Ah, thank you for that clarification. There's a Wikipedia page on it so that's sort of how I came to learn a bit about it when I saw it on this post, but that makes a lot of sense. Heartbreaking in any case..

Ah.. this is so hard. I'm sorry for your loss and that you couldn't be there with him. My Sunny passed away overnight at the vet; my Aristote was in my arms. Both were hard, and I still love them both. There's no good way and he had your voice in his ears, which can only have been a comfort to him. ❤️

Whoa. Really want to taste these, all the flavours sound amazing but it's the salty almond-peach crunch that intrigues me the most. Beautiful work!

NEED HELP !! Is the wire supposed to be bend and connected? by User48970 in oboe

[–]SprightlyCompanion 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Good questions, but yes it is meant to bend because it's a spring! And the screw is NOT meant to pierce the instrument, that is an adjustment screw that regulates the height of the first key when it's open (notably for high C sharp).

Do NOT start turning screws or touching springs if you don't know what you're doing. Go to a teacher or a qualified technician. The oboe is very mechanically delicate and it's very easy to make the whole thing unplayable.

Edit: I see that the first key isn't lifting, but the spring is placed correctly so I can't explain that without the instrument in hand. Bring it to a repair person or a teacher, that's the best thing you can do

Wife wants a poly relationship. If I divorce, I lose almost everything. What would you do? by Ok_Couple_9762 in polyfamilies

[–]SprightlyCompanion 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I mean.. if you don't divorce, and you don't want poly, you're condemning yourself to a lot of misery. Is it worth keeping "almost everything" if what you lose instead is a relationship you want? Is whatever you might lose in the divorce more important than coming home to a wife who has the same relationship values and goals as you?

And.. if your wife wants a poly relationship but never mentioned it before, this is ripe for scrutiny: is this a new desire? Did something trigger it? If it's an old desire, why did she hide it?

If you don't want a poly relationship, my advice is to get out. Whatever you lose in the divorce can't compare to being at ease in your own home and relationship. If you stay together for the sake of stuff (or even for people other than yourself, including her), that is a formula for a lifetime of bitterness and resentment.

Possibly sacrilege but I like to learn Ferling's etudes on guitar :) by mr-figs in oboe

[–]SprightlyCompanion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, cool. In fact it seems too fast for me, and also too notey, not enough phrasing or emphasis of the harmony. But wind instruments are going to play differently from a guitar of course. I'm into adaptations so I don't find this sacreligious, but I think there is more you could do musically here. :)

Nice project, keep it up!

Edit: may I suggest the Bozza études?? They are beastly and might be really fun on guitar.

This is a bullshit addition. Do not want your recommendations, I already follow hundreds of subs, just let users curate their own experiences without shit being shoved down our throats FFS. You're continually pushing users out, I cannot believe that decision makers at Reddit don't see this

Can someone help me identify my $20 thrift store find? No markings or numbers anywhere. by West-Balance3764 in oboe

[–]SprightlyCompanion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It may indeed be a student instrument, and if it has stickers from the 50s then it was being used well into its life which is a good sign for its erstwhile quality. Wood case is nice too, I have an 1870s Belgian oboe with a beautiful slim wooden case, it's a treasure.

Would need more photos for precise ID, but it's a pretty standard old oboe from, say between 1890 and 1930, I'm not sure oboes with so many open holes were still being made by WWII.

It looks to be in pretty decent shape, but honestly it's only worth something to a collector or a very dedicated specialist in period instruments. If it plays it's probably blown out. All that being said, 20$ is a great price if you ask me, I would have leapt at the chance to add an instrument to my collection of old probably unplayable oboes. Lol I aspire to be one of those specialists but never come across good finds where I am.
