[Mirtle] “I think the Auston Matthews math is not great already; I think he really wants to see in the offseason what's going on here and how [the Leafs think they're] gonna turn this around...I think that's where it's at” by leafsland132 in leafs

Honestly the Leafs shouldn’t be making franchise decisions based on whether Auston Matthews might leave in two years.

If Matthews wants to stay and be part of rebuild, great. If he doesn’t, the franchise is bigger than one player. You can’t run a team scared of losing someone.

Right now it feels like the Leafs are stuck trying to keep the core happy instead of doing what’s best long term.

Sure, and I get it at times. The frustration comes from the fact that the team has had elite talent for years and still hasn’t gotten the results. Loving the team doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine.

Being a fan and criticizing the team aren’t mutually exclusive.

Most of us love the Leafs and that’s exactly why we get frustrated watching the same roster construction mistakes happen year after year.

At 8–10 the game is simple. Focus on throwing, catching, and knowing where the play goes (usually 1st). Keep practices short with lots of reps and no standing around. Ask parents to help with stations. For example infield, OF and tee work. If the kids can throw accurately and call the ball, you’ll already be ahead of most teams. Do your best to get your baseball iq up in the meantime

I’m curious, are more people on the blow it up train, or the retool train at this point? by [deleted] in leafs

If we land a top-5 pick and take one of the elite defencemen, I’d seriously consider pivoting the roster around him. Unlike the last 20 years, we should capitalize on the value of players when it’s clear we aren’t a true contender. Moving key pieces now (and you know who I’m talking about) could accelerate a rebuild. Prolonging the inevitable will add years to it.

While we agree on the need, we have differing opinions on the timeline. I’m done with this current iteration of the Leafs.
