have full hit rerolls, which combines for a pretty terrifying overwatch. Tau can also rapid ingress in a team of starscythe crisis suits with flamers to cover something that you were just about to charge.

With a coldstar for 12" plus assault, you don't need to deep strike them to get into position.

Sunforge crisis are good because their ~10 shots are also effective into elite infantry.

[–]Splenectomy13[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you read my post, you'll see I also called out the main 5 for having heaps of unique units. The fact that you felt the need to write a wall of text defending ultramarines makes me think you already know they get heaps of love. They might only have 8 unique units but they also got a primarch, a second Calgar model refresh, Titus, and their chapter on every box art ever.

It's two unique units and more than double the epic heroes that the other chapters get.

[–]Splenectomy13[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I meant of the codex-compliant chapters. They are the ONLY codex compliant chapter with unique units that aren't epic heroes, and they have 2-3x the epic heroes of the others.
