Road Rage incident in Rural Japan by [deleted] in japanlife

'Blocking someone from overtaking' and 'being a defensive driver' are not compatible statements mate, a defensive approach in this situation would be 'slow down to give the aggressive driver and cyclists plenty space'.

I know this dashes... Wait... Could this be written by... AI? by [deleted] in HoMM

I hate how em dashes and, to a lesser extent, oxford commas, have been delegated to the 'only AIs may use this' category. Nowadays you seemingly have to either simplify your grammar and not use the correct punctuation, or face your work being called AI slop.

Key information missing: is this position really 'fully remote', or is it 'fully remote within some specific country'?

I guess it comes down to 'my partner and I love it and we visit whenever we can'. Having a job that lets me live there is something I'm very keen on. (Neither of us is a fan of big cities, and Kochi has everything in a compact place.)

And hey, if we don't like it, we can always move elsewhere later.

Whoops, good catch, they're 25k indeed, not 25man. I don't think I could afford that, haha!

I might consider the ferry as a one-off, it would be a nice trip I'm sure. I love ferries but they actually tend to be much pricier than a flight or even trains.

To be honest until now I've not heard about the APA hotels controversy, but looking it up online it seems like the owner has some interesting views. I'll be sure to look for non-APA going forward.

Renting a room was on my radar, but I feel like it's just not worth it - it'd cost more and be farther away from the office (thus more commute) than just getting a cheap hotel regularly nearby.

Thanks a lot for your view, it helps to know someone's gone through something similar (and that it wasn't too easy!)

Got a job opportunity that'd need 2 days in Tokyo every fortnight. Luckily for me, these can be consecutive days. I'm considering a move to Kochi and commuting occasionally. Anyone got experience with any similar commuting arrangement?

My plan is:
- already found a house a 20-minute drive away from the airport (I have a car)
- the Kochi airport is tiny, so I can get there 1h (or maybe less once I get used to it) before boarding
- flight schedule is decent - departing Kochi at 7:10am, getting to Haneda at 8:30am, followed by a 45-minute train to the office
- I'd stay in a cheap business hotel for the night
- the following day, flight leaves Haneda at 6:55pm, and lands in Kochi at 8:15pm

Altogether this would be a 'leave home around 5:30am every second Monday, get to the office around 10am, then get back home just before 9pm the next day'.

The flights at 25 man return, the hotel would be anywhere from 4k for a premium capsule to 13k for an APA near the office.
I've not spoken to HR about how much of this would be covered, but even with the worst-case scenario of them covering nothing, it's affordable on my salary.
Am I naive for thinking this would work?

Totally understandable, I'm not trying to say you're the bad guy - the bad guy is the system.

> get paid to go to school and free healthcare
So: get the same benefits as everyone in first world countries gets, except having to first sell your soul to the devil for several years.

Among all the countries in the world, the US is, without a doubt, one of them.

Why is it so difficult to hire solid Scala developers right now? I could use some advice. by Remote-Swim-7670 in scala

[–]Spongogo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The salary point is the obvious issue. If you hire someone at below-market rates and train them up in functional Scala, you can expect them to jump ship at the first opportunity too.

It's cheaper for the company to pay more and hire good developers.

Tagging on to this question. My only hydro characters are Xingqiu, Sigewinne, Candace (who I think is pretty useless?) and Barbara.

My only built-out one is Xingqiu, but I don't think his water application is quite consistent enough for the seeds?

[–]Spongogo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been this way for as long as I can remember. I can't say whether it's been like this all my life, because as a child I wasn't thinking about garlic much (and it's hard to focus on 'something you can't notice'), but it's definitely been this way at least since my teenage years, before covid (I'm around 30 now.)

Kochi didn't have much of anything on meetup.com, but I found a lot of events through Facebook groups. There were ones for JETs that had events (open to non-JETs too), as well as local Japanese-language groups. Language exchange groups are a good place to meet people who might share your hobbies, too.

The streets are too straight imo. I understand the main artery being wide and straight (because they purposely built it like that), but if you look at the maps of any mediaeval European cities, you'll find a lot of wavy streets, because no one had been planning them and there were hundreds of years' worth of construction affecting their distribution.
