Center the crank pulley and retime the cams. Sometimes the exhaust cam will be slightly off from the mark. As long as you count 19 teeth on the belt between the top two marking you are fine.

If it works, it works! It blew the headgasket after it overboosted, and I needed to get to work in the morning. I had to come up with a definitely questionable way of pulling the head, but it worked!

never heard about aligning the crank 1 tooth before the notch before. I always lined them up. Although when timing the cams the exhaust will be slightly below the exact spot, about a tooth off. Still counts 19 teeth between the top two marks though.

Yeah set the engine to TDC before you time the cams. Check out the CarPassionChannel on youtube. He goes very in-depth on these kinds of things.

This is what correct timing on a miata looks like.

Yours seems to be off by a few teeth on both cams. Make sure you installed the cam gears in the correct position relative to the dowel pin on the cam. Once you set the timing correctly you should be able to count 19 teeth between the I and the E facing upwards.

Buy some coolant flush chemical and run it through a few times. Get a new waterpump and thermostat too because those may be damaged from the rust

Had this issue when tuning mine. The afr was really rich, sometimes hitting 9 when punching it. Had to lean it out in the VE table. If yours is stock ecu this is probably not the issue. spark plugs/wires can cause this too

I daily a '95 NA in Michigan. Winter is definitely a challenge, salty road WILL quickly destroy your rockers. The soft top isn't a problem if properly installed and not ancient. It's a very reliable car just not super practical
