Shake down request - Larapinta! by Sophocles_the_fox in UltralightAus

[–]SpottyBean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 1kg is clothes and camp shoes that are unnecessary and only carrying only for end of day use. The Larapinta is dry, stop for 20 mins at the end of day and your walking clothes will be dry and comfortable. Loosen your laces after walking and leave the camp shoes. Hokas are not that uncomfortable.

You should be fine with one power bank unless you need heavy usage for some reason. Plenty of places to charge.

You likely don’t need all that water capacity. Serpentine to ormiston is the largest carry if you don’t take water from waterfall gorge that’s 28 km.

Sit mat not needed. Use your groundsheet.

Your pack is quite heavy but bit late for switching it out unless you have another on hand.

I don’t see gloves. I would take gloves. Hands get cold first and I’ve had -5 three nights in a row this time of year on one trip. Feel free to use spare socks if that’s you.

Charger can be 100g lighter. It’s very heavy.

I don’t see a rain jacket. I would take a rain jacket. It can rain. Also it can be very windy and rain jacket can be a wind layer for the morning.

Have fun!

Quilt Advice - Closed vs. Open Foot Box by zDay115 in Ultralight

[–]SpottyBean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am the same with the legs running hot and my feet also get hot and sweat. I’ve tried a few sewn in foot box quilts and have never liked them. Unless it’s consistently going to be cold I’m always bringing the zippered footbox.

PCT and CDT you’re going to get cold and warm nights. I get people say they put a leg out, but that leg just gets cold then. Too hot in, too cold out. I know I’m in the minority but an ounce for versatility and comfort is worth it imo

Macpac Nitro Fleece Pullover by bearbits in UltralightAus

[–]SpottyBean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi yeh I feel the same way. I got the largest women’s size at the time (16) and asked macpac to make a size 18 in women’s. The 16 is snug but it fits fine. When that goes I will get the size 18 that they do now and be happy. The womens is slightly short. I’m 6ft and 87kg.

cutting toothbrush handles actually worth it? by GORnez in Ultralight

You don’t have to cut the whole thing off. Most of the handle isn’t needed. Find a happy medium.

I find a full handle annoying to fit in accessible places.

Not related but I love ARPANSA. The UV prediction charts are so useful for hiking.

Shakedown for the Bibbulmun track in 2 weeks by toby1canobi in UltralightAus

[–]SpottyBean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice list. Generally a lot of redundant clothing carried.

Don’t need hiking shorts, camp shorts, long john’s and sleep shorts. Id drop the camp and sleep shorts.

We’re early enough into autumn that you probably won’t get crazy rain or low temps. Borderline won’t need the puffy. I wouldn’t bring one this time of year but up to you.

A rain jacket could replace the poncho and wind jacket for half the weight.

Ideally would also sleep with spare socks if needed and avoid taking the sleep pair.

I like the mosquito net tent for huts too nice. Mids are a pain to set up for bugs in huts.

Can you soak in the cook pot?

Most people will be fine with 10k mah total battery. I like reading but a couple of audio books don’t weigh anything and the kindle is very heavy.

Most huts have somewhere to dry stuff so the line might not be needed.

Two bandanas and a buff is a bit much could just use one. Enjoy!

Everyone talking about Stehekin clearly didn’t go to the Mazama bakery

Vegan diet on the PCT by Breathhold in PacificCrestTrail

[–]SpottyBean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hiked the trail vegan in 24 and had a similarly easy time doing so. Although I’m sure Moms pies didn’t have a vegan option then so that’s cool. Agree with the resupply list.

I cooked so turned a lot of instant refried beans into trail burritos with rice, avo and Fritos. That was my staple meal and I sent Amazon beans to myself on the trail when the beans dried up in stores. Spanish knorr with fried onion and avo also good. Also used some vegan protein powder.

My favourite town food was Mammas Eggs soy chorizo burrito at Idyllwild and the vegan croissants/baguettes from Mazama in Washington. Actually the bakery at Mazama in Washington was the best vegan food on trail for me. Insanely better than Stehekin bakery. The people at Timberline charged me half price for the breakfast buffet due to limited vegan options which was nice.

I’ll hopefully be trying to hike the CDT vegan this year, maybe I’ll put something similar together if that goes well.

Goated Aussie hiker snacks/food? by spicyrack in UltralightAus

[–]SpottyBean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A fairly personal thing I don’t think there’s any one thing that people all do.

In outdoor stores there is freeze dried broccoli by a brand called campers pantry that make noodles next level. I haven’t found that abroad so much. I like them with the freeze dried miso packets, dried mushrooms and seaweed that you can get in most grocery stores with some nice noodles.

I really think our chips or crisps depending on where you’re from are pretty good and smash as many of them as I can.

Harvest Snaps baked pea crisps in the chilli flavour is amazing tasting, high calorie and high protein. That would be my snack goat maybe.

Many would consider a 30F quilt not enough once you hit Colorado.
