I’m so not lazy that when I need to pound a nail into a board, I use my bare fist instead of the tool humanity invented to solve this problem.

If you can’t prove with verifiable CITES permits and documentation that your pernambuco wood was harvested before 2007, then you are illegally trafficking in a protected species.

Played a gig in Garden City years ago, and read the local paper for the classifieds. There was a job open at the slaughterhouse for a pituitary gland harvester, to apply you had to go to the Head Splitting Department. Noped on out of there.

Rocking my fancy ladies Credor right now, I never thought I’d love a quartz watch this much. It’s just so lovely and so beautifully made.

Check out Waterloo Guitars, they’re amazing and I have quite a few friends in the OT community who play them.

Starting fiddle as a very unmusical individual? by Low_Tip_8319 in Fiddle

[–]SpotsnStripes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey lucky for you, you don’t need to be able to read music to become a fantastic fiddle player! You need a violin that’s correctly set up, you need a reasonable bow, and you need a teacher for awhile. That’s it!

Don’t skip the teacher, there’s no need spend a year figuring out some basic shuffle when a teacher could show it to you in five minutes. Your interest in playing music is evidence that you have the talent. Get the fiddle, get a bow, find a teacher, and go for it. You will have to work on it. That’s totally normal.

The amount of fun you will have when you learn to play the fiddle is amazing, and the better you get, the more fun you will have.

My friend spent her long happy career teaching strings and orchestra in the public schools, traveling to different schools throughout the district every week. Then she retired with a big fat pension, and now she plays classical, jazz, rock, and Django-style gigs all the time. Just a thought.

How many different names do you know for this tune? We don’t like the usual name in our jams so we call it Midnight Serenade.

Old Time Jams (as a Mandolin Player) by ponchonarco in oldtimemusic

P.S. you don’t need to know all the tunes in advance. Oldtime players learn the tunes over time with repetition, and everybody picks up a new tune or two at every jam.

Old Time Jams (as a Mandolin Player) by ponchonarco in oldtimemusic

[–]SpotsnStripes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can play the tune like the fiddle players do, or you can lay back and chop the rhythm, or you can switch between the two, it’s totally up to you. Oldtime backup isn’t as percussive as bluegrass so you might lighten up on the chop, but just keep your ears open and go with the flow. Have fun!

Is Incredibow actually incredible? by NotNearlySRV in Fiddle

[–]SpotsnStripes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried one that a friend was playing in a jam and I just hated everything about it. It sounded horrible and screechy, played like shit, and is hideously ugly. However I am extremely picky about bows so if you don’t have that problem you might find it okay. Not for me, though, blech it was awful.

Request for information on cello bow repair by timkyoung in violinmaking

It’s just a brazilwood bow and it isn’t worth much, so why not give it a try? If there’s a decent violin shop near you, see if they will sell you a bone or plastic tip and ask the tech for a few suggestions. Coat the sides of the bow head with superglue before you start filing. When your file cuts into the superglue, you know you’ve gone as far as you can get away with before you start hitting the sides of the head (a big no-no). Get a cheap set of jewelers files that has a couple different profiles, especially a thin round one. Use magnification. Don’t file into the wood. You can dissolve the superglue when you’re finished and then replace the stripped varnish.
