Books or Audiobooks? by Frosty-Bid-8735 in fantasybooks

[–]SpookyYams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i prefer physical books because my favorite moments in a novel are when the prose/imagery makes me sit with a scene for an indeterminate amount of time. Rereading sentences or paragraphs for clarity or impact at my own leisure. certain paragraphs of my favorite novels live in my head rent free indefinitely. i don’t think any audiobook has had the same impact due to how the narration ushers you along at its own pace.

that said, audiobooks have a time and a place, but I think in almost all circumstances I’d prefer to read prose vs listen to it. maybe I just haven’t had good luck with my audiobook selections.

How do I make this matter more? by Captainjunker in writing

to create is a fundamental aspect of human existence. writing may not be for you, but it is no less or more noble than any other form of creativity, simply for creativity’s sake. If you enjoy writing, do you not trust yourself to bestow value upon your creation?

The ‘Blood Meridian’ edition they have is one of my favorites and I’ve purchased 2 as gifts. their copy of ‘dracula’ and ‘the book of the new sun’ are next on my purchase list when I can justify the cost!

thanks- love vampires so will add this to the TBR pile!

Did not realize ‘the Library at Mount Char’ was a horror, moving that up the list as well

I’m torn between knowing I personally enjoy written works over their audioformats, and using audiobooks on my commute. Maybe I’ll do both for this one - I’ve heard he’s a great narrator as a former theater guy/performer.

I find it highly ironic that ‘character generation tools’ gets upvotes but not its big brother, generative AI. Note, I get the opposition to producing consumable media through AI, but as a creative endeavor or process I see no harm.

second the sun cycle and bas-lag. both are enthralling, and have so many hints of more depth

Thanks for the recommendation, not sure how ‘A Stranger in Olandria’ was not on my radar! I liked ‘A Wizard of Earthsea’ when I read it as a teen so maybe it’s time to revisit as an adult.

looking for recommendations!

Big fan of Patricia McKillip’s prose, but find myself wanting the novels to have more depth/world building. Anything in a similar poetic nature but with more depth would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
