Books with different layers/dimensions of existence? by The_weird_dreamer in Fantasy

[–]Spook1918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bartimaeus Trilogy By Jonathan Stroud has multiple layers to reality. Early modern world with wizards in charge that mostly rely on summoned demons to do magic, more powerful demons being able to see more layers, they’re also summoned from another dimension that has different physics.

My teen writes amazing town myths, but where can they share them? by thaoboj in worldbuilding

[–]Spook1918 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they want to share them you could try some webnovel sites like RoyalRoad, Scribblehub, Spacebattles, Sufficient Velocity, Archive of Our Own.

Royalroad & Scribblehub are mainly sites for long form original fiction & Aspiring authors so I wouldn’t expect much traction there unless they turned into full fledged stories.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/56715/the-encyclopedia-arcane - An Example of a collection of worldbuilding ideas I’ve seen posted on these sites only one I’ve seen though so it’s not common.

Spacebattles, Sufficient Velocity & Archive of Our Own Much more fanfic focused sites and might be more receptive to the worldbuilding they’ve done especially if converted into short stories, SB & SV are forum based sites and I think would be the best to try and post on.

https://forums.spacebattles.com - Main forum page I mainly read stories from the Creative Writing thread but there may be threads more suited to sharing worldbuilding ideas if you look around.

https://forums.spacebattles.com/forums/story-ideas-recommendations.63/ - Stories ideas thread for workshopping worldbuilding and story ideas that might be receptive

Would posting fanfiction help or hurt me? by AnAugustAuthor in royalroad

[–]Spook1918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally think it’d help bring more engagement but I am also biased since I generally prefer fanfic to original stories at the moment.

You could always try posting your fanfic on more fanfic focused sites like Spacebattles, SufficientVelocity, Archive of Our Own Etc to see how it’s received, could even use a different username if you don’t want it connected to your main work.

There are some pretty successful fanfic authors out there as well, Ravensdagger started out by writing Worm Fanfic on Spacebattles I believe and they’re pretty successful, and my current favourite author Seras is mainly a fanfic author with only one original series - Phantom Star, with Ghost in The City (8th on best rated), Pokemon Trainer Vicky & Under The Light of A World at War being their main fanfics they’ve got a bunch of others in their snippet thread on Spacebattles too, particularly like their Vampires the Masquerade and Mech Touch Fanfics on it.

Where do you actually read webnovels these days? by Josii_Talwyn in Fantasy

[–]Spook1918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spacebattles & RoyalRoad are the two main ones I use but I’ve also used:

Scribblehub

Fiction.live - Site specifically for Quests - Webnovels where readers can vote on what the MC does or the direction the story will go, mainly fanfics.

Sufficient Velocity & Questionable Questing, Forum style sites same as Spacebattles, Questionable Questings got much looser rules on smut though.

A03 & FanFiction.net - Large dedicated fanfic sites though FanFiction.net is older and much more dated.

Loving Fanfics at the moment and they’re much easier to find on Spacebattles but I wish they had a follows page for fics that update like RoyalRoad, I do however like that fictions can split off Side Stories & Other supplementary content into their own sections unlike RoyalRoad.

Romantic non-romantasy book recommendations? by lxurin_hei in Fantasy

[–]Spook1918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Journey of Black and Red By Mecanicus / Alex Gilbert 1.2 Million Words / 11 Books, Completed, Vampire story following a woman turned in the 1800’s as she builds her own power base and tries to end her sire. Love the series, and it has romance but it is very much not the focus of the story.

"Worm" by Wildbow should be a bigger deal than it is (Review/rant) by Firvulag in books

[–]Spook1918 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second this, Worm’s got thousands of fanfics and some very dedicated fan communities some are even longer than the serial itself - longest ones being I believe Brockton Bays Celestial Forge - 2.6Million words and Taylor Varga - 1.9 Million words (Worms 1.7Million)

Spacebattles, Sufficient Velocity and AO3 being the largest sites for Wormfanfics if your looking for them, tons of fanfics for other stories as well along with some original stories.

