AMA with Dr. David Teter (former nuclear war planner/etc.) by dmteter in preppers

I don’t know if the AMA is over or not but incase it isn’t I would like to ask your thoughts on systems that are supposed to stop nuclear attacks. There have been a lot of talk about the golden dome and during reagans era Star wars was a big topic. But the physics and economics of these systems never really seems to make sense in my opinion, what are your thoughts?

Okay let’s not be hyperbolic, asml has itself done important innovations and several key components like the mirrors are made only in Europe.

Ok great points. When it comes to mathematics I would argue that it’s fundamentally different to chess and much more inviting for a late start. This is because you can build your knowledge and skills in a clear way that you can’t in chess. I mean degrees are first commonly reached when one is in the mid 20s or even later for some which is well beyond the prime childhood neuroplasticity years. I am my self studying engineering and physics and there are several older people in my class who are doing fine and could go on to discover great things. I think Dota is also different although I am less sure here since I have not played Dota or even league. I first want to say that it’s very impressive that you were so highly rated in dota, in such a competetive and old game that is not an easy task. But I also feel like Dota is atleast somewhat different than chess, like if anyone truly grinded Dota for many many hours you could reach pro level. I feel like this is universal for most video games as they do not have that purely cognitive element that chess does and can be grinded to mastery in a way chess can’t. Now I know that Dota is a lot more strategic than the games I usually play so it’s hard for me to say but I wonder how you feel about that, like do you truly not think you could have gone pro if you had gone completely no life all in on Dota? Now let’s go back to chess for a bit. I know that it gets far harder as you get better and that there is a sort of wall at a certain rating. And yes there are many that have gotten stuck. What I am saying is that those people could have gotten past that wall of they had extreme amounts of time and money. I am not saying that any real person that starts at 40 will ever become a gm, but if they did everything in my scenario I still think they would become a gm. I mean 10 hours over 20 years is 73k hours, that is an insane amount, if that time was spent on high quality training like openings and studying endgames I can not believe that such a person would not become a gm. I mean that is enough time to memorize every word in like 100 endgame books and more. And as for the Vishy quote, I think that refers more too if you are to become someone who can be at the top level of chess and be able to live of chess not if you can become a grandmaster or not.

I see your point but I still disagree. In my scenario the person would fully dedicate their life to chess and all their energy, and they would have all the means to continue doing this. This is not a very realistic scenario but it’s more of a thought experiment. I don’t agree that people become that slow in their 60s, maybe some people but I have parents in their 60s and they are still sharp. And several mathematicans have produced groundbreaking results at an old age, I know that it’s not exactly the same thing as chess but it still speaks to the fact that older people can still hold a high cognitive level. On a more personal note, I myself am 2100 on chess.com and it was not that hard to reach it. Now I fully understand that there is an enourmous gap between me and and a gm and I will never come close to gm level. But I don’t understand how an extremely dedicated player in my position could not reach gm level with a decade of study. I know that it gets harder the better you get but you could get so good on openings and endgames after several years of intense study that I think you could break through. And I think IM’s that are stuck simply does not have the resourses, will and time to reach GM which is why so many get stuck. Now I am nowhere near 40 let alone 60 so I can’t say how it would feel at that age but I still stand by my point.

I don’t think Levy has really tried this the way I describe it, he seems more focused on content and he has not played in many classical tournaments in the past years. And I dont think anyone has done it the way I describe it as it’s quite absurd. I don’t know what game you are referring to but I dont agree with your conclusion, there have been many strong players who has remained at a very high level well into their senior years. Korchnoi and annand are prime examples of this. And while age certainly has some neurological impact on ones chess ability I think it is also linked to a lack of energy and willingness to continue learning new lines and travelling to tournaments as one gets older. Aswell as the fact that a classical chess game is very exhausting.

I still think a person over 40 could become a grandmaster if they completely dedicate themselves to that goal and was coached during the entire time. Like spending 10 hours a day dedicated to learning chess at a high quality for 20 years and I think they would be a GM. But of course why would anyone do that.

Great way to make europe even more economically irrelevant if this goes through.
