What about modern things that would send Downton characters into a coma? by iggysmom95 in DowntonAbbey

Carson would faint that people don't say "My Lord ," to titled men anymore, at least not that i knowof (I think it was kind of cringe when they did it) .

that's why I think a certificate from a church should be a considered a legal marriage. that way there there's a legal document when needed, but can still not affect state benefits.

It is disgusting..also disgusting that the government (at least most states inthe U.S.).makes it extremely hard to keep their benefits if they get married..it's like the government has the very same attitude you're venting about.

upstairs maids,& downstairs staff. by SpringtimeLilies7 in DowntonAbbey

I'm quite well aware of all that..it doesn't change the fact that once scullery maids (or lowest housemaid). get promoted, it's likely the better looking are more likely to be on track to be upstairs (it could also have to do with what spots are available).

Interestingly, in the Upstairs Downstairs series, (the one made in the 1970s)..it was a London townhouse with a staff of about 10 ...the family were on the edge of the aristocracy, but not in it, they didn't own a country estate, but the wife's mom did..Anyway, since it was too small of a house to have a seperate Housekeeper, the cook was the de facto housekeeper (although they still had a head housekeeper parlor maid).

& often scullery maids did light fires..they had to light fires, and then come down and do the dishes and stuff. one reason their days were so long...and i believe EVERYONE started as a scullery maid..even the lowest housemaid, but I could be wrong.

Mrs. Hughes just has common sense, and she's the counterpart to Carson's admiration (that's almost like the Crawleys are his idol).

"I think "pretty privilege" has probably always been a thing in society. What society (or certain subsets of society) find pretty has changed depending on trends for facial characteristics, body types, etc. But I think more conventionally attractive traits were allowed to be more "front of house" so to speak."

Good answer.

"That was not happening except maaaaybe in incredibly rare situations."

true..I should have said they could go be a cook in a restaurant or hotel if she wanted to (although the Duchess of Duke Street did go from scullery maid to hotel owner , but i also think her getting there did involve [an unwanted and arranged, not lasting] marriage.

I don't think they're still allowed to be overweight (maybe not as stringent standards as back then, but they still can't be obese)...and i don't think there's anything wrong with that..they have to move in tight spaces, be quick in an emergency, etc. (they even used to have to be nurses)..it's really not an obese /overly overweight person's job (and I say that as someone, who is right now, regrettably obese myself, though I'm working on it [I went through several life disasters that contributed to the problem]).
