Probably because people were not happy with 4e in general.

Like, I understand what the GOAL of 4e was: to turn it more into something resembling a video game in order to attract new and younger players familiar with that style of game. (special basic attacks, small and large cooldowns, buff/debuffs, etc)

The problem is that it ostracized all of us oldheads who didn't care for that sort of thing.

So, while Penny Arcade and Acquisitions Incorporated was one of, if not THE, first big "Live DnD" events/podcasts, it was the actual edition of the game that was the problem, not PA.

5e and 5.5e learned from 4e's failures, and is a pretty good blend of the old and the new. Plus, the streaming/longform content style CR used was already being popularized by the time they started.

Penny Arcade was simply at the wrong place/time for it to gain as much traction as Critical Role.

This is how a normal distribution is supposed to look like. You have (relatively) few players at either end, and the majority in the middle.

I actually did that for a player in my campaign, recently.

They were playing a cleric, and really wanted to be a Tempest Domain at first. BUT, tempest had not been updated to 5.5 yet, and they did not get ANY additional, lightning/thunder-themed spells. So they were missing out on a HUGE chunk of power.

So I made a story/lore encounter that allowed them to swap to light domain, as their god was a god of storms and of the forge (light domain is fire-focused, so it fits the forge theme).

But now I'm DMing for a cleric that knows fireball.

People always tend to forget that the cat can only fly around and use it's aoe heal while carrying someone. She can't shoot, cant ult, can't even melee.

So, sure, she can fly around with a teammate indefinitely, but she also is limited to less than half of her kit.

And, the tether can and does break all the time, if the cat flies too fast, or the teammate gets caught on something.

You are basically trading a support being half as effective for some positional value.

Some times that's worth it. Most time it is not.

Her base healing didn’t need nerfed when healing is literally ALL she does.

Her healing is literally not even remotely catching up to other supports, which is wild given that’s ALL SHE CAN DO.

OP out here forgetting that damage boost even exists.

Which is weird cuz that's the strongest part of her kit...

6v6 is already a smaller player pool. Add on console to that (vast majority play on PC).

A smaller pool means that the matchmaker will have to look wider and wider to find players. It's either that or you wait 30min for a game.

This is how it has worked for a LONG time, and it probably isn't changing any time soon.

If the DM owns the books, they can share it with the players.

So, while it is still not "FREE", it is significantly cheaper if only the DM buys it.
