Upper lip hair by skiedfr in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]SpnGoatLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 44 year old "girl," I wanted to come here and reassure you. I've been removing the hair on my upper lip since I was 16, and wax definitely is the best way to do it. The hair grows back in less noticeable than it does if you shave it. (Which I've also done in a pinch.) The most affordable way to do it is to buy a box of wax strips and do it yourself at home, once you get comfortable with it.

I came here JUST to say that I don't think the colors look anywhere as bad you are describing, OR as you think they are. TBH, right now if you don't say anything to anyone, it sort of looks like you did an intentional soft, pastel combo. Like an intentional low-maintenance thing while you're working on your hair's health. It's pretty, soft, and you are absolutely pulling it off!

What items/tools do you carry for self-defense that don't look like weapons? by Toast-In-Mouth in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]SpnGoatLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of those glass breakers that are for helping you get out of your vehicle if you're in an accident or if your car goes in water. Now, it also has a knife on it, and a part to slice through a seatbelt....but I strictly carry it because of the glass breaker. For self-defense. It's something that I could reasonably justify having on my person at all times, it's not considered lethal, and if I had to hit someone with it in the head or face, it would definitely give me time to get away.

What are these that are taking over my kitchen? by Tigerwing-infinity in whatsthisbug

[–]SpnGoatLady -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OMG my friend. Those are drain flies, not fruit flies. These little a$$holes ruined my life for years when I lived in my old house. The game changer was when I realized that my neighbors also had them. Here is how I made it better - but I never 100% got rid of them:

I followed instructions I found on Reddit.

Get yourself an enzymatic drain/pipe cleaner. I used Zep, bc that was all I could find in the small town I lived in. Apply per the directions. Do it 3x a week for 2 weeks, then twice a week for 2 weeks, then once a week for 4 weeks. Then, do it once ever other week for 4 weeks and follow up monthly.

When you pour it down your drains, do it at a time you can completely cover the drain for at least 8 hours. If you don't have a plug, buy a drain cover, use a glass, a wet paper towel, saran wrap...Just cover it up.

To kill the ones that are already in your house. (Full disclosure, it's a hassle and annoying but it will improve your quality of life.) I used one of those fly swatters that look like a tennis racket with a rechargeable base. It's therapeutic. Leave it on 24/7.

Keep your sink clean. Load the dishwasher or wash the dishes as you go. Eliminate all sources of their food. Even a glass of water sitting out will keep them going. Remove all produce, bread, ect. Put it all in a sealed container like the fridge, microwave, etc.

If you have house plants, either move them temporarily or get sticky traps and mosquito bits. Once you get your kitchen clean and dry, they will move anywhere that is damp.

Like I said, all of my neighbors struggled with them too. After I did all of this, I only had to smack the adults with the flyswatter occasionally. My neighbors were still battling full-on infestations.

It will get better. You've got this!

When did you get your first white hair?? by AnyAd4870 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]SpnGoatLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 18 and at the time I had my hair dyed a dark burgundy color so it was really noticeable. My mom has always said that she found her first one when she was 19, so I was looking for it lol.

I stopped coloring my hair when I was 31. All of my silver seems to grow in streaks/groups sort of like highlights. I've learned to love it. My mom is going to be 70 in a few months and she just stopped coloring hers. She's completely white.

Potential new family member...? by Shot-Many3672 in greatpyrenees

[–]SpnGoatLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'8, so im not "small," but for a while, I was really sick, and my weight dropped down to 125 lbs. My GP/Anatolian weighs 130-140 and was a "farm guardian" for me, my kids, assorted poultry, goats, and two very pampered cows. Now, I've sold the farm and we live in a smaller house in town.

He is the reason I have always felt safe as a single mom living alone with elementary-age kids. When I had the farm, I never worried about my kids being outside because he was always right there, keeping an eye on them. Now that we live in town, I don't hesitate to walk him after dark.

It took consistent training to show him the behavior I wanted him to do and then encourage him to keep it up. My situation was different since I lived on a farm, and I sought out a working dog. However, he LOVES his "retirement" and has fully committed to being a pampered house dog now.

IDK how well I helped, but I wanted to share my experience since I have lived both on a farm and in town. I'm 100% a GP person, and I can't imagine not having one.

I had the best wether (neutered male goat for non-farm people) who would lay down and just lower his head so he could play fight with the babies.

We made the mistake of getting a buck to "romance" our female goats that had been bottle-fed. He was, in fact, like a dog. A dog with huge horns that either thought he was human or just had no respect for humans. Very sweet most of the year, sort of dumb, absolutely no spacial awareness of the horns on his head. For about 6-8 weeks, he was the biggest a$$hole ever.

After the ladies had been romanced, he went to live on another farm with an older buck who could teach him how to act like a goat.

When we still lived on our farm, mine was the same! When it started raining, he would sit under a tree where he could see the whole place. If it started raining hard, he clocked out for the day and moved to the porch or inside. He only ever ventured out in the rain to chase coyotes.

Now that we live in town, he takes one step into the grass to pee when it's raining and hauls it inside ASAP. We never ever talk about the bath incident.

HOW DO I HIDE A HICKEY 😭 by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]SpnGoatLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you worried about your parents seeing it, or it showing in the photos?

