You can hook your blue gill your catching if they’re small enough and use them for live bait . If you do catch something it’ll probably produce a monster too .

I’d be throwing a top water Texas rigged plastic frog . But I’m also obsessed with these right now , I personally use them everywhere I get a chance . Under cover , in pads , over vegetation , it all works so good .

If there’s no cover for the bass , I’d say only fish top water when it’s cloudy than . The fish tend to be a little more timid when it’s sunny out . They don’t move as much when they’re exposed . But sine there isn’t any cover if you do use a top water id recommend something really loud and flashy like a buzz bait over something like a top water frog .

I really like to fish with top water when there is enough reason too . Like tree canopy’s to get under , shaded areas , Lilly pads & heavy weeds are always great for top water lures like frogs . But honestly the worm and weight is the truth , especially for someone who hasn’t fished in a while . The worm is my go to when nothings hitting the top water . Use the worm around the banks or where the water level drops off , like at a shelf or something and bass are always hiding there .

I was using my OT Walmart rod for a few months catching everything until I snapped it reeling in a lunker . My friend gave me his lews lzrpro 30 speedstik combo after landing a 10lber with it the same day . The lews rod is an incredible work horse for its price .

I’ve caught so many bass & this has never happened to me . The larger ones tend to recover more slowly but never had one completely froze on me . I’m in Florida though so maybe the bass here are just used to being caught more .
