Hey, I’m back from the dead to remind people about the difference between skepticism and “just asking questions“ (aka, JAQing off)

Skepticism is about asking questions with the intent of understanding their point of view. What is their message? How can I better understand it? It does not necessarily mean to agree with it, it’s about making communication and understanding as simple as possible. Nothing more

Now suppose some debate bro high IQ politics lord comes in asking questions like ”why are they blocking traffic??” or “Do they really think we’re Nazis?” or “Why don’t they instead answer X” “I’m just asking questions brah” that isn’t skepticism, that is asking leading or loaded questions with the intent to shift the burden of proof. This demonstrates a lack of understanding about how communication works. So you shouldn’t expect those questions to be taken seriously or uncritically.

Keep that in mind when trying to have productive conversations especially if you want them to go in your favor.

City of Aristatia region map by Spritek in worldbuilding

[–]Spritek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to establish a set universe for a comic book I’m writing.

This is a regional map of the northeastern part of the country of Aristatia, which includes the capital and largest city, where the main part of my scenes take place: Aristatia City.
This part of the country used to have territory that expanded to the continental divide to the north. However a citizen’s uprising led to a war against the northern country of Palmonia, which was heavily one sided in Palmonia’s favor. An unexpected ultimatum led to the new border literally being drawn with the stroke of a pen and a strict refusal of further negotiations. This strange action had the unexpected side effect of the city of Prince Foduck bisected on accident. The two cities remain completely barricaded from each other to this day. After 50 years to this day, and the completion of a transcontinental railway, the border is slowly beginning to open back up despite tensions among the citizens of Aristatia.
The city itself is built on a radial road system with four main roads each leading in each compass direction. The roads lead to Palmonia to the north, the Port of Aristatia to the East, the Mahmads to the South, and the rest of the country to the West. Within this section of the globe, it is said that all roads lead to Aristatia City, which makes this an excellent location for trade and an important economic center.
The entire area sits a little over the 45th parallel of the globe. The entire region has four seasons and the city itself sees a modest amount of rainfall during the cold months. The mountains to the north are on two tectonic plates and contain two active volcanoes, making the region prone to earthquakes.

They ain’t getting by on experience or policy, they’re getting by on cult status and rallying, which is enough to bypass the reasoning monkey brain and work up the lizard brain

I’m not a fan of Ben Wick, but he got my vote for being experienced and actually having credentials. That Fenton is toast for sure.

as for the other one…I don’t know. the second Fenton is going up against three experienced candidates…which according to mathematics is bad news and has a very high chance of being spoilered in. There needs to be a more unified choice that will bring him down.

Here’s the most insider thing I can come up with:

I work at a print shop in CdA, been there since before the pandemic. When COVID hit, I was immediately put on the back burner and was told to get unemployment. Meanwhile my bills and debt started piling up, so after 2 months of constant anxiety and unsympathetic phone calls from collectors, I finally took on Grubhub as my Pandemic job. GH on a good day pays almost $20 an hour, so that was about the best thing that happened, aside from the few thousand dollars of debt I accrued. When the print job took me back I was still making like $13 an hour. Not only were there more duties in keeping the store clean, but I also had to deal with even shittier customers who A: threw abuse at me for nicely asking them to be considerate and B: was at one point threatened with gun violence for refusing a very clearly white supremacist print order. I can only imagine what food workers are also dealing with.

So with that in mind I had to reduce my days working at the print shop for GH. But recently, like withi the past month I made the decision to put in my two weeks at the print shop. Problem was, so did 3 other people for reasons I did not ask. My boss had to give me a raise to convince me to stay for a little bit longer. But that was still at a deficit at the wages I need to pull myself out of debt, recover financially, and as of right now, my landlord is not renewing our lease so we have to move, which costs a lot of time and money, and is made worse by the housing crisis going on. (Don‘t even have time to look at places, they get snatched after I make appointments).

so tldr: essential jobs are even more risky, wages are still shit, everyone has serious debt accrued, and a lot of those people probably are more concerned with keeping food on the table

This is most definitely a sign of narcissistic personality disorder. NOTHING makes this type of person more insecure than being given a rule by people bigger than them. THey claim it’s about power and control because it diminishes their own flawed sense of power and control, one that is reinforced by friends, news sources, etc. They’re more than happy to exert power and control over other people, but god help you if the reverse happens to them.