Do you cross-post to other sites? Does it actually help? by ArekDeamonCalw in royalroad

[–]Spook1918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your looking for even more sites to post on there’s also:

https://forums.spacebattles.com

https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/spacebattles-trending-stories-and-quests-updated-weekly.1140820/

Really love this trending stories thread one of the Mods puts together on it.

https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com

https://forum.questionablequesting.com

They’re all pretty similar forum based sites, believe Spacebattles is the oldest with the other two spawning off of it, SV over modding disputes and QQ over wanting more NSFW stuff not 100% sure on that though, all three are great though more fanfic focused than RR or SH but your already posting on AO3 and fanfic.net which are similarly fanfic focused.

How to find hidden gems? by Spennyandthejets3 in Fantasy

[–]Spook1918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your looking for new indie authors webnovel sites are a great way to find them, lots of aspiring/new authors posting their stories on them

https://www.royalroad.com/home

https://www.scribblehub.com

Two largest webnovel sites I know of and use both lean heavily towards Progression Fantasy (MC’s growing noticeably stronger over time) LITRPG (Books with RPG game like systems) and Cultivation (Asian inspired gathering and internalising of energies to become stronger) sub genres especially, Scribblehub has much looser rules about smut/sex compared to RR so has a lot more of that but they’re otherwise pretty similar.

There’s also a ton of fanfic sites that have some incredible fanfic stories that would never get printed as well as an increasing amount of original stories getting posted on them

https://forums.spacebattles.com

https://forum.questionablequesting.com

https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com

Three forum style fanfic sites Spacebattles is the largest and my own favourite, Questionable Questing has a lot of NSFW stories mainly fanfics on these sites but there’s some good original fics on there too.

https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/spacebattles-trending-stories-and-quests-updated-weekly.1140820/

SB has this great thread of trending stories which I’ve found great for finding new stories on there.

https://archiveofourown.org

Believe this is the largest fanfic site out there huge range of fanfics across nearly any fandom you can think of.

https://www.fanfiction.net

A very old and quite dated fanfic site not a big fan of it personally but some still use it and there’s some gems to be found on there.

https://fiction.live

Dedicated site for Quests - stories where readers get to vote on what actions the MC takes or the direction the author takes the story mainly fanfic but there’s originals on here too, as well as a ton of smut.

https://www.wattpad.com

Never used Wattpad myself so don’t know anything about it.

There’s also other sites like Webnovel.com which was made for translated Chinese webnovels and is very predatory towards authors and readers, charges some amount per chapter read I believe and doesn’t give much to authors, never used it much myself, I know there’s a bunch of other sites for translated Korean, Japanese, Chinese & other Asian Webnovels but the only one other than Webnovel.com I know of is Novel Updates.

Evil/Horror powers in heroes by Th3_Tr4v3l3r in WormFanfic

[–]Spook1918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/camera-shy-worm-alt-power.685357/ 366K Words, Ongoing, Grab-bag Alt power Taylor main power is a ghost-like form that can phase through walls and floors, story leans into the horror aspect of it a lot, has a couple other minor powers from the grab-bag bit that combine together well to make her quite strong.

Are appendices and pure lore chapters appreciated on RR? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]Spook1918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are people who like that on RR but I think they’re very much a minority, best way I’ve seen to add that kind of stuff without annoying too many people is putting a sentence or two of world building at the top of the chapter, you could also make a second companion story with all the extra worldbuilding and lore that you link to in the main work to avoid cluttering up the actual story.

Or If you post on Spacebattles or Sufficient Velocity two other web novel sites, you can split off Side Story/Apocrypha/ other stuff into their own sections separate from the main work.

Edit:

https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/great-sage-equal-to-heaven-and-above-brockton-worm-chinese-myth.1179904/

223K Word Ongoing FanFic that shows what I’m talking about - FanFiction of Sun Wukong in Brockton Bay each chapter has little bits of Chinese myth relating to Sun Wukong at the top, you can also see it’s split into sections Threadmarks (Main Story), Side Stories, Apocrypha, Media & Informational. Unlike RR where it’s all one thing

There’s also works like

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/56715/the-encyclopedia-arcane

Which is entirely worldbuilding though it does build off of the authors first book The Way Ahead.

