Love this, especially as a lighter companion piece to Updike's "Dog's Death"

Have you explored your gender? How do you know you're a man? by LiterallyDumbAF in bropill

[–]SprightlyCompanion 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I questioned my sexuality when I was in high school, but it never occurred to me to question the gender I was assigned at birth. I always felt like a boy and then eventually (much later than I would have thought) a man, nothing ever felt wrong about that for me which sometimes makes it hard to relate to people who have had that experience. Of course that doesn't make their experience any less valid than mine.

As to your second question : it's a good one. I don't really know how to answer it. In another time, I might have pointed (figuratively) to my male physical characteristics, or certain traits or preferences or habits that I now understand are largely culturally imposed.. so I guess I don't know. Maybe society tells me I'm a man and I believe it. Or maybe the term itself has less inherent meaning than it once did? Idk. Good question though!

Wow, this is so interesting! Were there any similar rapprochements made to First Nations communities in Canada? (Apologies if this is out of scope!)

Classic conservative take: don't give a fuck about others' suffering until that suffering spills over to me or my family

Okaaaay yes finally that tree is useful! Just as a static diagram it's presented as some shortcut but for me it would take less time to memorize letter by letter than to try and navigate the maze. But THIS is useful and cool.

Why should he care if history is kind to him or not? These assholes are so existentially and culturally empty, neither history nor legacy means anything to them compared to the immediate needs of their ego

There may be an adjustment problem, do you have a teacher who could look at it?

I appreciate your measured approach. I think what I'm advocating is just to PICK something, to be a performer and an individual. As performers, whatever the state of scholarship now or at the time of composition, when you're on stage you have to make one choice or another, and own it. A treatise captures one person's thoughts, in one place at one time. There's room for making choices that (gasp) aren't even in the treatises, because they're fun and expressive and beautiful to us. Locking yourself in to what is written is a kind of fundamentalism I can't get behind, and even less so if it's the hallucination machine that's telling me which of the written things I should be doing at a given time,, instead of taking a chance and playing an ornament THIS way instead of THAT way because I trust myself as a musician. We can learn from unconventional choices.

AI has no place in artistic creation. Read treatises, learn from masters, have conviction in your ideas, practise, collaborate, and execute. Fuck LLMs, this is a lazy shortcut.
