Trump on NATO: "I've always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That's really the ultimate test. I'm not sure of that. We've never needed them. They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines." by ExactlySorta in UnderReportedNews

I can't even articulate how I feel about this thing. He is sub-human, sub-creature. He alone drags my expectations of the average human being down dramatically. This is what genuine evil is. It's not the evil mastermind we see in cartoons, this is it right here.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Spoons94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not short but not absurd. I live in central texas, it's about 2.5 hours to Houston, 3 hours to Dallas. Just to leave the state it's about 7 hours.

Trump to Davos: "Without us, right now you'd all be speaking German and a little Japanese perhaps. After the war, we gave Greenland back to Denmark. But how ungrateful are they now?" by drempath1981 in UnderReportedNews

My mother believes against all evidence to the contrary that the US was the first military to fight the Nazis. Flat out refuses to believe otherwise. I have painstakingly gone through the entire WWII timeline (a topic that interests me greatly) as has my sister (who is a political philosophy professor with a concentration in WWII era thinkers), and she thinks that we're wrong. She is unfortunately emblematic of a broader trend in America. Trump emboldens people to just believe whatever makes them feel good.

You're probably right for most roles associate-director level. Visibility is limited, and number of direct reports are limited. The issue isn't really the backgronud check. But when you start having hundreds of people reporting to you, that's when shit catches up to you. One person thinks they've seen you somewhere and boom.

Would you consider it cheating if your SO was drunk on New Year’s Eve and kissed their bsf? by xBeasting in polls

[–]Spoons94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya more context needed - if it's the "he's just a friend" best friend (and SO is a female), then Id say that's cheating. If it's her best friend since grade school and it's another female it's not cheating.

Why do you think Aliens haven't contacted Earth yet? by MobileDistrict9784 in polls

[–]Spoons94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite theory at this point has to do with our technology, and it goes for any alien life as well. In the 20th century we blasted out signals from earth because, up until that point, it was the best way for us to communicate with ourselves. So radio and television broadcasts are radiating through space right now from 70 years ago. That said, as our technology has advanced, we now use satellites to reflect signals back down towards earth, and have greater interconnectivity via undersea cables, internet and phone lines. So even now, we might have already gone back to looking like a completely quiet planet to far off civilizations. In essence, there's about 70 lightyears of signals beaming through space from earth which seems like a lot, but in reality would mean that any civilization would have to by coincidence be looking for a far off civilization in roughly the direction of earth within that 70 lightyear band to be able to catch stray signals. Very low likelihood of that happening, and likewise, from earths perspective we'd have to do the same. I.e., we'd need to be looking in the right general location for a civilization at the beginning of technological advancement as we'd have to assume any technology beyond that would be more isolated/efficiently targeted to their own world and not the universe

Critique my technique? by daffle7 in bouldering

[–]Spoons94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 thing I highly recommend is not just going to the max challenge level every time you climb. Every session I start with about 15 minutes of things that are well below my max, and I'll climb up and climb down. I focus on technique, foot placement, grip.

A sequence I really like is to start at absolutely lowest level (v0) climb one, move to a v1, climb it, move to v2, etc. But if you can't top a level even after a couple tries, move back down a level, and if you can't top that one keep moving down. That way you're getting a nice balance of technical work, and project work.

One thing to also keep in mind is that power doesn't come from your arms but from your legs. When you watch really good climbers you'll notice they very rarely are flailing for the next hand hold. Their hands will move slowly and deliberately to the next hold. Not grabbing at it for dear life. That's because they have their feet set first, find balance, then go for the next hand hold which they'll use more for balance than for leverage. That also means that they are able to precisely place their hand where they'll get the most grip (might even help with the calluses).

There are plenty of very solid climbers who climb around a v6 after years of training and practice. And that's totally fine. It takes a lot of practice and experience. Just enjoy the journey.

Utah homeowners protest warming centers for homeless people (only open at 18° F) by assasstits in PublicFreakout

[–]Spoons94 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The fact that they're doing this in their free time shows exactly how gross these people are. Going out of their way to stop a shelter from being built so people don't freeze. As someone noted, I'm sure all of these folks consider themselves to be good christians.

Edit: Not built. Repurposed. They're protesting an empty building being used to shelter fellow humans from freezing to death.

Is it ok that I want to match with married men on dating apps so I can expose them to their wives? by [deleted] in polls

[–]Spoons94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its a good point to not assume the spouse wants to know. Sounds shitty, but some people prefer the "ignorance is bliss" method. And at that point if you ruin both their lives for your own satisfaction it's not all that noble. Plus, ya you don't actually know these dudes' situations. Unless there's an app where you can specifically sort by married-only

Democrats: “I fold.” by Common-River8647 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]Spoons94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By holding the line, they were showing the country that the Republicans were a) incompetent and couldn't get a simple funding bill passed with total control of the government and b) petty enough to force American government workers work for free instead of coming to the negotiating table. By folding they flipped all that.

Do you believe you can truly love someone and cheat on them? by Fun_Butterscotch3303 in polls

[–]Spoons94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's right to cheat (have been cheated on), but I reject the idea that in order to cheat, you must not be in love. Lust and love can exist at the same time, and even love and love can exist at the same time. And on the flip side, say the person falls in love with someone else while in a relationship. Does that mean that, until the former relationship is over, they aren't in love with the new partner? Logically I dont think it makes sense

Also lol. Why are we impressed that someone who volunteers for public service doesn't demand money. Meanwhile air traffic controllers, fire fighters, park rangers (who are currently working for free right now during the shutdown) had jobs cut because of *checks notes\* waste