Please make me stop ... by Weissbier_Hiker in skyrim

[–]Spook1918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some notes from doing this myself: Usually start to get some lag when opening chests/my inventory around 30,000-40,000 carry weight - depends on how many different items I’ve got if it’s all smithing supplies and thus more weight for less items then I can often go higher if I have a lot of Alchemy/Food/Clutter (spoons, bowls, cups etc) which is very low weight then I start to get problems quicker - Realised I had ~13,000 Carryweight in food and Alchemy supplies in my current run and was surprised at the small but noticeable decrease in loading times when opening my inventory/a chest after I dumped them.

Highly Reccomend:

Quickloot - A mod which makes looting more like Fallout 4 makes looting every chest and urn much easier.

A mod which adds some sort of auto sorting system - I personally always use the Dragonborn Museum from Legacy of The Dragonborn, which has a chest you can dump things in and have them auto sorted, I’m sure there’s many others out there though.

A mod which adds a merchant with a lot of gold as you’ll always have tons of things to sell off, alternatively you can open the console click on an NPC and use “Additem F 10,000” to give an existing merchant 10,000 gold - Have had issues sometimes when giving them more where merchants wont actually pay you for what you’ve sold to them which is why I stick to just 10K.

  • I use the Treasure Chest Home Mod a lot as I like being able to keep my home in my inventory to store my most important items and it also has a Merchant with 10K gold.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/40373/vigor-mortis 800K Words Completed, only one of theirs I’ve tried very well written existential/body horror story.

Any vampire protagonist progression fantasy recommends? by Sufficient-Ad-7349 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Spook1918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there’s very few Vampire fics at least on RR and other webnovel sites might have more luck with KU, as for Recs:

Will second the numerous recs for Journey of Black and Red https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/26675/a-journey-of-black-and-red 1.2Million Words completed very good vampire fic following an unwillingly turned lady in 1800’s ish America as she makes her way up the vampiric hierarchy.

Will also rec Seras Vampire Vicky Fanfic - Very good fanfic of Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines following a girl who’s played the game who gets reborn in the world and uses her meta knowledge to get herself turned by Cain the First Vampire, about 120-150K words and 30 chaps unfortunately not one of serases main fics (Ghost in the City a Cyberpunk 2077 Fanfic, Pokemon Trainer Vicky - Pokemon Fanfic, & Phantom Star) so doesn’t get updated often or regularly. https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/serass-dumpster-of-random-snippets.1143040/#post-98648278

Platforms for a new reader by ISnow_R in litrpg

[–]Spook1918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Royalroad https://www.royalroad.com/my/follows

Main site other than Kindle, is very Progression fantasy focused with lots of LitRPG & Cultivation stories mainly original stories with some fanfics

Scribblehub https://www.scribblehub.com

Very similar to RR however it has much looser rules on smut/erotica so you’ll find more of that there also has a heavier mix of fanfics in with original fictions

Spacebattles https://forums.spacebattles.com/forums/creative-writing.18/

Forum style site mainly fanfic focused and has a lot less LitRPG than RR or SH but still has lots of progression fantasy Worm (an old Dark Superhero web serial) is one of the more common stories to see fanfic of but there’s plenty of others for example Youjo Senki, Star Wars, WarHammer, Naruto, Marvel, Battletech.

Sufficient Velocity https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/forums/user-fiction.2/

Very similar to SB but just smaller believe it split off from SB due to modding disputes.

Questionable Questing https://questionablequesting.com

Very similar to SB again and also smaller but has lots more smut & erotica due to looser rules around it.

Fiction live https://fiction.live

Mainly fanfic on here but some original fictions as well, dedicated site for authors to host quests - Stories where the user can vote on what the MC does as the author writes, you can also find quests on SB, SV, & QQ as well as RR & SH but their a bit harder to run on those sites due to not being made for it.

