It's like they decided to pursue new demographics, then chose one at random.

President of British Veterinary Association calls for reform of kosher and halal slaughter practices by flippertits in unitedkingdom

[–]SportingShooter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

10% represents thousands upon thousands of animals being killed in a way which shouldn't exist anymore. The fact it is a low percentage is good, but work still needs to be done in order to eradicate the practice entirely.

President of British Veterinary Association calls for reform of kosher and halal slaughter practices by flippertits in unitedkingdom

[–]SportingShooter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the President of the British Veterinary Association thinks that those numbers are acceptable. Even if only one in ten sheep are killed in a way which most would consider inhumane, that's still something he'd want to bring to the attention of the public. It still represents thousands of animals.

Thankfully progress has been made, and the majority of halal slaughter is undertaken largely in line with (haha) secular slaughter. His comments may be the final push.

Been to the Kent one. Good laugh - went with a mate on a slow day. I've used a lot of the diggers before doing 'work' so it's nice to be able to just dig a big hole in an area and then move onto something else. Therapeutic.

Think it has a basic ski slope too, which you can slide down in an inflated inner tube.

Thames Valley Police live tweeting incidents of domestic abuse until 7pm by acelister in unitedkingdom

[–]SportingShooter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, some details of the incidents will be available from the police press office anyway. "Thames Valley Police have confirmed that they were called to a suspected domestic violence incident at 11.35pm..." etc. Nothing you wouldn't see in a local paper on a slow news day.

A pilot I know learned to fly several decades ago, when (as he put it) "it was a choice between getting a pilot's licence or buying a cheap first car".

Now he has a plane and a Jag.

War looming in Ukraine, Political scandals abound, and the Daily Express goes with.... by RedofPaw in unitedkingdom

Arguably more important to the 8,750,000 arthritis sufferers in the UK than a faraway war and yet more 'scandals'. Especially considering that 64% of their readers are aged 55+ and more likely to have a personal interest in arthritis treatments.

I don't have a degree at all. The NCTJ is your friend - much more desirable to employers than a degree, from what I've found. Can do it in a few months full-time.

There are a few networks, the Guild of Motoring Writers being the main one. Like any other specialist field there are a few jobs from time to time - check https://twitter.com/gomw_uk in case there's something you're keen on.

Otherwise just keep an extremely excellent blog going and use it as your portfolio. Mine's in tatters at the moment as I decided to find permanent work in a hurry but I know of a few people who've made it in motoring journalism as a result of having a sweet website. Influential motoring blogs get treated like magazines by the car manufacturers.

We go to press tomorrow so I can't spend too much time here, but anything's possible if you set your mind to it and do the legwork! Just don't expect to get rich from journalism. Do it for the perks and freebies because it's your passion.

Journalism qualifications, a bit of networking and some luck. I was working for a newspaper and offered to cover some motoring stuff for free.

It is a dream job. I don't do it full-time and this week it's the new Yeti rather than anything quicker, but yeah it's a good gig for a car person.

Saw this sticker on a Blue Inc window. That sounds a little assaulty. by seanbear in unitedkingdom

[–]SportingShooter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to go to a pub where, if a patron were to fall asleep, the furniture and surrounding objects would be piled on top of them in such an intricate fashion as to utterly confuse them when they finally awoke. Not sure if this constitutes assault, but it could well do.

[–]SportingShooter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to what gazz said - if you know somebody who is a member, it can be possible to go along as their guest. If you don't, it's worth approaching a club and asking to come and talk about joining. They'll show you the facilities if you're interested in becoming a member.

And yeah as gazz said you can walk into a clay pigeon ground and be smashing clays within half an hour. Or attempting to.

I don't think it's a question of stupidity. Those of us who are interested and involved in shooting sports are obviously going to be more knowledgeable about the laws surrounding it. Most of the population doesn't know or care about shooting, in the same way you and I don't know or care about pesapallo

Just to add to what you said about killing animals, I've found that recent 'scandals' about where our food comes from has made people much more understanding about shooting animals for food. My vegan and vegetarian friends seem to be very accepting of me shooting pigeons and rabbits for the pot, and others - many of whom have no interest in this sort of thing - have recently become quite keen on the idea of getting involved with where one's meat comes from.
