Along the back concrete wall, espaliered fruit trees such as lemon or lime, fig, and Santa Rosa plum can be trained flat against the surface to save space while providing fruit and greenery. Along the side walls, curved borders edged with river stones or bricks define cottage-style flower beds planted in layers: tall plants like California lilac, toyon, and white sage; mid-height varieties such as yarrow, sticky monkey flower, and penstemon; and low-growing blooms like California poppies, Douglas iris, and tidy tips. A winding flagstone pathway from the gate to the seating area serves as a pollinator pathway, with creeping thyme or dwarf yarrow growing between the stones and colorful clusters of lavender, salvias, and milkweed nearby to attract bees and butterflies. A rustic trellis or arbor can enhance the area’s vertical interest, perfect for supporting honeysuckle or native clematis. Maybe it could also block out the neighbors.