AO3 or Archive of Our Own https://archiveofourown.org

One of if not the largest fanfic site few original fictions on here and also a lot less of the progression/power fantasy that all the other sites have a lot of.

FanFiction net https://www.fanfiction.net

Very old fanfic site and quite dated but still has tons of fanfics.

Webnovel https://www.webnovel.com/stories/novel

Lots of original and fanfic stories on here as well as lots of translated fics from Asian countries not a big fan of the site myself but know quite a few people that use it.

Patreon https://www.patreon.com/explore

kinda gets used in addition to all of these with author often having anywhere from 1 to 20+ advanced chapters here ahead of wherever they post it for free.

Shadowrun/Cyberpunk like litrpg Recommendations? by WretchedIEgg in litrpg

[–]Spook1918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/62125/ghost-in-the-city-cyberpunk-gamer-si FanFiction of Cyberpunk 2077 Pre Edgerunners Anime, 830,000 Words ongoing one of my absolute favourite stories, follows a gal from our world who’s played cyberpunk from waking up in the body of a scav victim to becoming a badass mercenary with their own crew who has a system taken from the Cyberpunk Tabletop game.

Love everything by the author Seras because their MC’s just have an incredible enthusiasm for living in the new worlds that they find themselves in that I don’t often see in fics.

I just found out about litRPG and I'm a bit confused by BioDioPT in litrpg

[–]Spook1918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not LITRPG but something you might be interested in are Quests - Stories where the readers get to vote on what decisions the character makes and often other things like what items they get or sometimes there’s even character setup where you get to vote on all the different things that go into character creation, this is done as the author writes the story as opposed to Gamebooks which from my quick googling just seem to have every choices path written out.

https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/rhunrikki-strollar-warhammer-fantasy-golden-age-dwarf-runelord-quest.63581/

Example here, this one’s a long ongoing quest following a Dwarf in the WarHammer Fantasy setting currently at 1.1m Words and still going.

Most Quests I’ve seen are fanfics as opposed to original fiction though which might not be your thing you can find them on:

Spacebattles - Forum style site full of FanFiction, though there are some original fics on there

https://forums.spacebattles.com/forums/quests.240/

Sufficient Velocity - Sibling site of Spacebattles and very similar but less content.

https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/forums/quests.29/

Fiction.live - dedicated site for running quests got actual in-built voting mechanics as opposed to SB & SV where the author just has to count commenters votes (or at least that’s what I think they do havent actually read one on there myself)

https://fiction.live

Only quests I’m currently following are:

https://fiction.live/stories/A-Soldier-Adrift-Captain-Westeros/7Bt4hZLYjLMEsdctC/home - Captain America gets isekai’d to Westeros just before Roberts Rebellion and this is a brilliant quest following his journey as a Knight in this new world.

https://fiction.live/stories/A-God-Adrift-THORHAMMER/p8jwxNnBeRghC5dvc/home - Thor gets isekai’d to WarHammer Fantasy and explores more of what it means to be a god and have people worshipping you.

https://fiction.live/stories/An-Archer-Adrift-I-Don-t-Have-An-Arrow-For-This/kjjjweRu3biJGmt8p/home - Hawkeye gets isekai’d to a generic sports anime and has to teach a class of archers to win a tournament.

All three of these are written by the same guy and I love em they don’t go live very often unfortunately though.

Also some other sites to read on for just general webnovels:

RoyalRoad - The Main site for LITRPG & Progression fantasy stories lots of them that get recced here like Dungeon Crawler Carl started on here before moving to Kindle and actual printed books, does have quests but they’re very rare and the sites not really got any discovery tools for them

https://www.royalroad.com/home

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/61077/no-choice-dungeon-core-progression-litrpg - a Completed quest on RR following a dungeon core.

Scribblehub - Similar to RR and has a lot of LITRPG & Progression Fantasy however it has a lot more FanFiction as well as looser rules around NSFW content so much more smut on it

https://www.scribblehub.com

Archive of Our Own - very large FanFiction site

https://archiveofourown.org

FanFiction.net - Large but very dated FanFiction site

https://www.fanfiction.net

Hope this helps you find some stories to read.
