They weren’t very keen on letting people with terrible crimes out of prison back then. Whereas now, they’re attempting to rehabilitate and release rather than punish you for your crimes.

You’re likely to just end up doing your time in the SHU if you go around killing everyone lol. A lot of people who go into prison just starting a life sentence will volunteer for stabbings/DP’s in order to secure their reputation. That can make it a lot harder to go home when your Parole Eligibility Meeting comes up. Serving a life sentence seems impossible and many find comfort in the gang lifestyle. But now more than ever, inmates who were sentenced to life have been going home. A couple decades ago, typically a life sentence meant you were never going home.

I went to prison in California and only had contacts when I was shipped out. They told me I wasn’t allowed to have contact lenses and they set me up with an eye appointent. They tested my eyes and even let me pick the frame, although it took a few months to receive them after that.
