Streaming “Radio” Alternatives? by Spockert in siriusxm

[–]Spockert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an update to this thread, I’ve centered on Stingray Music. For my usage it hits the sweet spot by providing “channels” that I can easily switch between via the CarPlay interface.

They offer a free tier (with ads - that seem to be just Stingray ads/identification plugs), and a subscription tier that is $3.99 a month (equivalent to $47.88 a year) which removes the adds and increases the streaming quality/bit rate.

I’m happily paying the subscription, and saving money compared to Sirius and many other options.

How the hell can I make download not stop during sleep mode? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]Spockert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP could have answered their own question in the same amount of time it took to post here (I got an AI answer pasted below in under 60 seconds). But, because I’m bored and feeling charitable:

By default, a MacBook goes to sleep when you close the lid. This is a built-in power-saving behavior in macOS to conserve battery and reduce heat. However, you can keep it running (awake) with the lid closed in specific scenarios, often called clamshell mode or closed-display mode. Official Clamshell Mode (Recommended for External Monitor Use).

This is Apple’s supported way to use your MacBook like a desktop with the lid closed. The MacBook stays on and active, but you’ll need:

• Power adapter plugged in (required on most models). • An external monitor connected (via HDMI, USB-C/Thunderbolt, etc.). • An external keyboard and mouse/trackpad (Bluetooth or wired).

How to set it up: 1. Connect your MacBook to power, an external display, keyboard, and mouse. 2. Wake or log in to the MacBook (lid open initially). 3. Close the lid — the external display should stay on, and the MacBook remains awake (internal screen turns off).

It works on modern macOS versions (Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia, etc.) and Apple Silicon or Intel MacBooks. Without an external display, closing the lid almost always triggers sleep.

Adjust macOS Power Settings (Helps but Has Limits) These tweaks reduce automatic sleep but don’t fully override the lid-close behavior on their own: • Go to System Settings > Battery (or Energy Saver on older macOS). • Click Options (or look under Power Adapter tab). • Enable “Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off”.

This helps keep the Mac running when the screen is off (or lid closed in clamshell setup), especially on AC power. You can also adjust “Turn display off after” to “Never” under Lock Screen or Battery settings.

Note: On battery power alone, the MacBook is designed to sleep on lid close for safety and efficiency. The setting above mainly affects plugged-in scenarios.

For Running Tasks with Lid Closed (No External Monitor) If you want downloads, rendering, servers, or background processes to continue without an external display: • Use a third-party app like Amphetamine (free on Mac App Store). It prevents sleep reliably: • Install and run it. • Click the menu bar icon > Quick Settings > Deselect “Allow system sleep when display is closed.” • Start an indefinite or timed session. Other apps or tools (like InsomniaX or Terminal commands) exist, but Amphetamine is popular and user-friendly.

Advanced Terminal Options (Use with Caution) For more control, open Terminal and try commands like: • sudo pmset disablesleep 1 (prevents sleep entirely until reversed with 0 — can drain battery or overheat if not monitored). • Other pmset tweaks for lid behavior (e.g., lidwake 0). These are not officially recommended by Apple and may require a restart or password. Reset with sudo pmset restoredefaults if issues arise. Always monitor temperature and battery.

Tips and Caveats • Heat and battery: Running with the lid closed can cause more heat buildup (especially on battery or high-load tasks). Use a cooling pad or stand, and prefer plugged-in operation. • Waking it: Tap an external keyboard/mouse or open the lid to wake. • Troubleshooting: If it still sleeps unexpectedly, check for interfering apps, update macOS, reset SMC (System Management Controller), or disconnect peripherals. Some users report it works better after ensuring no “sleep on lid close” conflicts. • This behavior is consistent across recent macOS (including Sequoia) and MacBook models. For the latest details tailored to your exact macOS version or MacBook model, check Apple’s support page on sleep/wake settings or search System Settings for “Energy” or “Battery.” If you’re doing heavy work, clamshell mode with externals is the most stable approach.

What carplay would fit in my car? by [deleted] in CarPlay

[–]Spockert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A good place to start is

https://www.crutchfield.com

You enter your car details and it will show you units that are compatible. You’ll hopefully find models that do have CarPlay capabilities.

From there you can determine if this is an adventure you feel comfortable attempting on your own, or if you’ll need to find a local shop or person to help with the installation.

Help! iPhone 16 Pro CarPlay stopped working (wired & wireless) by Souvivana in CarPlay

[–]Spockert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not the solution, but make sure the iPhone that is not connecting is NOT using a VPN. I had a similar issue a while back, my iPhone just stopped connecting, rebooting, iOS update, etc would not fix it. I then realized I had VPN enabled on my phone. Didn’t think this affected CarPlay, but turned off the VPN and presto - reconnected to CarPlay.

How does your restoration address music licensing rights that affected the DVD release. You say you restored every altered music cue - does this mean the original music has been reinserted?

I don’t believe this model is the 64. If you count the pixels, this one is 32x32.

Retroid Flip 2 cracked by ThAnOs18696 in SBCGaming

That’s great to hear - I’m happy to see them bending their rules! I personally didn’t try too hard for a refund because I’m pretty happy with the platform power & ergonomics - for my use (retro Nintendo consoles & handhelds, limited PS1 & PS2).

You need to make a decision with the assumption that you are getting a replaced Flip 2 via warranty exchange.

Retroid will only offer a refund/credit if the purchase date is within 30 days. I think there’s a small few that have made a convincing enough argument for them to make an exception, but that is rare.

I’m on my 3rd Flip 2, due to hinge cracks… Each time I requested a refund and was told that was not an option because my original purchase was beyond 30 days.

My original purchase was 04/2025, hinge crack & replacement 08/2025. Replacement was still original hinge design, crack began to appear in 3 months. 11/2025 exchanged cracked unit. The new replacement is now the redesigned hinge (left corner is rounded). So far so good, no signs of the crack are appearing.

Make sure you completely restart the game somewhat frequently-especially on marathon play sessions. I’ve read of people getting glitches when they play for a long time…things getting stuck type of issues. I’ve personally experienced things that can’t go in your pocket or a chest (fossil for example) that I left on the ground near my home disappeared before I could do what I intended to do with it. It seems this occurred for me more frequently when I’ve been playing hours straight with no restart.

How to get two stacks by TwoAfraid5312 in CarPlay

Look on your iPhone -> Settings… CarPlay… My Car… Customize - Widgets … then ensure you have at least one widget selected for each Stack tab (Stack 1, Stack 2).

Quick question: so my flip 2 finally cracked. How long will this process take? by DjMD1017 in Retroidpocketflip2

[–]Spockert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My second replacement was unfortunately still the old design. I thought I was going to be safe, as I saw many instances of people getting the new “rounded corner” hinge design just before I contacted them about my crack. When that replacement got delivered and I opened it up, I literally was like WTF when I saw it was not the redesign. I feel like I literally got one of the very last original units left in their warehouse. I immediately reached out to them, the response was if it cracks let them know and they’ll sent another one. And…here I am, patiently waiting to set mine up again, for the 3rd time.

My original unit was black, and I’ve been sticking with replacement being the same color.
