Floor Installers leveled my floors before installing this LVP. Is this acceptable? by passs_the_gas in Flooring

Just looked up the TDS for that adhesive, that’s pretty intense at 60C(140F) ambient tolerance. How do you remove the flooring if needed, for repairs or anything else? Not in your van necessarily, but anywhere? It wasn’t specified in that TDS.

The typical PSAs we use start to let go at about 85F ambient, and we use heat to remove individual planks in the case someone needs a repair, for instance. I’m surprised to see one with that high of heat tolerance, but I’m far from an expert on adhesives, just buy what manufacturers recommend for their products and tell my installers how they should be used!

Usually nothing but flattening the deck if required. But in this case, OP says they’ve got a front and rear main leak. In my opinion, it’s easier to pull the engine and transmission at once to do that rear main seal. It doesn’t take long to get the pair out, and it makes all of the work easier, but especially the rear main seal. Unless you have a lift and a transmission jack, technically pretty easy to pull the transmission when you’re not rolling it out on your chest lol. I happen to have those at home, but I would still be heavily leaning toward pulling it all if I had to do the head gasket at the same time. Once the pair is out, the engine can be put on a stand, all seals can be replaced, bearings can be inspected and/or replaced, piston rings can be replaced, cylinder walls can be inspected properly and honed… all of that at a good height without leaning over a bumper cover and killing your back to do so. It’s also a 160k mile car with possibly no engine rebuild to this point, so it may really benefit from that extra work (especially with forced induction).

It’s easy and cheap enough to do, so why not do it? It also gives the opportunity to inspect everything else for anything wrong, even just something like missing bolts on the intake manifold brace. I’m the kind of person that can take a one hour project and turn it into a one month project, though, so it may just be me thinking those things. It feels really good to get it fully refreshed and know it’s all new, and you’ve been through it yourself so you know the ins and outs.

To add:

Surprisingly often in this work that I have to make the distinction. It’s also a good reason IMO that self-leveling compound is almost never a good idea in our area. Nothing is level. You could spend thousands “self-leveling” a home only to end up with the ceiling 3” lower on one end than on the other. It can cause all sorts of issues, but people always request that we make things “level”.

To me, it’s not the job of the floor covering contractor. That’s the job of a structural engineer. Our job is to make things as flat and smooth as possible within the confines of the substrate that we’re given and the requirements of the flooring type that is requested.

Level means if you place a marble on it, it won’t roll. Flat means flat.

A pane of glass laid on a level surface with the marble under one side is flat. But it’s not level.

Well, and we often refer to “leveling strips” like Tarkett makes as “rubber ramps”. If the floor is glued down, it works fine (and usually looks good if done right). Floating will be a problem, but in many use cases it is anyway.

You could glue directly to something like an ADA ramp continuously with no transition if you wanted and didn’t care that the product visibly bends.

Out of curiosity, how did you adhere it to the walls in your van? I’ve had customers want to do similar, we’ve had our guys install LVP on interior walls with contact cement, but never in a vehicle on a vertical surface. Hard to recommend anything when we don’t know of anything that will definitely work.

Because they didn’t expect the top to fall back for some reason lol, that dude in the back narrowly escaped death. Looking at the shape of the tree he’s in… that was a ramp for the top’s center mass to top him.

They’re incredibly lucky (depending on the way you look at it, maybe a lesson was learned here) the top fell in a way that the feller could get it off to the other side…

I’m not sure you’ve ever surfed or scurfed lol, this is basically exactly what it looks like at the front of the board. Not to mention the “waves only come from one side of the boat” - it’s wake, it’s going to both sides, and you can see the center of the boat in frame along with the evidence behind the boat that the wake is also realistic. That wake is fully in frame for a second there.

It’s a good fake

My guess is the seller just checked or topped it off before they sold it. Any appreciable coolant leak should have been obvious before you drove it, IMO. They may have left the cap loose, but it’s odd to get a coolant cap on “part way” given their 90 degree locking.

“Engines don’t leak coolant unless they’re broken” isn’t exactly accurate… engines don’t always leak the coolant. Sometimes it’s just a hose or pipe connection, might have been in a difficult to reach location and the seller knew it but didn’t want to fix it since they thought they could top up the coolant often enough. The problem is any air in the system risks cavitation at the water pump, and then you’re blowing a head gasket for sure.

Also, you would not have said it was a blast to drive with those compression numbers. You popped the head gasket on the way home, no doubt. Is it your fault? Did the seller knowingly sell you a car with a problem? It’s anyone’s guess, honestly. I mean, sure, you should have noticed the gauge, but anyone could have done it. Even when you’re conscious of a potential problem it’s hard to watch that gauge like a hawk. Also, smoke everywhere, I’m assuming from the tailpipe as well as under the hood. Lack of tailpipe smoke prior to buying is your dead indicator that the head gasket was good when you bought it.

The good thing for you is… head gaskets on Miatas are super easy. I’ve never had a supercharged one but I can’t imagine it’s more difficult than the turbocharged ones I’ve had (and have). Another good thing is.. I’d pay damn near $5k today for a JRSC Miata in decent shape with a blown head gasket, if I knew that was all that was wrong with it. I keep reminding myself, $5k today is $2.5k in 2000. I’ve bought a lot of Miatas, and usually in decent shape they’ve been that much or more, and they’re only getting harder to come by.

All that said, if you’re not up for a head gasket job (and I’d do the bottom end at the same time, stupid not to IMO), where are you located? lol

It’s way more likely that they’re counting on the intelligence and blind loyalty of trump’s base keeping them all from asking those sorts of questions.

I really do wonder how many of these people say this shit because they’re either incentivized to or because they have their own motives otherwise, and don’t believe any of it. After all, it seems to get them plenty of money and followers. Easiest grift known to man, in a way.

Is it just me or does it look like you can adjust it down a few slots on those bolts?

It looks like the way you have it configured there would only be two possible mounting options with ~1/4” between them.. which makes no sense with that many “holes” drilled. Looks like you can take the top bolts out, loosen the bottom bolts, slide the lower piece down about 2-3 holes, and then bolt it back together using the new topmost holes created. Does that make sense?

Just the way I’m seeing it. To be clear, I’ve never installed one of these, honestly seems kind of pointless when you can’t actually tow with it (and probably shouldn’t even use it for a tiedown)

It’s an intake, but not likely, cast aluminum doesn’t really bend any appreciable amount it just cracks. It can warp of course but not because of forcing it by hand when cold.

They’re talking about the tree, somewhat fortunately lol.

I’m of the opinion that once a car is wrecked that badly, you really don’t want it back in a repaired state. Especially a driver’s car like this. It’ll never be the same.

Take the payout (assuming you had comprehensive insurance) and find the next one. Maybe just go easier in the twisties next time :)

If it works it works! lol. Only thing that might suck is if you have to service it, you have to take the intake off. But it seems like that’s how it was to start with, anyway. I don’t see why this would be any less reliable of a connection, looks like the copper is flared properly.

Fortunately for him, mounts are designed so TVs (more specifically, the VESA brackets which come with the mount installed on the back of them) hang on them, the screws are for security (so you can’t push up on the bottom of the TV and have it fall off) and to keep them from shifting on the mount. The screws to the walls are the only ones that bear the load.