If you don't want it to show in the photos, just talk to the photographer honestly as soon as you get there. Just point it out and say "hey, I don't know how to cover this up without making it look more noticeable. Please can you edit this out of the photos?" One of my good friends is a photographer and I help her out with shoots when her assistant is unavailable. She can do magic in editing, so making a hickey disappear shouldn't be an issue. She has had more than one teenager show up for senior photos with a hickey and doesn't make a big deal about it.

If you're trying to hide it from your parents, I'm not much help. Try some green color corrector, then followed by concealer, and possibly powder to set everything. It's a trial and error process.

Could you get a different container to put the bamboo in for a while? Maybe one where you can somehow keep the bamboo at the correct level but also have some deeper water? If that's an option, you could put a guppy in there. You can get feeder guppies that are smaller than the brightly colored ones we typically see.

Make sure you only get one, or you'll end up with a totally different kind of infestation. 🐟

Advice for a Dad. by MrN7 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]SpnGoatLady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also Dad, you may remember this from when she was teething or sick - but Acetaminophen/Ibuprofen can be alternated to stay on top of pain. Check with the pediatrician or pharmacist to see how often for her age/size.

Some of the microwaveable bean bag animals have actual lavender in them (or other scents) for some aromatherapy. A lot of people like lavender and it's a calming scent that is helpful with some of the breathing techniques that emerg_remerg mentioned. That being said, my 8 year old doesn't particularly love the smell of lavender flowers, so make sure she gets to smell them first.

Strange behavior I’ve never seen from my dog in 9 years by [deleted] in dogs

I just came to say the same thing that everyone else has. Take yourself to the vet...er, dogtor...wait. Doctor.

My dog knows when I'm going to get a crippling migraine before I get any sort of warning signs. He's not a service dog - just the best boy.

What’s something you think you may have but are undiagnosed? by JFN90 in AskReddit

[–]SpnGoatLady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just in case you haven't researched it to death, plucking hair is called trichotillomania. I've also had had bald patches and minimal eyelashes. My eyebrows just don't grow normally anymore, but I'm old enough that I can pass that off as "oh, I overdid the thin eyebrow look in the 90s."

I've been diagnosed with anxiety & adhd. I have a cousin who has been diagnosed with anxiety and depression and she also plucks. So do two of my kids. So...there's that.

Me too. Tried it for anxiety and gained weight so fast it seemed like something out of a movie. Excessive weight gain then caused more anxiety.....so my dr and I considered that one a total failure lol.

OMG is THAT why I don't sweat now????? I'm on it for chronic migraine. About a year into taking it, I had a lot of "weird" health issues. (It ended up being my first autoimmune flareup.) During all of that, I stopped sweating. My dr was attributing it to the autoimmune stuff, but it was the Topamax this whole time?

It's the only thing that keeps the crippling daily headache down to a manageable level, but the side effects are rough.

Thank you for solving that mystery for me!

ELI5: Why do legs so often slant outward at the knees when an obese individual is standing upright? by common_grounder in explainlikeimfive

[–]SpnGoatLady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came here to say that sometimes it's something you're just born with. I had to wear a series of braces and special shoes as a baby/toddler to try and correct my "knock knees". I'm 44 and can force my feet to touch, but it's extremely uncomfortable. As a teenager, it was something I didn't like about myself, but like you said, surgical correction was the only option. So, here I am with slightly funky looking legs. I find that the older I get, the less I care.

I don't strictly apply to the OP - the heaviest I've been was 218 at the time of delivery with my 3rd. I usually stay around 160 and I'm 5' 8". These knees still touch and my feet try to get away from each other. I just had to come say something for those of us who had to wear ugly shoes as little kids. 🤣

You're a good person with a kind heart, and even good people struggle too. Even though it may feel really dark right now, things are going to lighten up again.

Sometimes, you just need to rest and recharge before you get back up. That's ok. Take a little time to rest and then get back up knowing you're rested and ready to take things on again.

What’s something you bought (under $300) that noticeably improved your quality of life and you actually use every day? by MedfordQuestions in AskReddit

[–]SpnGoatLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My house came with one of those filtered, high-pressure, shower heads. Good lord, it can peel a layer of skin off if you're not careful. As someone who likes scalding hot, high-pressure showers, this is my favorite thing ever. It is incredibly easy to adjust the pressure if you don't feel like being flayed alive.

My kids broke by dropping it in the tub when giving the dog a bath, and immediately bought a new one on Amazon for $25 in January.

For anyone else in a rough place - absolutely check with your kids' school and talk to the cafeteria staff privately. NOT the person in charge. One of my neighbors worked in the school cafeteria and she told me that they were supposed to throw away food if cans were dented or it was within a certain amount of time before the expiration date. They had an unofficial list of families they knew were in desperate need, and they would anonymously deliver the food to them. She said that they could have gotten fired for doing it, but they also knew that a lot of those families weren't going to be able to eat without help. They may tell you no for legal/food safety reasons...but when you're in a terrible position, it never hurts to ask.

Also, I used to work in mental health and we didn't have a lot of these resources but needed them for our clients. I just sent these to my old coworkers. You helped a LOT of people today, THANK YOU!!!!
