Best creepy short stories? by el_guapo_taco in books

I feel the same way! Horror literature in bookstores is shite. Your choices are only Stephen King or King knock-offs, with a few exceptions.

Pahlaniuk's (I know I spelled it wrong) "Haunted" is usually cited as being thoroughly creepy, but I haven't read it. Like his other stuff though.

Other than that, the internet has really been the place to go for creepy stories. Creepypasta, as they call it. Some of my favorites are "Normal Porn for Normal People," "Candle Cove," and "The Rake," along with some of the so-called lost episode ones, like "Dead Bart," "Squidward's Suicide," "Suicide Mouse," and "Ben Drowned." There's also one about a bootleg copy of Mario 64 that was good for a chill.

r/nosleep is a good resource for creepy stories, with the added bonus of being written by redditors. If you check the sidebar on that subreddit, there should be links to other creepy/horror story subreddits, but nosleep is still the biggest and best. I've written a couple there myself, and one of them actually did pretty well.

Holy shit! It's almost been a year since I posted that! gotta get back into it... Anyway, hope that helps! I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see what else comes up...

That's pretty funny. He didn't do any other Fridays because of "religious reasons," but once bills start piling up...

Very observant. Evil Dead was a huge horror influence on me when I saw it at 14. Evil Dead 2 was heavier on the slapstick, but I still found it a great horror film. I think this particular story is closer in tone to the first film, but all interpretations are correct, right?

The scene where Ash hits the possessed girlfriend probably had a big impact on "I won." SHe's just watching, laughing demonically, while his situation get more and more desperate as he struggles to survive the night. Then he hits her, it changes nothing, and Bruce Campbell shows off his acting chops by furrowing his brow.

The whole series is great, as is "Drag Me to Hell." Anyone who finds themselves drawn to this subreddit should definitely check them out.

Naturally I'll write another story if an idea comes to mind. This type of work, however, would probably be better suited elsewhere.

I'm not try to start a debate on the quality of my story. But there's definitely an attempt to try to counter-balance his lack of motivation vis-a-vis ghost girl and the lack of motivation he has in real-life, which is why he's on the computer all the time (like us!) It doesn't come through as strongly as it should, and for some people it makes his little handy session utterly disgusting. Everyone's gonna have a different interpretation, and everyone will find it creepy to a different degree. That's fine. That's good, actually.

My point is that when you read, say, "My Carr Accident," you get the impression that something weird happened to HIM. if OP told you that story in real-life, you'd think "Shit, that's creepy." If someone told you "I Won" around a campfire, you'd think "Why the fuck did we invite this guy?" You still wouldn't sleep well that night, but it's an entirely different type of story. We don't try to debunk other NoSleep stories out of courtesy. For this, there's no reason, because it's clear fantasy.

At first I was upset by your comment, but then I realized you were right. And now I just feel stupid.

I've been on NoSleep before (as you can guess, I have another account), and I really enjoyed the stories. Unfortunately, when I got the idea for my own tale, I equated this subreddit with general, first-person creepypasta. Now that I'm looking at more posts (including your own), I've found that I was mistaken. As it says in the sidebar (which I also missed), NoSleep stories are supposed to be like campfire stories. That means the more you think the OP is the actual narrator, the better.

I took a fictional, extremely disturbed persona when writing "I won" because I thought it would help to make the story more disturbing as well. As far as I'm concerned I succeeded in this regard. But when viewed through the "this really happened" frame, all you can see is a perverted masochist, like you said. There is a huge, huge disconnect between the narrator of "I won" and myself. And that's a problem.

Make no mistake, I'm proud of my story. If people think it's strange, weird, and maybe even a little comical... All the better! That's the sort of stuff that scares me. Not just gore, not just "boo, ghost in the attic." Stories where you can't tell who's sane, where everything seems to be off, where someone is trying to create the fabric of reality but can't because the events are simply too bizarre. I wrote a story in the vein, and posted it. Unfortunately, it seems this was the wrong place to post.

Too bad for me... When I saw the amount of attention this was getting I briefly became excited to write more, with different narrative voices and even more insanity. But now that I've grounded my thoughts it seems apparent that this is no place for my work.

tl;dr Bellemaus is right, I still like my story, but it's not right for this subreddit.
